This should be an interesting contrast and break alongside AOT. I watched this episode last night with lower expectations but have to say I was surprised. Excited to see where it goes. Edit: I'm also watching it in subs so I get to see these episodes in dub as well which is cool.

agoodwintv

I spilled orange juice on myself and now it is immortalized in video forever.

Anonymous

Noto hit at the right time🤌🏼 You’re gonna enjoy this series bro

Anonymous

noooo plss in sub!!! i cant stand the dub pir favorr

Aidan Pullen

Wow! I actually didn't expect this to win! I didn't vote for it but I'm not mad, it's a fun show. I hope you enjoy it! There's some fun characters in here, I think you'll have a good time with it. Time to surpass your limits and go beyond. PLUS ULTRA!!!

agoodwintv

Yeah I enjoyed this episode. It's surprisingly funny - some very subtle jokes. Lots of potential

Andres Lozano

Love the dub as well!!

NitrousOxide19

as much as i love the gore and darkness of shows, this show is definitely my fave of the new wave of anime. i can’t wait to watch your reaction!

agoodwintv

I gotta go with the dub this time, my apologies! It seems that there are about equal if not more people who like (or at least are ok with) the dub, and it makes my life A LOT harder to do subtitles. Having 2 subbed shows running at the same time would be tough

Vali

I wasn’t sure how excited I would be for this reaction, but seeing the email alert that this was posted made me just about jump out of my seat. Can’t wait to watch these reactions, it’s a fun show.

Anonymous

“A Goodwin TV” Analytics Reactor. Quirk:????

Stephen

so stoked for this journey! you're points about society going backwards won't be lost with the show

Nathan

Holy shit let's GOOOO even though I didn't vote for this...I mean it's a great show...but frankly after seeing Avatar and FMA you've basically already seen the best animation has to offer, before accounting for personal taste...so you can only go downhill from here...but let's gooo yay....

Derrick C. Shields

Thank goodness with the dub. I'm usually a "I can take either sub/dub" kind of guy; but I prefer dubs, especially when they're as good as this.

Aura Y

This will definitely be one of the more light-hearted, but still a fun ride. I can't wait for the economics of hero society to be explored in future videos!

Fabiola Macias

Oh my gosh yay!!!!! How exciting!! MHA is definitely a more fun, quirky kind of anime, but has lots of hype and sweet moments

Valeri

MHA is a great show to balance out the heaviness of AOT. It's one I always come back to as I just love the world and most of the characters. Super excited to see the reactions! :)

Anonymous

This show will elicit as much thoughtful analysis as a Michael Bay Transformer movie.

malikparah

FMA:B may be over but the spirit of Alex Louis Armstrong lives on since he has the same VA as All Might

Anonymous

Kinda what I'm thinking too. It's not a bad anime just not very thought provoking.

agoodwintv

I see respectable muscles are just part of his talent, not a character feature

BotheredAsh

Fun fact, the creator is a big Star wars fan so you'll see a lot of Star wars references, hence Tatooin Station.

Ramon Cintron

I wasnt expecting this... Not my favorite show but I'm looking forward to see your take on it.

Jupiterninja

I just keep thinking of DBZ abridged Goku: "I wish I was All Might!" Gohan: "I wish my dad was All Might!"

cade-carter

You have an eye for picking out detail so dont let the more "basic" parts of the show fool you there is real depth in the story. youve already called out several things that the show touches on

Anonymous

Not thrilled tbh. My Hero is a good anime but definitely overhyped and not really a discussion or thought provoking anime. Guessing it got so many votes because the newest season is airing. Also much of the fanbase is toxic so there's probably going to be spoilers throughout comments section...wish you'd gone with something like Death Note or Steins; Gate. But I realize they're a little older so there was no way they were gonna win the poll...

Nick

Honestly as someone who was originally against MHA, after watching this I think he'll probably have plenty to say even if it is lighthearted fun. A story doesn't need to be as deep as FMA for someone to pull value from it and talk about it. If you limit what you watch and discuss off of that alone, you're missing out. I could literally talk about the kid's show Chowder for hours, and that is not by any means a deep show. Except for the bank teller episode.

Anonymous

Something about this opening always struck me as nostalgic even when I heard it for the very first time.

Kollie123

Hmmm well this will be an interesting watch, thought you might avoid more long running shonen, but I do think this show has enough depth to be a good read. You’ve already started noticing/commenting on some societal stuff just off the first episode lol

Suki

Quirk: Fruit Communication

Ramon Cintron

I wouldnt trust allmight either... Then againi dont trust anyone who smiles that forced

Warmlights

Great commentary on this first episode. You caught a lot of things that the show will touch on later on that I only noticed on this rewatch with you. Excited to see your reactions to the next episode! Thanks!

