(public post)

hey londoners...and everybody.

this is just a quickie mostly news-y post.

i've had a quiet weekend with ash.  thanksgiving in london was bleak and depressing and lonely. neil is gone for a couple weeks - he left wednesday for a writing retreat up in his house on the isle of skye - and i'm using the time to quickly indoctrinate ash with a love for ABBA.

quickly, quickly, loves, before his father finds out.

swiftly, and with focus.

every morning has been a "winner takes it all" dance party.

hush, child, not a word to your father.

ash also just had his first school "holiday concert". my heart exploded. for reasons known only to the gods, he insisted (and i mean insisted) on wearing his david bowie pajama pants. i let him. i mean why the fuck not, whatever works.

yes, his antlers are hands.

wave wave.

..........

after the merch post, i have a few more community-midned posts to make (i'm drafting several).....but right now, with the holiday merch needing to go out and the london shows upon us.....

first: a reminder to all people coming to the union chapel shows that the doors are at 5:30 pm FOR ALL SHOWS (dec 5, 6, 13 and 14). all the shows are VERY SOLD OUT. please come on time!!! shows starts 6:30 sharp and ends at 10:30. bring a cushion for your bum. i am not joking. also maybe bring snacks.

second: there's going to be A LOT OF SHINTAIDO in london!!

shintaido. yes. it's like a combination of yoga, karate, improv, and primal scream therapy. sound weird? it is. it's also easy and really fucking fun.

so....david is coming from prague to turn us all into screaming, stretching weirdos RIGHT IN THE VENUE!!! union chapel is big and has a lotta rooms! come early, do shintaido, got get food, come back for the show.

being able to practice this kind of movement/awareness-oriented stuff with the community has been supremely fantastic while on tour. it's nice to be able to BE with everybody like this.

if you've been to one of the shintaido practices, please comment below and encourage london people to come and tell them how goddamn fun and not scary and easy it is!

and london people, book early and often and bring pals - this is OPEN TO ALL, not just to patrons, but i'm not going to spread this around on social media because the class sizes need to stay SMALL. but feel free to spread the word among friends and bring people you think might like it.

here's a little letter david wrote to the community. i'll hopefully see a lot of you there. i need this practice before the shows more than anybody....it opens my soul. i won't be at every practice, but i'll be at 80% of them as time allows. i may have to miss the 12th, since it's not a show day, but i'm gonna try.

...............

the info, from david.

PRE-CONCERT SHINTAIDO IN LONDON @ UNION CHAPEL!

(open to public, and you don't need to be coming to the concert to take part!!!)

Hello lovely AFP Patreon members,

You may remember that Amanda wrote this fantastic phrase in a previous Patreon post about Shintaido and the free speech issues we had on tour in Ireland and so on:  "VOICE is the new SIGN.” I hope she’ll let me steal that slogan and use it for Shintaido, because it is fitting.

As you may know, I've been traveling with Amanda's There Will Be No Intermission tour offering Shintaido trainings in the afternoons before concerts. Shintaido: a modern art of movement from Japan. Wild, wonderful, energizing. For COMPLETE BEGINNERS of all shapes, sizes, and physical abilities. This amazing contemporary Japanese art of movement moved people (pun intended) during the There Will Be No Intermission tour from Prague through Limerick. We practiced on the beach, in various yoga studios, dance studios, parks, and in an art gallery.

The Shintaido-practices-before-the-concerts is coming to London in December. See below.

Here we are in Bexhill-on-Sea:

He we are crammed into a dance studio In Prague:

…and here's a little video in Cork (shot by wonderwoman Gaby Motola):

And now, pre-concert Shintaido LONDON details:

December 5, 6, 13, 14!
all 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Union Chapel Upper Hall (yes, that is the concert venue, but a different room)
Compton Terrace, London N1 2UN, UK

Price: sliding scale £2 - £25 - please pay what you can.

SPACE IS LIMITED so please buy a ticket in advance at:
https://shintaido.weebly.com/amanda-palmer-pre-concert.html

You can come to more than one Shintaido practice. It's best to buy a ticket. If it's not sold out, you can just show up and pay cash or with a card - we will announce if it's sold out here on the patreon.

In case you're wondering who is offering these Shintaido practices:

I'm David Franklin (a.k.a. manta) and a Shintaido instructor, visual artist, performance artist, and video- and filmmaker. I was part of the same art scene in Boston in the late 90s and early 2000s where the Dresden Dolls first made their debut. I also BTW worked with another long-time Amanda Palmer collaborator Michael Pope to produce the Dresden Dolls first two music videos, Girl Anachronism and Coin-Operated Boy, and the experimental film/performance Neovoxer.

And the pre-concert what? Shintaido is a modern Japanese art of body movement and expression of life. Read more about it at the British Shintaido website http://www.shintaido.co.uk/what-is-shintaido/ or you can watch a 5-minute info video at http://shintaido.weebly.com/video.html. The practices are for complete beginners, people in any kind of physical condition, except that sorry :-(   the Union Chapel Upper Hall is not wheelchair accessible. Wear comfy clothes for movement.

Questions? Email David Franklin at shintaido@dfranklin.org or WhatsApp me at +420 608 534 383

Ash wonderfully dressed for his holiday concert brings memories of when my twin sons, now grown up to be amazing fathers, stood among the other children singing Christmas songs at their daycare center, in Sweden where we live, and I was totally unexpectedly overwhelmed by happy tears streaming down my face. Thank you for reminding me of that moment.

ABBA! Oh you must! Matylda's first encounter with pop music, and the ONLY tape she would fall asleep to in the car (yeah, we have a car with a tape deck). Everything was ABBA. We went to a sports center and there was G'n'Rs "Paradise City" on, and she said it was ABBA.

Will the Patron meet up on Friday be after the show? I can't come any earlier (hopefully I'll get there for doors, they ask disabled people to be there for just before the doors open so they can get us seated) because everyone's got work. Also, why the fuck not wear Bowie pants?! Best dressed right there!

So sad, but I have two tickets for Friday that I now can’t use. Does anyone want them? Happy to give them to anyone who can make good use of them ...

Really looking forward to the show this Friday! Unfortunately I've found out that, due to the train strikes, my last train home is a fair bit earlier than it would have been under normal circumstances 😠 So please forgive me when I slip out early (I will probably have to leave around 10) 😞

I was laughing. Then I imagined Axl Rose doing "When I Kissed the Teacher" and I laughed some more.

And I would like to come to shintaido on the 14th with my daughter. Can we just come?

I’m coming from Germany, is there a place for me to store my backpack? Is there room for me to have it with me in my seat?
