Just to offer a counter argument, Rayla didn't actually say I love you. It may be that in that moment as Callum was possibly dying, she realized her feelings were more complicated than she knew and she was trying to express that in the moment. After this realization, she consciously started behaving differently towards him. I don't know if that works for you but it does for me.

Ryan

Quite a few fans noted that the vibes between Callum and Rayla increased tremendously this season, and it's typically put down to the crew having no idea if this was it for the show, so they wanted to put in as many of their ideas as they could.

Álex Martínez

The intro of this episode does start off the same as at the start of season 1: Aaravos voiced both, and Sol Regem is there too

Tangerra

That was how I saw it, from the writers standpoint. But I also realize that as an autistic ace, I don’t quite understand how folks do that kinda thing in real life so I guess it seems more plausible to me.

Bug Catcher Jacky

I think a reason why Ezran got back faster is because they had to take less detours. I mean when they went to Xadia, they had Rayla with them so they couldn't just easily march through every town forcing them to make detours. Plus all those extra things like Zym's egg dying, having to hatch him, getting up the mountain, meeting Claudia, etc etc was not needed for Ezran either. He could just go straight back without any detours or stops. Add in the fact Banthers are probably really fast and it makes somewhat sense.

David Johnson

Like most wars, there are assholes on both sides...and Sol Regem is especially asshole'y. Honestly, I think Amaya saved Janai because letting her die just wouldn't be honorable...and besides, she knew she was trapped with the rest of the Sunfire Elves, can't hurt to build up *some* good will...

Bernhard

Yeah, almost letting a realization slip is something very different from confessing your love. That being said, romance and its development never makes sense, less so in media where it’s subject to plot demands and production requirements.

Phoenix Mackenzie

Yeah, she didn't realise that she cared so much about him until she thought she could lose him, once she realised her feelings her behaviour changed to reflect that

Melanie Meadows

Romance has always been the worst part of these creator’s projects. The weird pacing and awkward writing for it was the same in ATLA and Korra. I kind of wish they’d just stop trying but I guess romance is just too big of a plot point to leave out entirely. Maybe one day they’ll figure it out lol

Serinthia Kelberry

Well I mean, regarding Amaya...weirder things have happened...who knows what the future holds for her...

David Johnson

And of course, it's just how it's shown with that cut from one to the other that says these two events - escaping Sol Regem and arriving back at the castle - take place at the exact same time. There could be several days between the two.

Suplee215

I thibk rayla didn't realize she had feelings for him til she said it out loud. I don't think it's full love yet but people often say that word not knowing what it means yet fully but it the only one they got.

Tangerra

It may just be how they interpret these things. I can tell you from my own experience that from an outsider perspective, a lot of what people (especially in the age range depicted) do to get into these kinds of relationships does actually kind of look like this. Because I know that I lack the understanding of whatever nuance goes into these things for some people, I understand that it’s not likely this is how it actually happens and so I tend to leave that kinda stuff out of my writing, but it does make me wonder if it’s how they actually see this stuff or just that it’s a limitation of their storytelling ability.

Liam Gradwell

Just seeing Elijah having a full on gay panic whenever Amaya appears and having her constantly compare her to Mosco is what I look forward to in these reactions! 😆🌈🎉

Kyasemi

Fun fact: Aaravos also did the intro in season 1 ep1. You just know how his voice sounds, so you recognize him.

Dafydd Mac an Leigh

Hmm...the (probable) big bad of a story narrating the opening of the first episode...where have we seen that before? ;-)

Kyasemi

It might just because I've shipped them even before episode 4 of s2, but for me it was actually a pretty nice gradual transition in their relationship as of right now.

[*Two buff ladies fight*] Elijah & all of us sapphics on the planet: "I ship it!"

So regarding Rayla's feelings, that might actually be a consequence of plans changing mid-production. It's been stated by the crew that they actually had no plans for anything romantic between Rayla and Callum initially and then after seeing the fandom talk surrounding them, they changed course about midway through writing Book 2 to include it. So the whole "I lo..." thing in Book 2's finale was probably their way of setting it in stone for the audience that she has feelings and that it could happen. But that moment does admittedly feel rushed where it was placed and I say that as someone who loves Rayllum. I like to think that she was just overwhelmed at the time with both her growing feelings and him almost dying and as such, almost said something out of emotion without meaning it. It's definitely not full-on love yet but she was stressed and it was probably the first word that came to mind. Thankfully, I personally think they're handled amazingly from here on out.

Connor Grynol

I don’t think Amaya is that cynical. She probably has not considered the idea of building goodwill. The breach has been closed. Katolis is safe from the sun fire elves. She doesn’t have a reason to fight them anymore.

