Do I need to watch Puss in Boots 1 before Puss in Boots 2? I've seen a lot of requests to watch PIB: The Last Wish and would love to just watch it if it will make sense to me, but if it'd be better to watch PIB 1 first, I'd love to know that too.

Animated? How about some Japanese animation. Like Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Spirited Away, or Princess Mononoke

Aside from puss there’s only 1 recurring character and the movie does a good job of giving her a proper introduction

You'll be able to follow along if you skip Puss in Boots, but you'll be playing catchup with some of the character histories/development. It's best to watch both.

I don’t think we need a deep dive into the PiBEU (Puss in Boots Extended Universe). Just the Last Wish is fine.
