Hey everyone,

Unfortunately November turned out to be a real disaster. 

1) I caught Covid... again... which knocked me out for over a week.

2) My cat Shadow suddenly lost a dramatic amount of weight over a three week period, and we found out he had terminal cancer. He was only 13, and a much beloved part of the family. 

3) My youngest son is in hospital with a serious eye infection. Thank goodness the IV antibiotics are making a big difference, so he should be back home again by the end of the week.

As you can imagine, writing in all this chaos has proven problematic. I've nearly completed Chapter 158 bar the final combat scene, so I'll publish that here and add the final part as soon as I've finished. 

Anyway, apologies for not being able to churn out multiple chapters as I was hoping for. Hopefully you will still enjoy chapter 158.

No, I had a negative attitude a year ago when he started this bullshit. Now my attitude is so sour I really could care less about the story, because I'm not gonna read a story piecemeal over another decade or two. That sounds fucking awful to me. And it's clear to me that Tefler knows he has a good scam going at this point and he will never end this story, and this his cash flow. He literally can't skip getting paid for a single month, even when he has literally no content. You think he'll end this story and his money stream? HA

At the end of last month, we were told this chapter was almost done, we’d get the rest right away. A month later, we get a partial chapter and a promise of “soon”. All of us know there isn’t a chance in Hell we see the rest of 158 before Dec 31. Tefler knows this, we know this. Chapter 159 . . . maybe a tease, maybe not, also at the very end of the year. No way 159 is finished by then, much less 160. Does ANYONE believe he’ll post a new chapter to legitimately charge for? Like others, I’ve set an end-of-year deadline, he’s not up to date, I’m gone. Great story, no way it’s worth getting jerked around.

I think all most of us wanted was a little honest communication. Since we do support him and many of us for a long time it would be nice to have some communication or do you think that's to much to ask?

I think you’re right - Tefler will never finish the story - it’s his income these days. I’m ok with that - I enjoy the story. What I don’t enjoy is paying for chapters that don’t exist. Tefler needs to switch to a monthly subscription if he can’t maintain enough content output to pay his bills. Some people will leave, some will stay but at least then people who stay know what the deal is, not being charged for phantom chapters that will do nothing but force people to quit or file complaints about charges with no content.

So, one more combat scene for 158, then it's on to 159, correct? Not going to leave 158 as is and put that fight in 159? And when you say "final combat scene," does that mean that GK forces the final confrontation ahead of the team's plans? At the rate the story has been going, if the team managed to keep to their plans to delay GK's forces as much as possible before duking it out over Kythshara, we'd be reading about GK's invasion for the next five chapters.

Sure, it’s a lot. But this is not the first or even the third time promises have been made to try and catch up and then not followed through with. I’ve been a patron for I think more than five years now. I’m not upset about it taking extra time to put out the story. Well, you can tell Tefler is suffering from burnout. That bit about whispering in Alyssa's ear words so sweet an eavesdropper would get diabetes instead of actually writing the words? The scene from Tom's trial that was truncated instead of elaborating on the cross examination? Yeah, those are evidence that Tefler is struggling. Is it conclusive evidence? Not really, but it does add to the pile. Tefler is likely past the point where he needs a break from TSM, but he can't afford it. If he were to take a month off (any less wouldn't be enough), he wouldn't be able to pay the bills. If he wrote something else instead and charged for it, the majority of the community would be up in arms over that because they're here paying for TSM, not some random piece Tefler wrote to unwind.

I'd be fine with a new piece, he can take a break and come back to TSM when he's ready. I think he enjoys the story as much as we do so I don't think he'll abandon it, but sometimes a break is needed. Catch up on TSM and start putting some of his other ideas to the keyboard.

Tefler should be able to afford a month with no pay. He gave up his job when patronage hit $1,500. Has been multiples of that for some time - even after Patreon commission leaves him 80%.

jdg45, you think he's still making that much after all this ruckus over him precharging? He's hidden the amount he makes per chapter, which I imagine was in response to a lot of people leaving and/or lowering their patronage levels, so we don't know how much the per chapter amount is now. Besides, that $1,500 cutoff for him leaving his job was before he had a second kid and his wife left her job. As far as I know, Patreon is the only source of income for his family. And with costs going up across the board for pretty much everyone, $1500 does not cover nearly as much now as it did several years ago. Basically, I want to believe that Tefler wouldn't be precharging like he is if he didn't have to in order to pay the bills every month.

