Happy Force Friday Nat. Really excited to be watching some new Star Wars content with you and see what you thought of it.

Anonymous

Shoulda been interstellar 😢

Anonymous

Fan service express…all aboard. If this means we sit thru 8-9 as well…ooof 😆

Anonymous

Always happy to see you react to my favourite series. I will be curious on your thoughts on this trilogy. This one is fun at least but the next few.... I hope it doesn't ruin things for you lol

Anonymous

People love to hate on the sequels. I get they aren't the best, but neither are any of the other movies :p I like them, they're good, and the original trilogy was very influential, but still weren't THAT much better than the new ones

Joe Blankenship

I liked this one. I don't have as much hate for the sequels as some do. Small list of complaints? Sure.

Danishprince

Personally I really love Force Awakens! I think it did a brilliant job op making a solid foundation to build upon, it had some fun new characters, nice return to old ones and the visuals + score is insanely good! <3

Anonymous

I mean what kind of Rebel operation lets a new “Empire” rise maybe 20 yrs after Vader and the og Empire was taken out. Some operation 😆

Randee Carreno

Happy Friday, Natalie! 😊 I'm thinking about watching this one right away just so I can hear what you think of this one. Especially during one part towards the end. Just my opinion, but this one does have some good scenes in it. I'll be sure to have at least one or two white claw hard seltzers on hand for 8 and 9. LOL! That's cool about taking your time on watching "The Book of Boba Fett". Just be sure that you do watch it before you watch season 3 of "The Mandalorian" whenever that comes out because of spoilers for that upcoming season. The Have a great day & weekend! 😊 Stay Golden! 💛 P.S. I've missed you yelling "SCRAMING PLANES" every time there was a Tie-Fighter on the screen. 🤣🤣🤣

Tony Sanson

I actually have no problem with Force Awakens. We meet great new characters, there's a lot of setup to build off of, things are teased. Yes, old plots get rehashed but it's still a fun romp. Star Wars looked like it was going to continue with its awesomeness. And then Last Jedi happens. But I'll harp more on that when we get there.

Niklas

Happy to see you watch the Star Wars sequels, but I also hope we get a reaction video to The New Mutants another day. :)

Anonymous

Nat-“It’s the same thing, they couldn’t come up with something new?” Answer-Exactly 😆

Andrew Howard

No worries about taking so long to get to the sequels. I waited for just over 10 years between watching them! Anywho, I still enjoy watching the sequels, despite some pretty glaring flaws later on. Hope you enjoy them, and if not, I hope you at least get some fun complaining about them.

Jomero

I don't hate this movie. It gave my daughter a female leading protagonist in the SW world to look up to. But the problem with this movie is that they hired JJ Abrams to direct this. He loves his "Mystery Boxes." He loves putting a mystery out into the world, just for it to exist, without knowing the answer himself. Lost is a great example of him doing this. Lots of "Look at this mysterious thing! Even we don't know what it is. But we'll tackle that later. Maybe." Had they contracted him to do the next movie, then maybe it would have been better. But, no, he put these mystery boxes out there and open-ended threads and just left others to deal with them. And when someone did deal with them, when he came back for the third movie he felt like he had to undo the undo's. It just created a giant mess.

Tony Johnson

Well, this should be a fun series of movies.

Logan Kerlee

I'm PUMPED for this series. :)

Tay Schumaker

Best of the 3. Will probably avoid comments for TLJ as it is so divisive and I'm tired of having the same arguments over and over. The ST, to me, is largely trash. TFA is the best of the three but mostly just apes ANH. Rise of Skywalker is bad. Adam Driver is the best thing about these movies, he's so good. The thing that bums me out the most is that Favreau and Filoni are going to have to make all their great post ROTJ content and make it fit into the JJ ST.

J. J.

TFA is pure nostalgia grab but at least you can see that when watching it and there's some fun in it, TLJ and RoS just shit everything Star Wars.

