There haven't been a lot of constants in the 10+ years since Pretty Much It launched, but there has been at least one...

Spider-Man.

Half a decade ago, Jake, Mike, & I did commentary tracks for the original Tobey trilogy, as well as the Andrew series, but we never got around to Tom.

Now, in anticipation of all of our favorite Spidey characters returning in No Way Home, it's finally time for us to watch Spider-Man: Homecoming.

We have a lot of problems with MCU Spidey, but a few years removed from it are we able to find more to enjoy than we could back when it was first released? We can't help that we grew up with Tobey, and even Andrew to a point, but perhaps Tom will surprise us upon rewatch.

...or does Iron Man's looming shadow over this franchise make him the ultimate villain?

This is literally just 3 people who don’t know shit about Spider-Man waffling as if they do know anything about Spider-Man 😭 I love you guys, but this is genuinely insufferable to listen to. You guys aren’t complaining that this isn’t Spider-Man, you guys are complaining that this isn’t RAIMI’S Spider-Man, which is the least comic accurate live action Spider-Man adaptation we’ve ever gotten 😭 Please, don’t ever talk about Spider-Man ever again, cause you guys don’t know anything.

Fun track. I get the Stark issues, but for Spiderman to be in the MCU it would be strange to ignore Stark. He would be a huge inspiration for Peter who before getting his powers would have been closely following Stark as a titan of tech. Giving him all the bells in whistles and it feeling off seemed intentional considering the entire point was that he had to master himself with only his own abilities otherwise the excess is a liability. It also feeds into this Peter more organically becoming the Spiderman from the PS4 game down the line since he'll likely bring back his own version of Stark tech to help him. This film is by no means perfect but it brought Peter back to high school (minis 30 uear olds pretending to be teens) and gave him a relatively small adventure. Spiderman is at his core a friendly neighborhood Spiderman and it's nice to see him trying to tackle crime in his actual neighborhood instead of commuting to New York from square one. We were robbed a solid school fight which The Amazing Spiderman did well imo.

YUH! Honestly love Tom’s take on the role. But I love the other two as well. EDIT: I do agree I wish the cgi on the suit would be less, I do believe he wears the actual suit on set but FOR THE LIFE OF ME IDK why they composite the CGI over it anyway??? I understand doing it for the action scenes but when they already film him in the suit WHY. And regarding the whole Iron Man thing I understand but looking at how they integrated him into the MCU I think it makes sense and the best they could do. ALSO - The only Uncle Ben reference clear as day is in Far From Home with the briefcase

It’s okay for mike and me to disagree about our favorite and least favorite aspects of the films, BUT I draw the line at the aunt may criticisms. That was like the main thing about the Raimi trilogy that makes ZERO sense. Uncle Ben is supposedly the brother of peter’s dad, but both him and may are insanely old for what reason? Marisa Tomei is a blessing and idk who on earth would complain about seeing her in this film. She’s appropriately aged, as with basically everyone in this one 🖤

Back in the day, I hoped that they were gonna pull an Incredible Hulk, and introduced an older Peter who was kind of a fusion of Tobey and Andrew's versions. Like, he's in his late twenties/early thirties (I was hoping for Andy Samberg), working as a science teacher at Midtown High, and he and MJ are considering becoming parents. State he was one of the first superheroes in the MCU (which is the case in the comics), and he's fought all the classic villains. And during one of those battles, he lost his first love, Gwen Stacy. Boom, easy, simple. That way, you've got a fully-formed Peter Parker that you don't have to waste time setting up, and he can be killed off after a few movies to make way for Miles Morales.

Haven’t had time to watch this track but I can’t fucking wait! Just wanted to let you know my issues with the new video system. The pip is nice but I prefer being able to upload these onto YouTube so I can download it to keep buffering from being a problem. Other people seem to like it, so really I just want to be able to download it somehow.

in regards to the mj change, i think it actually has something to do with disney only purchasing the rights to use certain spider-man characters vs just changing something for the sake of it. the name change to michelle jones is just a workaround for them to be like “yeah THAT’S mj but not reeeeeally mj haha 🤪” - disney (2017) without having to pay for the rights to her character lol i swear i remember reading that somewhere but i also could be misremembering and making all that up. anyway.

I don't really have a "my Spider-man" as someone who is the same age as you guys. I love how Raimi did his own thing with Spider-man giving it a semi horror feel at times, the same way I love how Watts did these two movies giving it the more coming of age John Hughes feel. Both have their own spins while also feeling faithful enough to the character imo. Spider-man definitely entered the MCU at an awkward time since they were finishing the Thanos stuff in the same phase. But I like that they committed to Peter growing into Spider-man being the overarching thing of this trilogy. Homecoming was him realizing he doesn't have to be an Iron Man level hero to make a difference, FFH was him realizing he doesn't get to choose being Spider-Man or not, and I imagine NWH is him facing the more heavy stakes that being Spider-Man comes with. Tom said the series is going to be very different after this one, and I think that's because they're gonna bring him into the more traditional college scenarios. But yeah the suit CGI is definitely funky in parts of this but is thankfully a lot better in FFH. In the end I'm just super stoked you guys reunited to do this.

Although I respectfully disagree with a lot of what ya'll said in the track (although I really love Tobey's movies, Tom's Spidey/Peter is has been my favorite live-action incarnation of the character), I really love you're finally getting to MCU Spidey! Super excited for FFH next week. (And maybe...potentially...a certain animated Spidey movie is in the distant, distant future)

I think this captured the biggest issue I have with mcu spidey, I still generally like these movies and most of the casting, but as you guys mentioned the best parts are the small scale spider-man stuff, I wish they just leaned into the john hughes teen flick elements. It's also truly wild how little swinging he does, spiderman ps4 is also my current favourite iteration- it is so satisfying to swing around and i feel peter is much more active as a protagonist, creating his own tech and actually personally connected to the stakes in the story

Disney never bought the rights to any Spider-Man characters. They wouldn't buy the rights to Vulture, Spider-Man, Shocker, Ned, Flash Thompson, etc, and leave out Mary Jane. They just made a deal with Sony to help them make the Spidey movies, and then they get to put Spider-Man in the MCU films (like Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame). Why they chose MJ/Michelle instead of Mary Jane? Not sure. I imagine it's because they were going with a different look for MJ and didn't want toxic fans online freaking out about that.

Favourite Spider-Man is Spiderverse Miles Morales. I don’t know how they managed to effectively make it this epic “fate of the universe” story but also an incredibly personal Miles’ centric origin. It’s weird that MCU Peter Parker is also trying to do the same balance but it just doesn’t work

Hey Eric, first feedback here for ya long time fan, Patreon player doesn't allow downloads and i USUALLY download the files to play either on VLC pc or phone as i can PIP it with other apps/chrome watching the content you are reacting too.
