Hey everyone! So this just happened. Apple is doing what they do best, so starting November if you wanna join someone’s Patreon through the iOS app, it’s going to charge you more for simply having an iOS system… thanks Apple.

Just figured I give you guys the heads up so you don’t join through the app if you’re ever interested. (In mine or any other creator’s Patreon) You’ll save money if you join through the website.

MRRSDS51015

It's a good thing I have Samsung phone

Sonicblue21

So, don’t join a Patreon creator’s membership via IOS app. Never did, never will.

Jesse Miller

Android here. Yikes. Thanks for the information!

The Akimbo Knight

To be fair I only use the iOS app for notifications and the website for videos. Watching vids on the iOS app is beyond tedious

I signed on via desktop, but the heads up is appreciated. Glad you’re looking out for your fans here, regardless of whether or not I personally would have needed to hear about it.

The enshittification of the internet continues...

Vince

WOW I fucking hate apple and being chained to an iphone so fucking much I wish my toddler brain would let me switch 😤 thank you so much for the heads up

Cam

So the options they give you are: “1. We take more money from your Patrons. 2. We take money from you.” Thanks Apple

Brookie XD

Do you know if this will effect any current memberships that were originally joined through the IOS months ago?

Robbie Thornton

Really appreciate the heads up Elijah. It really is disappointing that Apple are doing this.

Maggie Ray

Okay thanks for letting us know.

Phineas5381

I never downloaded the app. Glad to see that I never will. Thanks for the heads up. You’re awesome 👍🏻

Terrell

Never been happier to be an android user right now

Company bastards

That and apparently from November onwards, Patreon memberships people join will be charged on the date you joined each patreon instead of on the first of the month.

SauceyRed

That’s only if a creator switches over to that subscription model, if they don’t, subscriptions for that creator will just be unavailable in the app.

SauceyRed

It’s not a new thing, all apps with in-app purchases must use Apple’s system with the 30% cut (unless they have some kind of deal with Apple). Honestly don’t know how Patreon hasn’t had to comply with it until now unless they had a deal.

SauceyRed

I find the video experience the same between browser and app, but the website is more of a hassle to use for me.

Joshua Gwinnell

Okay no! this is getting ridiculous now 🤦🏻‍♂️

David Bodor

As if people needed more reasons not to use Apple products.

Animegirl

So glad I use Android phones. I was actually thinking of switching, but this just made my mind up for me.

SauceyRed

Out of curiosity, why did you consider switching? I rarely see someone actively consider switching to iOS. Also, it's always been a requirement for apps that accept any in-app purchases to use Apple's system with the 30% cut, so I'm honestly not sure how Patreon has avoided it until now, unless they had some sort of deal with Apple or just somehow flew under the radar. Always pay through an app/platform's own service.

Animegirl

Back b4 my iPod broke, I was told for $30 you could get unlimited iTunes music. Which seemed like a deal, but then I discovered Spotify was better.

Yet another reason I avoid Apple tech like the plague.

demonic-myst

All this is a reaction to the eu forcing apple to alow exsternal stores apples reaction t the law was just add exstra charges ro all third partys to anoy the eu technicaly following their law

demonic-myst

Funny enough this is a reaction to the eu trying step in and control apple this is apart apples change that technicaly makes them in line with eu law while fucking everyone over in process

David Bodor

EU laws are actually pro-customer, Apple hates everything pro-customer.