These particular ones could certainly be called legitimate. But again, this is not the first time. It’s like someone calling out for work at the last minute because they had a flat tire. Sure it’s a legit excuse. But when they called out last week and a couple weeks before and twice last month, it’s a problem. Tefler has been on this streak since September of last year.

I had more "emotionally charged" situations in November and still made it to work all month. The level of salt in these comments clearly isnt high enough to add a modicum of shame to Tef for asking for a hamburger for the last 14 months and telling us he'll pay us on Tuesday (now over 2 tuesdays behind.) Whatever. At this point I pay my Patreon fee so I can make salty comments monthly since I'm not getting prompt chapters, polls, artwork or back and forth from the author for the last 2 years plus. Might as well get something for my money.

Jedi, I agree about the signs of burnout, but I still see 4600 patrons and ~$7500 per creation. It’s not a lot, but it’s more than most households make. In addition, there should be some book income. That being said, I remember making a comment way back when (that was heavily criticized by other patrons at the time), that he should stop posting on the free sites after chapter 100 and focus on paid content via Patreon and getting the rest of the books out to secure more income for his work. I still think that is solid advise. Even now, I think it would be a good idea to go back to his brief pattern of alternating between editing/publishing the books and putting out a new chapter. It would provide a mental break, more income, and a refresher of plots and ideas he had years ago (perhaps bringing inspiration to his current writing in the process).

Lokiz, part of the issue with no longer posting to the free sites past chapter 100 is that those sites have a policy where they will remove stories that are just teasers for paid content on Amazon or Patreon. I know of one author who had his work removed because he had more content on Patreon than he did on the free site after readers who were tired of waiting for him to post to the free site filed a complaint. He was going to post to the free sites eventually and considered what was on Patreon as WIP content. He even appealed to the free site admins, saying the stuff on Patreon was work in progress stuff, but the admins just replied back with the same reason that got his story removed: "no teasers for paid content." As for alternating between editing for the books and writing new chapters, Tefler said quite awhile ago that editing is even more time consuming for him than writing new stuff. So switching back and forth would be counter productive.

Tefler, check edits in Discord. There are a few. One I posted is chapter 158 lists the Singularity Driver barrels as 300 metres long while they are 400, and the Mech as 20 metres high while it is 30 metres high.

Enjoyed the chapter! Hoping the improvements to the wormhole generator have the unintended effect of dramatically reducing recharge time. Usually optimally built equipment works better than flawed equipment in several ways such as charging faster or being more efficient. It would be awesome if they could do more than one wormhole jump back to back before having to recharge. That would be a huge tactical advantage and and would give you more flexibility to write the story without the generator requiring ‘waiting around’ events to be written. Sorry to hear about your challenges. Thanks for getting most of a chapter out despite that. Maybe put a mask on in crowded areas… the covid virus seems to be especially attracted to you as a host.

I took that ‘final combat scene’ to mean another delaying battle as the final scene in the chapter. If you look at Tefler’s other major battle scenes they often develop towards the climax over 10 chapters. I seem to recall the groundwork for the battle of Terra (ch. 100) starting around ch 90. Enjoy the journey!

I disagree. There's a difference between burnout, and exhaustion. While I do not have a life, apparently, I also have had COVID-19 twice and have produced 4 "human parasites" (my pet name for our children). I still have not recovered my full energy level from COVID-19, one of the common symptoms of "long COVID syndrome". As to the human parasites, when those suckers, literally, are small there's a lot of illness, and time sucking even when healthy. Add a mother in law with a stroke and...exhaustion, not burnout. This was an EXCELLENT chapter, starting right away with Joh's sudden command decision. I actually enjoyed not reading what he said to Alyssa. As a diabetic, I can't have sweets, but it left room for my imagination. This chapter was NOT a rehash, and moved the main and 2 subplots forward interestingly. Burnout leaves one with no ideas. Exhaustion prevents one from executing ideas. Of course there's overlap. Addendum for those committed to the Billing Issue Tribe Wars, both Tefler apologists and Tefler detractors: an explanation is NOT an excuse. However, when genuine it is better than silence. I remain patient and tolerant to the current billing practice BUT think we ought be tolerant of dissent. Just PLEEEEEEASE don't bring moderators. Yes, excellent plot development. I thought the nausea came from microseconds of having the very large biomolecules temporarily be at 2 different places. There's some rather large molecules in the human body. Fun Fact Fan Wank time! We OFTEN see single organic molecules not only large enough to see with the naked eye, but much larger than people: plastics. In the human there are single nerve cells that go from the lower middle part of your back to your toes. Of course the single largest cell is about the size of a large SUV and roughly shaped like a pancake, but in a blue whale. The correspondent single cell in the human is about the size and shape of 2 dinner plates stacked on each other (ROUGHLY), and some women eat it raw while others soak their hair in mixtures made from them. I let you to figure out what that huge single cell is. The Mediterranean sea is currently under assault by an unicellular species easily visible by the naked eye. As to length, the giant squid nerves win (unless you count certain fungal "forests" ect, ect ect. The world is MUCH weirder than you think.