Anonymous

I don’t like how this movie just copied the original pretty much so I actually liked the last Jedi better but I hated the rise of sky-walker

Anonymous

Yeah I agree, I didn’t watch the originals growing up and when I saw them I was kinda underwhelmed. The story line is way better in the originals because the sequels are so disjointed but I find them more entertaining🤣

Adrian

My second favorite of the ST. Definitely unoriginal in places but did its job in welcoming people back after 10 years. Say what you want about JJ but I think he knows how to cast good ensembles, at least.

LightsCameraJake

would we be suprised though? Nat is pretty versed in the film industry and has always been critical of script writing and blocking angles and execution. She might tear this series apart lmfao xD

Philippe Dessaints

"How can she be good at that thing she's never done before" Welcome to one of the recurring themes of the trilogy !

Anonymous

This was a decent movie. I did not mind the similarities to ANH except making the new death star an entire freaking planet. That was the worst part of this movie. Nat, buckle up because this ship will start listing severely with the next movie.

Nathan Smith

This is actually one of my favorite star wars films and I'm excited to watch again. Hope you went in with an open mind and ignored the rabid comments!

Zakk Pierce

If I watch these next 3 It's gonna be in the hopes that Nat doesn't let the flaws go without comment lol Nat doesn't turn her brain off when she does her reactions. So I'm sure there is nothing to worry about.

SmokeAndACoffee

So glad you're watching these, Nat! I really enjoyed this trilogy a lot, and think a good 85% of the hate it gets is just people being biased, and dumb. They're definitely better than the prequel trilogy!

Anonymous

I like Force Awakens a lot, though it's essentially just a well-done remake of a new hope. The next one, the last Jedi, is definitely the most polarizing but I personally think it is the best star wars movie, including the original trilogy. It brings something completely new to the table in terms of themes and attention to detail in the same way The Empire Strikes back did in the early 80s. I hope you feel the same but understand if you don't!

Anonymous

Looking forward to this watch along. Despite its similarities to ANH I really loved this film. I can’t wait for your reaction to The Last Jedi. It’s my favorite Star Wars film since Empire.

James M

I love Ep 7 so much I cosplay as Kylo Ren in the 501st Legion. LOL

Anonymous

Yay! Natalie I’ve been relentlessly commenting that your reaction to Star Wars 3: Revenge of the Sith hit over 1 million views on YouTube! That’s a milestone! Congrats! I’m so glad you’re tackling the last 3 episodes. The conclusion of the Skywalker Saga.

Anonymous

Nat do yourself a favor and don’t finish this saga.

Anonymous

Nat your first ever video to hit 1 million views is Star Wars 3. You can use this as a celebration for that! 🤗 I’m not pro or con for the new trilogy, I just love Star Wars. And seeing you react to the final saga sheds a tear in my eye whether you like either Team 123, Team 456, or Team 789. ❤️

Omni Jacala

Wow, I'm surprised nobody in the comments has gone out of their way to say "storm troopers aren't clones" yet. =P After the Republic became the Empire in Ep 3, the Empire discontinued the use of clones of Jango Fett, and instead began conscripting people at a young age. But no movie or show ever actually explained this outright until The Bad Batch (though it's heavily implied by the dialogue in Force Awakens), so it's a common misconception that storm troopers are still clones. And a lot of people don't watch the animated shows, so it's probably still not a well known fact among more casual Star Wars fans.

A.J. Workman

I get that there are people who don’t like the sequels and have genuinely issues with them. My problem though is A: that they pick at the flaws in the sequels while acting like the originals and prequels don’t have just as many if not more at times. And B: that in every video or discussion about them, they make it their life goal to try to either convince people not to watch them at all or try to ruin the discussion for those of us who love them

Robert C

I think The Force Awakens is just good fun. Yeah, it's a repeat of A New Hope, but I was fine with that after so many years of no Star Wars. I also loved The Last Jedi. I know that one is divisive, and it had problems, but I thought it was more good than bad. And the things that people hate about it I think are fine - I liked all of the character stuff, I just didn't think that all of the scenes/decisions made a lot of sense. But the Rise of Skywalker was truly awful. In addition to the plot/decisions not making any sense, they also spent an inordinate amount of time trying to roll back the developments from TLJ. They should have just stayed the course and at least pleased half of the fans instead of none of them. Sort of like Justice League. Course corrections like that just never turn out well.