Aidan Pullen

I don't think that hero work is the main focus of the society in general, it's just a big industry. Even in this first episode, you see the vast majority of people just doing normal things, leading what are probably unremarkable lives, and are happy with it. There are people just going to work and living. It just so happens that there are criminals who misuse their powers to do wrong, and so there's gotta be people to stand up to it. It's just another component of the justice system to worry about. Not everyone wants to be involved with that. I'm sure there are people out there who just want to spend their time doing a trade, or teaching, or working at a bank. Sure, society is more complicated and unpredictable now, but it's just extra variables you gotta account for.

Jake White

Yeah this isn’t necessarily a series that you should be applying to the real world or scaling it similarly to how you have for FMAB and AOT lol. It’s more of a fun comic book universe with focus on enjoyable characters and steadily paced development over time.

Carlos Salazar

Little bit sad because of the dubs, yet I definitely understand your reasons and I'm all in. This is so different and reading the "not a thought provoking show" comments I kinda agree but still voted for it because this same reason, I'm really curious about your take on it. AOT really got into your head, huh?

DrowsyCody

“I hope this will be lighthearted” aw shit here we go again

Anonymous

Yo honestly, I know Alex's talents and strengths. But hearing him laugh is great too. I'd love to have a watch through of DBZ Abridged

Emma Root

I didn't know I needed your commentary about the economy in my hero academia in my life until now haha

Anonymous

My favorite aspect about this show is that society at large is treated like a character in the story. one that reacts and grows as events unfold.

Feral Riot

Omg yes finally !! This show is def light-hearted but still has an interesting plot about how the hero society works, I cant wait to watch these reactions !

Jake White

Also, just to clarify, the world is 80% people with quirks and 20% people without. Not just 80% heros or even heros+villains combined. Even accounting for all heros and villains combined, there’s still a massive portion of the ‘quirk possessing’ population that live simple, everyday, ordinary lives like Deku’s mom.

Jay Crigler

Yea I knew when I voted for this you would pick up on the subtle underlying story don't get me wrong it is a light hearted anime but the themes you've already picked up on our relevant

agoodwintv

That's true, it seems like there are just people who are dedicated to it full time, like any industry. It almost feels like celebrity, except with powers.

Anonymous

I remember liking the dub, but Katsuki's voice sounds so weird to me this time around.

daniel kurtz

MHA is a slow burn, but the season finales have huge payoff and character growth is done well as not to feel shoehorned

Brimmy

Letting u know right now (u'll find out soon enough) the MHA fandom is FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR more toxic than the AOT fandom is i should know i was heavily obsessed with MHA in 2018, binged the manga and all Edit: also also also Bakugo/Katsuki/Kacchan(Kaachan??) whatever u end up remembering him as HE GETS BETTER it just takes a bit o.o so he's a dick now but wayyyyyyyyyyyyy less of a dick later (the fandom is split some think he's gotten character development and others think he's just abusive so i don't know just giving my two cents that he gets better) and like someone else said MHA is a slow burn, it'll take a bit for it to really grab u by the ass and fling u into space also seems the audio for the episodes are a little low since this is Dubbed maybe turn up the vol a little bit cuz when i do that u are \v e r y\ loud o.o

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Many of your predictions about Deku, All Might and Bakugou and the hero society were spot on xD it’s not a very Deep Show, but it’s fun and it does have some philosophical or deeper stuff it throws at you

Nick Deano

WHHOOOA MY Hero? awesome! i havent watched any of it so it'll all be new to me too, like dragon prince was

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

I also love how you recognized the band porno graffiti, but it doesn’t seem like you realized our lord and savior, Christopher Sabat (the voice of Alex Louis Armstrong himself) as All Might!

JDalsing

Eww... I can't believe so many MHA fans actually follow Alex. He's actually smart D; #DekuFails Always #SideCharactersertsAreBetter

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

Also please don’t let the comments ruin the show for you. I got really into it and it turned out to be a lot of fun. Looking back on it it certainly isn’t as good as say fmab or something, but it’s fun and quirky (pardon the pun) and it definitely deserves some attention. People just shit on it a lot cause it’s very mainstream popular, which means most people seem to hate it on principle, just cause it’s not what they like in a Show.

JDalsing

Fortunately Alex will sympathize with the week hero... but he's still week 4 series in... I hate him, more than any hero. give me bakugo, or shotaro. he will always be weak

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

My last comment I swear: maybe it’s even good that people are talking mha down so much, in that case you can be pleasantly surprised when the show exceeds your expectations

JDalsing

Deku Sucks, both as a hero and a villain. he sucks...

Andres Lozano

You are factually blind to his development from a crybaby. After S2 that gets toned down but he will always be a very sincere guy

JDalsing

@andres Lozano let’s talk in our dm’s

SirLagginton

Will you be watching the whole series in dub? Just wondering as I know there's a lot of scenes in season 4 which in sub are just *Chef kiss*

jdthebud

I noticed the volume issue too, thanks for pointing it out, I thought it was just me.