I have just been a member for a couple months and I am discontinuing my membership. I enjoy the story, but the precharging is getting out of hand. The number of excuses is unacceptable. As a business owner you have to hold yourself accountable to your deadlines. I get life gets in the way, but this seems to have become a habit rather than a one off.

Hm. Wasn't expecting the new scene. Odd that John made two new swords for Sakura, rather than anything else, like a new sword for himself, a new set of armor, or even ship components. Instead, he made swords. For Sakura. Remind me, what has John been prepping Sakura to do since the fight with Larn? That's right: kill Progenitors. Since Tefler had John make those new swords instead of anything else, that tells me that we're about to have the final showdown with GK real soon. Why else would the swords have been made now of all times? I do hope someone on the crew asks why John made those swords now instead of something else; I'm curious to see what his rationale turns out to be.

I enjoyed the part of chapter. I just think that maybe you should change to having monthly payments instead of per work as it seems like you are somewhat trying to have your cake and eat it too by making everyone pay for monthly chapters even if you didn’t produce even a full chapter. You don’t get the advantage of getting payed multiple times if you produce multiple chapters in a month but how many times do you honestly think that going to happen versus how many people are you going to anger by making them pay for chapters that don’t exist and won’t for several months?

When needing to know if a patient might be pregnant; I routinely ask if they have an internal human parasite. I like the final scenes. I hope John explores his Kyth’ powers more. It seems like special Kyth’Faren knowledge was encoded into John. Not unlike a complete set of schematics are encoded into progenitors. I’ve got to believe there is more there than just swords. Actually we already know about a few uniquely Kyth’ abilities progenitors don’t have. Dana’s control of gravity and the fundamental properties of materials, Calara’s ability to see the future. The progenitors also got schematics for weapons, devices like the wormhole generator and forge, and entire ships. I’d be surprised if the Kyth’Faren didn’t encode into John a few super advanced schematics that Xar’ never had the access to steal. I can’t imagine the Kyth’ expected their chosen one to continue using a soul forge to forge countless women’s souls into ships. The tiny white forge they are using now seems like a temporary hack. Mael’s star forge design seem like an experiment to find an alternative to a soul forge but without the benefit of Kyth’Faren wisdom John has. The Kyth’Faren must have found a way to build a forge the Kyth’Faren reborn could use and a means to give him the schematics for it. The mention of Mael’s experimental starforge and Dana’s disappointment in her new Nova Lance design suggests they will work on these two things in the near future. Perhaps Dana will invent something on her own (enhanced) intelligence. But I find it more likely that John will pump a few special Kyth’Faren schematics into Dana worthy of their last breath of vengance.

Excellent comments Az, it seems some of these are clearly not encoded in DNA but have to be reached via some connection to a distant past. Perhaps in these meditative states John makes a connection to a deep part of a Kyth' fortress wo even knowing he is there. It has been stated these fortresses are set up as progenitor traps to eventually produce someone like John. Some of this may be unkown to Xar as it may have been done as stated, in the last years before the total collapse of the Kyth'. I don't think these are direct DNA encodes, but rather some connection to the Kyth' fortresses that can only be reached in a deep meditative state. Or Mad Jonah and his small group of the last remaining original Kyth' are involved; because I want Mad Jonah back. Too many coincidences with the Tyrenium and Karron girls otherwise. However, most of this post is the ongoing attempt to "troll" you Az; in the nicest possible way.

I am re posting a previous complaint about the story that applies to the next chapters. I think if John "loads up" Calara just before the next ambush we can have some serious extension of her ability. I have mentioned before that quite some time ago, before even cpt 143, that the "load up before battle" ended with no explanation. It made no sense to me, and wound up a big problem, not to have loaded up the girls before heading into the mists. As a result, John had no direct connection to Jade and that was a mess. Remember how supercharged Dana was that she fixed the entire ship in one go? Many examples of that, but no reason given of why it stopped. Tefler ought to explain why this convention of prebattle load up ended.

