I've been getting a lot of questions about Trash 3 from iZotope. In this  video, I'll show you how I would set up Trash 3 in Bitwig. The focus is on recreating the core features without achieving an identical interface or sound but maintaining a similar workflow. Here's a summary:

  • Wave Shaper Module: Utilizes Bitwig's XY FX device to morph between different wave shapers.
  • Convolution Reverb: Implements convolution reverb with the ability to morph between different impulses, using impulse responses extracted from Trash 2.
  • Envelope Follower and Filter: Incorporates an envelope follower and a filter for dynamic effect shaping.
  • Auto Gain: Adds auto gain for consistent volume levels.
  • Band Splitter: Although a band splitter is mentioned, it's suggested that it may not be necessary for replicating Trash 3's functionality in Bitwig.

The process involves:

  1. Using a Filter+ device (with filters turned off) as a starting point.
  2. Setting up an XY FX device to house and morph between different wave shapers.
  3. Grouping devices into a chain for macro control, enabling dynamic shaping of effects.
  4. Implementing convolution reverb with a selection of impulse responses for varied reverb effects.
  5. Adding dynamic control with an envelope follower to modulate effect parameters based on the audio signal.
  6. Creating a "Heat" effect to simulate saturation or compression by manipulating the decay time.
  7. Incorporating stereo widening effects and finalizing the setup with an auto level plugin to ensure consistent output levels.

The video concludes with the creator offering the Bitwig preset used in the tutorial for download, mentioning the necessity for users to source their own impulse responses due to copyright restrictions. This approach allows viewers to experiment and extend the setup based on their preferences, highlighting the flexibility and power of Bitwig Studio in emulating complex effects processors like Trash 3.
