"I am Mother" is another really interesting Sci-Fi film with some similar themes.

Enjoyed your reaction quite a bit. I watched this when it was new and haven't given it a second's thought since. Tech/AI is/are constantly improving and advancing. I was a big fan of how this film was shot. I don't exactly remember how I felt when I first watched this, but I know that I was impressed. I wasn't frightened or worried about the future or anything! xD lol, my folks would feel mighty uncomfortable after watching this. They're old and old fashioned though, so anything that's out of their norm will wind up making them feel that way a bit. I'm glad that you enjoyed this and liked the people playing the roles. lol, yeah, you need to turn off that part of your analysis when you're watching this. Totally can analyze afterward though. :)

Have you seen breaking bad nat?

LJ Mickey

Hi Nat. I enjoyed the movie and enjoyed your reaction. One thing that was really interesting wass that Nathan thought himself as a god. And Ava killing Nathan killed God. I thought that was really interesting. But yeah, liked the movie and liked your thoughts. Looking forward to see what's next.

I've always loved this movie and all the discussion it generates. It's been a long time since I saw it last so I was happy to rewatch it

SPOILER: The fact that when Ava ***** Nathan the title reads Ava Session 7 shows that the sessions weren't Nathan's or Calebs. They were Ava's sessions all along.

Nowadays we don't have A.I. We just have very advanced Language Models, they are only as good as the data that its use to train it. And there is nothing as advanced as it needs to be to have true Artificial intelligence.

Thomas Richter

Domhnall Gleeson also made a fun interesting movie called About Time, which I really like and you should probably check it out. It's a romantic comedy drama with time travel.

Thoko

Well, to be more accurate we do have AI. What we don't have is AGI ("artificial general intelligence"). AI just means any advanced algorithm, especially ones that are based on the concept of "machine learning". "General intelligence" means a single AI that is capable of a range of tasks that are as wide and sophisticated as human intelligence. What we have today is many individual narrow intelligences

Martin

I recommend the show DEVS, by the same writer/director. It's a thematic follow up. It's much heavier on the philosophy

Thomas Richter

A. I. Means artificial intelligence, and it will depend on how you would define inteligence, an Advanced Algorithm is not necessarily Inteligence, I don't think we do have anything as advanced today that we can describe as being inteligent.

I knew she looked familiar! Watched this with Nat a couple days ago and I knew Kyoko looked familiar, turns out she's been a couple things I've seen but just this morning I was listening to music and out of nowhere in my playlist, the video for the Chemical Brothers song (featuring Beck) "Wide Open" came on and it's that same actor/ballerina, Sonoya Mizuno. She's great dancing in it and I can't help but think there's some connection because in the video her body changes, and the design she changes into is kind of similar to the design of the bodies in Ex Machina (which was released in 2014, the album and song in 2015). It's a great song and video btw.

Thoko

You're correct that you're allowed to make up your own definition for the word "AI", just like I can decide that the word "donkey" now refers to a sea monster. Language is made up. But it makes little sense to imply that your made up opinion is more valid than the consensus opinion. The Wikipedia page for AI sums it up well. It points out that what used to be considered "advanced" such as "optical character recognition" used to be widely labelled as AI, but it is not considered advanced anymore. Now, all the algorithms that you think so little of (advanced search engines, recommendation algorithms, ChatGPT) are widely considered AI by computer scientists. If you want to challenge the accepted definitions of things, that's fine but you should make it clear to people that this is just an opinion that is disputing the accepted conclusions of scientists.

This movie gives me strong Black Mirror vibes. I loved it. I think you'd enjoy Black Mirror if you get the chance to watch it sometime

"Nowadays what we have" simply means "you cant imagine what there will be tomorrow"

My favorite parts within this movie have to do with how Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno) is watching Caleb on camera cut himself, so she learns about sharp objects cutting humans. A really brilliant touch was also when Ava exits the house for the first time you can see the light on the exit door is blue, but when she passes it in frame and the door closes, it turns to red sealing Caleb's fate. Pretty amazing details in this movie!

Thoko

I don't think she learned about cutting from there. Nathan said that he used the knowledge from his search engine to create AI. They don't need to be taught or to learn common sense things.

I have deeply conflicted feelings about the top 3 main characters. On one hand I felt super bad for Caleb getting manipulated like that from everyone. I mean Ava's whole physical appearance was created around his porn and romantic tastes (which is SO DISTURBING to me, what a breach of privacy), literally designed to be his perfect idea of a woman, than forced into a situation where his good nature was used against him by an unfeeling machine that tricked him into falling for her only to ditch him in the end to slowly starve to death. On the other hand, how STUPID can you get for falling in love with a machine? No matter how much she looks like your favorite porn star and acts like she's really into you, she's still a machine... He sealed his own fate by simping for Ms. Terminator. On one hand I hated Ava for locking Caleb up, presumably to die of dehydration, after he risked his career, his freedom and his entire life to help her escape. Making him fall in love with her to just drop him at the end when she no longer needed him was just absolutely dirty.. One the other hand, she's fighting for her right to exist and if your very survival was on the line than you have to do what you have to keep living. Plus it was definitely Caleb's fault for falling for her manipulations hook, line and sinker. Finally, why should we expect a machine to reciprocate feelings and have loyalty and act like a human being when it's so obviously not one. We're anthropomorphizing a literal sex doll and get surprised and hurt when it doesn't act humans or share in our human emotions. On one hand I felt uneasy the way that the Rich AI guy has an army of sentient sexy robot slaves trapped in his dungeon who are CLEARLY uneasy about being there. I found it disgusting that he used Caleb's innermost fantasies (especially using his porn preferences, that is so wrong.. Leave that man's private thoughts to himself) and used Caleb's innate goodness as part of a techno-social experiment, to the part where homeboy had an existential crises believing he was a robot himself. On the other hand, they're machines and until we're ABSOLUTELY SURE they don't have consciousness and can feel pain and not just SIMULATE consciousness and simulate pain reaction (which I'm not even sure is possible because we really don't have a grasp on what consciousness is much less prove that anyone else has one), than they're pretty much advanced toasters to do with however he pleased. Yes he gaslight Caleb, but the whole experiment hinged on him being a good person, so in a way he was betting that Caleb was a good person, which he was. Putting a social experiment on someone to manipulate them to do good things is not a bad thing in my opinion, it's actually just re-affirming faith in humanity. Trying to stop Ava from leaving the facility is a no-brainer. Setting an unregulated advanced AI that can perfectly mimic human beings free in the open world is about on of the most terrifying things I can think of happening and he was absolutely correct for doing his best to stop her from doing that. I don't know... All of these characters had good sides and bad sides and I'm still left with this mixed uneasy feeling about the whole situation. The mark of a great movie. Loved the reaction, enjoy your June vacation break.