Rahn’ knew about the Kyth’ citadels and knew that they were a means to kill all progenitors. But I don’t think he understood, in any way, what form the Kyth’faren vengence would take. He considered John a failure and tried to kill him. He clearly didn’t recognize what he was becoming because John’s power is base on love, not hatred. No progenitor would be able to fathom love as a source of unlimited power.

Agreed, reminds me of the first movie monsters where laughter replaced fear. That said, I still think these extra runes aren't directly encoded into John's DNA. In reality, DNA encoding is an extremely complex process of which we've barely scratched the surface. It is quite possible that the Kyth' fortresses enocded hidden messages into John, or even that the DNA would re-write itself given certain environmental factors, like love. I'm going to skip my usual rant here. Just be aware that what you're taught even in a college genetics course is extremely simplified. It is clear that neither John nor Alyssa know what they're becoming. Alyssa just thought to modify her ears using John's cum on herself and wound up changing species!

Do as you will.” In that moment for what he thought would be his last, Gal finally said goodbye to his adoptive parents whom he had so miserably failed, as he had failed everyone including himself. Hate for Xar’aziuth burning in him. “Cut your bond to all your thralls now, and promise to make no other, and you will live.” Said John, strangely fighting his own sword which seemed to twist in his titanic grip, hungry, flaring fiery destruction snarling in it and in him. Kyth’vindathys, hate going from it, not alive, not quite not alive, almost an entity; a part of John, apart from John. Twisting Eldritch runes appeared around John and seemed, seem, to be battling. Blake against John; Kismet against Choice, nature against nurture, pleasure at war with Semper Fi, a Marine in Full Metal Jacket. For a moment it seemed the galaxy held it’s breath. The past at war with the future, the Now in balance. Chpt 136: “ In the billions of years the galaxy had existed, his astronomical ascendancy was unprecedented…my true name is Kyth’vindathys. For I am the Vengeance of the Kyth’faren reborn.” It was then the battle lines were redrawn. Now either Blake or John would pick a side to lead to victory. He would either serve Kyth’vindathys, his sword, BE his sword; or his sword Kyth’vindathys would serve him, and he would remain John, just John. JohnBlake as Ashanath so accurately called him seemed to stroke his white hat with the black band and waited. A few seconds of the material world, much longer in Astral. As the spiral of the galaxy continued turning, would it return again or would something new be born, Kyth’farenathys. The Kyth’faren reborn, free of vengeance. Gal came out in his Spirit form and caressed the bond that had fed him so much pleasure and power since coming of age, for a moment lusting after the power. Spite, to drain them all rather than hand them over to this Baen’thelas perversion… and for the first time a true full Progenitor was revulsed at himself. A Progenitor saw for the first time that the enslavement went both ways. It was his undoing, his curse and he wanted an end. In a moment of fury, not at John or even Xar’aziuth but at himself; he cut the cord. Being snapped back into his body, Gal began to die from his injuries, now having only his own reserves to heal, not caring. Sakura exclaimed “John, the lines are gone! There’s nothing connecting to Gal anymore!” “Yes I can see that Sakura, but thanks for confirming it.” John’s body said as John directed it from his own astral presence. “Gal, pull out the Ninjato now. You should have just enough reserve to heal the worst of it. Then take off your armour, slowly. No sudden moves, I am everywhere now. Come, join me to defeat Xar’aziuth.” Stiffening in pain, Gal took out each ninjato out one at a time and cast it at Sakura’s feet. Then closing his eyes he healed what would have been mortal injuries. Stifling a yawn, he took off his helmet first and then began to unbuckle each section of his armour letting it drop to the floor with a clang. He slowly got up using a hand to the floor. He took off the greaves, but did not bother with the short boots. They seemed miles away and he felt certain that if he bent down to do it, he would collapse on the floor. Looking at the floor, shoulders slumped, he awaited his well-deserved death. He was sure that this Baen’thelas was just lying to him about an alliance. Just an obvious trick to shorten the fight, no matter. Death did not come, hungering he was for and end, bones weary, arrogance drowned in despondency. Sakura in psychic alacrity picked up her blades and standing behind Gal, at his throat horizontally the right death instrument; raised above the point at the joint of the neck to skull the other twin death instrument. Eyes on John, synchronized, a willing hungry tool, John’s priestess of Justice also hungry for vengeance. Sakura was not as impatient as Kyth’vindathis still twisting, furious, so hungry, in John’s grip wanting the power that was still barely John’s to control. Kyth’vindathys called out to Blake, but John had already taken the decision when Gal had chosen. Gal no longer afraid, tired, wanting as The Blade did, his end. “Now go to that comm station there. Issue a command to all your fleets, cease fire, power down all weapons and shields. Retreat half speed just inside Kirrix space. Only audio communications with my fleets to be sent or accepted. I offer them their lives as the only condition for their surrender. I know you want to die, and perhaps I will grant your wish for a psychic death; but not now. There is much you do not know.” Gal moved slowly as Sakura would permit to do John’s bidding. John followed to the side. *Alyssa, Edraele, Jade it is over for now. Cease fire on any ship that is not actively hostile. Follow them with your shields and weapons at the ready. You know the terms. A few hesitated, and were obliterated by the wary Maliri who massed their firepower on ships that seem to just hang there, but shielded. Follow me, we’re going to the Raptor and get some more girls…and Gal, you can look but you better not touch!” Incredibly to Gal, John winked at him with a smile. Confused Gal began to walk behind John, Sakura behind him, blades drawn but not so near now. For a moment Gal thought John a fool to leave his weapon so close that he would be able to grab it. He looked at the Runesword with desire…and shivered with fear as Kyth’vindathys seemed to twist and flare at John’s back hungry…for Gal’s life force. They walked in silence, John calm, Gal confused, Sakura wary and controlled. ~~~