Connor Grynol

Truly one of the biggest problems with creating a series that spans multiple seasons for a company that can be extremely fickle with subsequent seasons is that you can’t plan ahead as much as you’d like to. I won’t say it’s the only problem. I do think the writers aren’t the best at romance. I think my favourite romances are in Frieren. I can’t put it into words but the romances in that feels so natural. But I digress.

Joey Quixote

"Ohh! Does she end up on the other side and then she's like a *hostage* or somethin'?! Bitch!" "Just take her. Take her as your hostage. It's fine. I'm sure she'll... love it." Amaya saving the sun fire elf fully shows her personality and her appoarch to life and war. Yes she's a soldier and take life in battle. But only when needed. Both her and the elf are fighting for causes they believe in and for their people. If Amaya lets her die then Amaya is still a prisoner as there is no way for her to not get caught. And regardless of what they do Amaya still achieved her objective. It also seems like the 2 has mutual respect on the battlefield but that is reading into things. Ultimately Amaya will not kill without reason and there was no reason to kill her. Which contrasts well with Viren who would totally do so just because of a possible risk in the future

Gabi Rajic

The confusion at the beginning of the reaction was everything, as was the simping over Amaya and shipping her with the sun fire elf 😂

Dark Siri

Well, yes. Two seasons walking/flying/sailing equals one episode on banther back. So, banthers run at the speed of plot. Very useful skill in story like this. If Ezran had stayed with the rest of the group, the story could be wrapped up well within season three. But what would be fun in that? Best to keep Exran with his banther mount back home on his throne, I think. More fun all round!

Ryan Porter

50,000k slow burn, enemies to lovers, ten chapters before they even say hello (because of the language barrier...), fluff, angst, wait, do they even *have* coffee shops in Xadia!?

Ryan Porter

What was it that someone once said? "You'll find many of the truths you cling to depend greatly on your point of view..." "Is it weird that I ship her with Amaya?" Yes, yes it is. They have tried to kill each other *multiple times*. Rayla does seem to fall fast for Callum, but keep in mind the amount of trauma bonding they've done over the past two (weeks) seasons. If they were sapphics they would already have adopted a Banther cub and hitched up the Mule Haul after the first traumatic event.

Andy

So excited for season 3! Also, I'm pretty sure I've seen this "In the Hands of the Sunfire Elves" game Amaya just isekai'd into in the dating sim section on Steam

Iron117Prime

Archdragons are the larger ones like Sol Regem and Thunder (Zym's dad that you saw back in Season 2) and are the rarest form of dragons, widely considered the strongest beings in the world and are usually the ones that speak. But I am VERY excited to see you react to the rest of this season. It's gonna be wild.

Lei feetenby

To your point about how Ezran managed to get back so quickly. Remember that majority of Season 1 and 2 was them spending a large amount of time on side quests. (The whole saving the egg from dying, exploring the snow mountain. Relaxing with the Illusion Mage, and even Callum being sick). If you actually cut out all of their side quest shenanigans, it'd probably take a day or two to get back home.

Another thought, I personally think Amaya saved the elf at the end because Amaya is very much depicted as an honorable warrior and she sees the Elf as a worthy opponent from their previous meeting. Usually in fiction, such a warrior would prefer to see their opponent killed or otherwise defeated in single combat by their own hand as opposed to having them die a lesser death like being blown off a cliff. Or, maybe it's just a crush. Beats me...

SauceyRed

Yippee I'm finally back in the Patreon! My sub ran out a couple weeks ago and I was broke after getting myself a laptop, but I'm back!! And I have one episode of RWBY, Vox, AND Dragon Prince to watch!

SauceyRed

I love romance and I've personally really enjoyed TDP's. I don't really have any complaints.

LikeCat

Also, also just a heads-up, as you can see Aaravos is a how to prease it, an unrealiable narrator. And that saying it lightly.

LikeCat

Two more episodes until THAT part. I can already imagine at least ten or so different ways Elijah will/would react to it. The wait is killing me.

Daniel Drew

It was my birthday when this was posted ^__^ I was happy to see the video drop that day even if I couldn't watch it till now.

LikeCat

I think she will flip and break her chair either way.

Olivia

As you will see the pacing with Rayla and Callum is slightly fast, and I believe that’s because at this point Netflix had not green lit all 7 seasons. Meaning the creators had to wrap up characters storylines (while still keeping something’s open). I highly recommend reading the comic through the moon before starting season 4, since there will be a time jump between the 2 arcs

xattygt

Season 3 is the best season so far imo

Edox

In the original script. They weren't planning on rayllum. It was someone looking at how the scenes were doing closely and realizing the potential. I shipped them since episode season 1 episode 4.
