These opening episodes got a lot of undeserved hatred at the time for not matching up to the personalities people had created for the girls in their heads after the almost dialogue-less trailers, especially Ruby not being a stoic badass all the time. Luckily, the show's own quality didn't take long to do away with that line of criticism.

Weiss Schnee is German for "White Snow". Most of the characters are allusions to other fantasy characters. Glynda Goodwich being Glynda the Good Witch and Ruby Rose being Little Red Riding Hood are the obvious ones. Yang, Blake and Weiss are 17 while Ruby is 15.

YESSS FINALLY!! These starting episodes are just to get a feel for all the characters and then we start kicking off into the lore and fun stuff! Also to answer your question; Yes, Glynda IS a reference to Glenda from Wizard of Oz, and Ozpin is a reference to Oz himself! Every character has a fairytale reference so look out for those!

te names are actualy colors ruby is a shade of red , weiss is german for white , blake is a modern spelling of blaac the old english word for black and yang means sunlight or light in chinese

Ruby is 15, while all the other students at Beacon are 17. And yes the Glynda Goodwitch thing is on purpose. All the characters are allusions to fairytales, myths, legendary figures. The Wizard of Oz is one of the MAIN allusions; plays a big role.

To answer your question about eye colors: colors in general are pretty important to RWBY! And yes, these characters take inspiration from Fairytales, mythology, and other classic pop culture; Glynda Goodwitch and Professor Ozpin are included in a Wizard of Oz allusion, Ruby is Little Red Riding Hood, Weiss Schnee is Snow White, Blake is Beauty and the Beast, and Yang is Goldilocks as well as being involved in another Fairytale allusion but I won’t spoil which one. I’m glad you’re already into it, it has a pretty rough start but gets exponentially better so the fact that you’re already enjoying it is promising! Im very excited to see your reaction to the show’s progression.

With every character in the show, they have allusions in design/concept etc to certain things with the characters kind of grouped up. Team RWBY have connections to fairy tale characters for example. So Glynda, Ozpin and others linked to them do have allusions to the wizard of Oz. There is also a set of guidelines put in place by Monty called the Color Naming Rule that defines how a character is named and was created as a guide for naming fan made characters. Those guidelines are that all RWBY character names must either: 1) Be a color 2) Sound like a color 3) Mean a color 4) Makes people think of a color

Yeah, the chapters in Vol. 1 are quite short. All of Volume 1 is less than 2 hours, so practically a movie. Watching multiple episodes at a time is best for this volume. They really don't ever get up to normal TV episode length with a few exceptions.

It’s funny that you said you’re not totally sure what’s going on yet bc there’s actually a lot of little things you picked up on that I didn’t realize were foreshadowing until rewatching the entire series though obviously I won’t say what for spoiler reasons. Like a lot of others have said Weiss Blake and Yang are all 17 turning 18 and Ruby is 15. Beacon Academy is like their world

I’m glad you’re reacting to multiple episodes since they’re so short. I remember also feeling a bit lost when watching these early ones. Because they couldn’t afford to animate long episodes, you don’t get a lot of world building except for some terse exposition. It doesn’t hurt the show too much though in my opinion, you just have to go with it and trust that everything will get clearer later on. It’s gonna be a fun ride!

Fun that u caught that glynda is based on the good witch from Oz. Almost every character is bass on some fairy tale or mythological character. Ruby is little red riding hood, weiss is snow white( her name weiss schnee translates to white snow) Blake is Belle from beau and the beast and yang is goldilocks

"I wanna know that [Ruby and Yang's] family history." might be my favorite line of this video. Fun facts: If you look up the full name of the Wizard of Oz, the initials are OZPINHEAD and here we have Ozpin, the Headmaster. The map of the world in the first minutes of the show came from a napkin intentionally stained with ketchup and crumpled up - yes, really - there's a picture of it on the RWBY wiki but there are also tons of spoilers there. Also someone probably mentioned this in the previous video, but Weiss is the German word for white and her last name, Schnee, is snow.

Beacon puts teams in the same room together so since it was there first night and no teams were assigned no rooms were assigned either the next couple episodes emerald Forrest and players and pieces are the peak of this season and your right you are left in the dark as to the over arching story and will be until the season 3 finale but they will slowly and subtly clue you in as you go

It's fun to go back and see how the characters, their relationships and the world around them has changed over the volumes. At this point they're only just starting to take the first new steps on their journeys as individuals, teams and friends. Weiss doesn't exactly make the best first impression in volume 1, but I've really come to love her.

The opening narration is by Jen Taylor, who is best known for voicing the AI "Cortana" in the Halo video game series. According to the creators, Taylor came into the recording booth and nailed that whole monologue in ONE TAKE, so they had to keep giving her fake notes and other things to try just to use up the rest of the time she'd been hired for.

Commenters, I'm confused - we're here giving Elijah some monetary support but some of us are writing comments that would take away Elijah's chance to learn character info or story info that the show is intentionally still building up to share itself at the end of this volume or even in upcoming volumes. I don't understand why people do this. Maybe Elijah has mods or something who read these comments instead, but idk since I'm new to the Patreon.

As you may have caught on with Glinda Goodwitch’s name she is based of the good witch of the north. As you watch the series you’ll realize that almost all the characters are based off of fairy tail characters. For example Weiss Schneider translate to White Snow in English. So I’ll let you put that together haha Loving your reaction and looking forward to forward to seeing you watch the series

Quick tip for Elijah! For the next couple episodes, I recommend watching them together up to Episode 8! It totals to about 37 minutes and when put together it feels much better than watching them separately!

Hi Elijah! Amazing to see you get super exited and interested in the world, BUT please don't skip the Intro/Opening. Other then being brilliant earworms, they are great at forshadowing future things without spiiling them (in later Volumes especially), minus Volume 6's, I still don't know why they put some things in it. So please watch the openings. Besides it is super fun to speculate about what each shot in an opening alludes to.