Vali

Great commentary on the show right from the start lol fascinated by your ability to pin certain things down already, also the economy theory is my favorite lmfao irl this would surely be unsustainable

Rudy Strother

Love this show. It takes its time but it definitely touches on some pretty interesting themes and questions.

Nathan Jarrett

I'm gonna sit this one out there's nothing special about mha and the series ruined what could have been an interesting concept by giving Deku a quirk. The series would have been more interesting if Deku remained quirkless and proved himself a hero without powers. Instead we get the most basic shounen imaginable

Albert Rhodes

You know, even though I made a comment against it, I ended up voting for MHA when you posted it was down to 5 shows. I figured the levity is probably a good contrast to AoT, and it seems you feel the same. There are definitely some interesting ideas in this one, but it really kind of takes a bit to get going. I like your concern over the economy. Not really a spoiler, but there's a throwaway line at some point about how, if it weren't for quirks, humanity would have likely achieved interstellar travel by the point in history the show takes place in. So yes, certainly not a good recipe for a prosperous world, though it would be entertaining.

Andres Lozano

Nah that is you just being annoyed at him not being a Batman. He wouldn’t be able to get as high as he wanted without a quirk even a simple mid quirk. The villains can be quite brutal in this series, how is he supposed to handle the serious villains? Even Gentle would make quick work of just a great athlete with gadgets. Lots of heroes and villains have gadgets/highly technical outfits in this series.

Shark-ira

Yay, mha time!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts about my favorite characters. I think it'll be a fun experience overall.

Anonymous

I know dubbed is easy but I wish you’d watch subbed! The emotion and translation is so much better! So excited your watching this show though! It’s nothing like FMA or AOT but it’s amazing in its own right!

Chill Potato

the titan interrupting traffic in the first scene is actually Mikasa. You can tell from the hair. spoiler btw.

Sklargen

FINALLY SOMETHING I CAN WATCH OF YOURS AGAIN! haha i always keep the patreon on but the stuff you have been watching I plan to watch but haven't gotten to it yet. I really enjoy this show and I can't wait to see your thoughts on a few things in the future episodes!

Will Watches

I think a lot of people saying the show isn’t thought provoking enough aren’t giving the show enough credit, the show explores some really cool concepts and consequences of the hero world. SOS bros have hour long discussion vids for some of these episode

daniel kurtz

Wouldn't call it lighthearted fun lol Definitely has some levity and arcs with lower stakes, but when shit goes down, people can get hurt and people can die

minimonie__

first watch here! even though some said that it's not that deep etc I still think it's an enjoyable one and there's nothing wrong with that :D

enes y

Will most likely sit this one out too. Its super generic and most it‘s characters are super dull and basically your cliché 08/15 shounen mc‘s with some side chicks aka comic relief chars.

Anonymous

“I hope there are quirks that give people the power of insurance.” That’s it, forget super speed. This is my new dream super power

I was worried that this show would be too light and fun for you to really sink your teeth into, but you made a good point that it's a perfect counterpart to AoT. I'm sold!

mr_wordcraft

AOT has Alex so cynical that he's here questioning All Might's intentions. xD MHA is a good contrast to AOT, Deku is such a nice, hardworking kid filled with hope that he can't help but be inspiring, I also love how him and Eren share the same unyielding drive to achieve their goals. Hope you love this series as much as I do, I feel it refreshes my perspective whenever I start to look at the world in too-gray-a-light.

Anonymous

Just because a part of the fandom is toxic, doesn’t mean that everyone who watches it is stupid. Stop thinking you are above others, just because of their preferences

Rachel Keys

This definitely delves into the grey areas with heros. It'll take a hot minute but it starts off very shounen. Clear good guys and clear bad guys but then starts introducing those grey areas of what is right, what is wrong, and what makes a hero. There will be plenty for you to think about in this anime trust me. I'm a manga reader personally but now you've given me incentive to watch the animation so much apreesh lol <3

Juan

to be honest, i could never get into this anime and hunter x hunter (which according to the poll will be next), where the power of friendship, believing in yourself, or simply being the main protagonist gets you through impossible situations or tasks (most shounen). Especially after watching FMAB, Avatar, and AoT where there's so much depth to the storytelling, character and worldbuilding. i do however really enjoy your commentary, so i'll keep my mind open to liking this. fingers crossed!

Ian

Mha is a going to bring about some good discussion I feel. It really does get into the weeds of what is a hero and heroism. But of course it’s a really fun action show that allows for the fun side of heroism to be enjoyable to. I think it’s gonna surprise you a bit and I hope you enjoy.