Josh Baker

Lol, by what standards are the sequels better than the prequels? There was literally no plan for the sequels.

Anonymous

I can get behind this opinion. I remember walking out of the theater thinking "well it's a start, it's OK'. By the next day, I had no interest in watching it again but didn't feel like a waste of my time which is how 8 and 9 hit.

Josh Baker

Yes. There has to be a well thought-out plan for a Star Wars trilogy to work coherently. I’m glad some people look deeper than just the surface level.

Jason Dolan

People complain about Rey being able to mind control the First Order Trooper but it never bothered me because she literally just learned how to go into other peoples' minds the scene before with Kylo Ren. If she hadn't had that scene with Kylo Ren, then the complaints would be justified. But since they gave it some justification, it just came off as Rey learned a new trick and she used it.

GG

It's so painfully clear to me that you're been influenced by your boyfriend's complaints about the movie. "They're just repeating the same story", "she's just already good at it?" like...it's painfully obvious. And it makes me sad.

GG

"She's just ridiculously lucky" no, she's a scavenger and knows imperial systems well enough to know what part to pull. So sick of this "She's a mary sue" argument.

Darryl Low

Episode 7 is Disney's idea of a Star Wars movie, and certainly not a George Lucas Star Wars movie. They threw out his original story ideas in favour of a "retro" movie, as he called it. I really enjoyed this movie when it came out, and I still enjoy it. Daisy Ridley and John Boyega were great leads, and seeing the original stars back on the big screen was exciting, especially Luke. And John Williams' score was so good. His theme for Rey is beautiful. Unfortunately, the next movie undid a lot of the magic of this movie for me. The super pilot Poe Dameron, whose death fooled you, was written to die, but they liked the character, so they kept him alive. Unfortunately, they never thought about that in the script. Why does Poe leave the planet Jakku without finding BB-8 first?? Bit of a plot hole 🤔 You definitely picked up on a lot of the things everyone, and probably Tyler, have been discussing for years. I would certainly enjoy watching a Tyler rant 😂 Nat's take on making a landing at lightspeed - "Risky and Fun". And Cover Girl Rey "Maybe she's born with it" 😄 I loved you trying to guess who played Phasma all the way through. And if you want to know why See-Threepio has a red arm, Disney wanted you to buy a book to find out why 🙄 I enjoyed your video today Nat - part reaction, part critique, and never less than entertaining as always. Thanks, and as always, thanks for all your awesome work this week. Have a great weekend Nat 💛

Tay Schumaker

Not sure if you're even reading these, but if you plan on watching Mandalorian s# you 100% have to watch Boba Fett. It's essentially Mandalorian s2.5. It is a must watch to continue the Mandalorian

Jason Dolan

Glad to see that Nat recognized Rey was able to fight off Unkar Plutt's goons earlier in the movie with her staff which is why she is able to fight with the Lightsaber.

Anonymous

These comments once again show: "Nobody hates Star Wars as much as Star Wars fans". These are not awful movies, by any stretch, and are very enjoyable.

Jason Dolan

Luke had two weeks of training at most from Jedis, so I think if you HAVE the Force, you are able to pretty much figure it out by yourself.

GG

Yes. The Force Awakens is very similar to A New Hope, but that's kind of the point. George Lucas himself made the prequels and the original trilogy similar. In his words "it's like poetry, they rhyme". Yes Rey could beat Kylo Ren, because he JUST killed his dad, he JUST got shot by a wookie bowcaster, and he's not trying to beat her, he's trying to recruit her. If you want to talk about a bad story, let's talk about Anakin Skywalker, as a toddler, being able to fly a starfighter, and blew up a droid mothership. Also, you do this thing where while you're talking, you stare off screen? You miss parts of the film. Poe Dameron is shown flying in the rescue mission, but you totally miss it until he's getting off the ship at the rebel base.