A bit surprised we haven’t heard a word about Nathan Zelig since last saw him in an escape pod back in ch. 152. If he was rescued by Terrans a brief mention would be warranted. If one of the few likable admirals was captured and currently was aboard a thrall ship the story of Nathan’s experiences and observations seems like ‘solid gold’ subplot material (as a certain TFNN news chief might have said).

That does no explain it. Before Kyth'shara (143) it was a small number and it was going to be a short flight. Preloading would have solved many problems including the attempted takeover by Achonin. John would have already had a connection with Jade and thus she would not have shut him out. As to the Gahl ambushes, again a very small number of women: Calara #1 so her prescience would have allowed an extended assault in safety and POSSIBLY Jade as pilot. The sudden stop of pre-loading needs an explanation.

When I started working with computers and databases, I changed over to the now US standard MM/DD/YYYY. And yes I had to do a lot of YY to YYYY because of Y2K.

I liked 158 a lot. my favorite scene ends this way "The reinvigorated Fleet Admiral was too distracted to notice, but there was a faint undercurrent of sadness to Alyssa’s voice." It is excellent writing to leave WHY she is sad to the reader. Is she sad because she is culpable and in fact went against what she knew John wanted to throw a lit match at the Outer Rim powder keg? Is she sad because she knows John is an action guy and because she cannot do the Soul Forge grunt work because Athena splits her mind, he is not doing what he likes? Is she sad because she's added so many girls that she is not getting banged often enough and sex with other women is not "really" sex? Tefler is TECHNICALLY an average or less than average writer as professionals go. He is though a masterful story teller. It is much easier to fix the details if there's something worth fixing. This is especially true in these "cancel culture" days. A very appropriate appellation, "cancel culture" because that is EXACTLY what Clown World is doing. As my posts ought to end in self aggrandizement, I find that despite his many faults, Oscar Wilde was brilliant.

While Irillith has not been explicitly written to produce a shield, it is basically guaranteed that she can. Steven is correct about Calara, Dana and Helene so far showing no inclination towards personal shields. I think in large part Helene and Calara are not often in personal combat. Dana has been but she's shielded by Rachel who is the best "shieldstress" of all. Now Liunet is not actually a true Lioness. She's undergone "the Change" BUT is not going to receive "the Gift" (powers) so long as she remains with Charles=husband Charles (Charles actually means husband etymologically). That is why she is called Liunet: "half moon", because she's half a lioness. Etymology of Terran names is HUGE in TSM, ether consciously, or more likely, subconciously. Truly great storytellers are often unconcious of how cultural archetypes bubble up fropm their subconcious. Besides this, off the Invictus, Edraele is a tremendously gifted "shieldstress" but Luna has not shown that at all. As to colors, the shields of Tashana and Sakura reflect their elements and not colors. And now for another Public Service Announcement. Please remember this is a trashy fictional Space Opera and not to be taken seriously. Please find a life outside this fiction; if you can. Now back to your regularly scheduled Fan Wank.