Mahni Alizadeh

Hunter x Hunter has absolutely nothing to do with the power of friendship and believing in yourself are you sure you actually watched it....? Agree about My Hero though. But give HxH another chance it's wayyyy deeper than that bro

War2244

My Hero does have a lot of that but I'd say HxH doesn't have much of that "Power of Friendship" stuff. HxH starts off kinda like a basic shounen but as arcs develop more Gon because more and more interesting. He doesn't win just because he is the protagonist and any sort of ass pull will come with consequences.

War2244

I don't like the dub so I won't be watching these but I hope you enjoy it! My Hero was one of my favorite shounen for a few years. Jujutsu Kaisens taken that spot atm but My Hero is still up there.

Juan

yeah i watched till the arc where they reached the top of some battle tower. and learned to control their chi or whatever. or maybe it was right after they became hunters. i can't recall everything it was so long ago. sure i'll give you that. i can't recall a "friendship" or "believing" scenario. in this case, the "simply being the main protagonist" thing applies. It just always bothered me how gon was so overpowered for being a little boy who grew up in a small village. and being able to master the "chi" so quickly (among other things) just because he's the main character so therefore he should be exceptional. if it was only innate instincts that he excelled in, and he gradually became stronger that'd be different it's different with killua, from what i recall he was born into a family of powerful assassins. so him being overpowered makes total sense to me. but absolutely i'll give it another chance when goodwin starts reacting. he may give some input that changes my perspective.

Derrick C. Shields

The idea that FMAB isn't about "the power of friendship" considering what Ed does in the penultimate episode, or that Aang doesn't solve some problems by just being the Avatar and getting out of near-death/capture situations makes me think you just don't like how those same tropes are applied in different scenarios. It sucks if you thought HxH wasn't doing everything it could to not baby any of its protags, or if you thought it was slacking on world building. It didn't become a classic due to the MC winning every fight and pulling out impossible wins from his ass every time. You should really give it another go, if you ask me. MHA on that other hand, I kind of agree? I've always heard MHA sold as "a bunch of shounen cliches done really, REALLY well" and I pretty much agree with that take. The only difference is I like it; don't have much to say beyond that. But I can see how that might get tired eventually (and where I am in the manga it actually kind of has for me SHH don't tell anyone).

Juan

you're right. i think all anime has those cliche moments at some point. but fmab and avatar rarely had them and they had so much more depth to offer in prior episodes that i could overlook those moments. I totally relate. i'm guilty of sticking around with trope-heavy anime like fairy tail and dragon ball. but i do also consider those to be mindless fun that i watched since my early anime days. it's just hard for me to get into another one after experiencing better stories out there. yes i'll definitely be following goodwins reactions to hxh.

Ramon Cintron

Yea almost no one gets developed in this show so i stopped reading the manga when I realized we basically have a sea of faces with no personality

Xylen

I'm guilty of being one of the ones saying it's not very thought provoking, but honestly you're right. I love the show, but I suppose I'd forgotten about some of the details throughout. Looking forward to this.

meg

I wish I could get into this show everyone hypes it up so much but I couldn't get past season one because of how much they sexualize the girls in this show, especially underage ones that are supposed to be high schoolers. It just made me beyond uncomfortable but it was fun other than that I guess :/

Noah Hoorn

All the negative people in here are pretty obviously wrong IMO. This is a great show with a lot of deep topics and themes while also being one of the most emotional shows I've ever seen. ATLA is my favorite show of all time and MHA is top 5 for sure. Also I am completely caught up with the show and manga and trust it is really good. Lots of great action, comedy, and character development. ATLA is amazing but it had some minor flaws early on, please give it a chance people <3

Noah Hoorn

Literally has won so many awards and is killing it right now. Is it a bit normy? Yes. Is it more light hearted than AoT? Yes obviously, almost every show in existence is more light hearted than AoT lol. It's really funny throughout and gets deeper as you go. It's strongest trait is how emotional it gets at times, can really tug at you and is generally uplifting. Alex can't just watch AoT type shows all day he's going to end up depressed as hell lol.

TheTrashBandit

So pumped to watch you react to this series! Glad you chose dub too - I like both sub and dub but it's easier to watch reactions to the dub in my opinion.

Th'owl

Very much anticipating this one :) I'm actually stoked you're doing this considering how it actually helped me make a turn in my life.

Anna Lena Ciplajevs

I love this show but to be fair yeah, I hate that part of the show. And Mineta, goddamn. So much.

enes y

I would sincerely say that FMAB is more friendship driven than HxH by a lot. In HxH the MC‘s are insanely talented which helps them clear up the earlier stages of the show, but once the general tone of the show switches to a darker one you will quickly see that Gon & Killua are often even liabilities and/ or not strong/ stable enough (since both of them are still kids)... you should definitely watch more episodes before judging a series lol.