Patrick Egan

Just a heads-up, this movie takes place well AFTER The Mandalorian. Mandalorian is about 5 years after Return Of The Jedi, this trilogy is about 30 years after RotJ.

Danishprince

Rey learning to use The Force to battle quickly = Bad. Luke learning to use The Force to destroy a Death Star quickly = good. Huh..

GG

Luke uses the force in Episode 4. With NO training he destroys the death star. Rey does 2 minor things, she mind tricks a stormtrooper, and she force pulls the lightsaber. That's it!

It Hurt A Lot

First off when you finish this trilogy I would love to hear Tyler's rant on it. But I was disappointed by the similarities too, especially Death Star 2.0. The fact Rey defeated Kylo with no training, yeah right. But I did love the scene when the lightaber whipped past Kylo into Rey's hand. I remember yelling in the theater in excitement at that. It also set up tons of questions that us fans were able to speculate on waiting for the next episode. Where did Snoke come from? Who was Rey's family? How was Luke going to react to seeing the lightsaber? We were genuinely excited for The Last Jedi

Anonymous

A couple of quick observations - much of the idea of the Force and Star Wars in general took its inspiration from differing Eastern philosophies - one of those ideas is the cyclical nature of life, so the idea of patterns of behaviors/events and people filling familiar roles again and again isn't exactly unique to these sequels. I think a key aspect that is often missed with the Force when people talk about how Force users relate to it, is that the Force has a will of its own, and it interacts with the universe as a whole just as much, if not more than, the Force users when they seek to control the Force willingly, and since the Force is supposed to bind all of existence who can say exactly what influence it has on even those not capable of manipulating the Force, which is to say that if the Force wants to accomplish something, the strength/experience of those involved isn't really a concern in the matter. Luke making the exhaust port hit, Anakin being able to pilot a pod racer, Rey being able to Mind Trick a storm trooper(after several attempts) are all implausible for the 'untrained', but through the Force, are accomplished. Either device can be used to hand-wave away the convenient plot progression present in all of these movies - which can be just as easily ascribed to lazy or uninspired writing - but when you have 'Intelligent Space Magic' baked into the building blocks of the story, that criticism isn't the only explanation one can arrive at.

DarkJokester

I love the fact that you were questioning the lazy writting in this movie. Rey is a Mary-Sue character who can do everything better than anyone else, despite never having any knowlede or training beforehand. Imagine if Luke defeated Darth Vader in A New Hope, that's basiclly what happend in this movie... Kylo Ren should pose no more threat to her after defeating him like that. Great reaction :D

john collins

I had the same issues with rey being so good so quickly with the force but as i've watched it again a couple times i've just accepted that they did that to have a cool lightsaber fight with her and kylo. I recognize how bad these movies are but for some reason still enjoy them. It's sort of how I feel about episodes 1-3 but in a different way.

Curaitis

Lets see what she will say after the next two. Force Awakens is by far the best of those three, haha.

Jason Dolan

Anakin and Luke are WAY more Mary Sues than Rey. I'll win that debate any day of the week.

Jason Dolan

Did they ever write a book why C-3PO had a silver leg in A New Hope?

Curaitis

Oh Nat, this three Reactions will be a hot mess. Fake-wokeness meets far right anti wokeness. You didnt do yourself a favor by watching them but i understand it. Im interested what your final verdict will be after they....well you will see what they did with Star Wars and how dumb the Sequels are. at least Tyler seems a Man of reason and understand how bad the Sequels are if i read the Comments right cause they are blaming him to be "anti-woke" hahaha.

Kevin Maguire

Fun fact: The stormtrooper that released Rey was played by Daniel Craig.

Jason Dolan

Haha I know. Maybe it's because she's a woman? That's literally the ONLY difference between her and Anakin and Luke, except that Luke and Anakin were raised by loving families and coddled their whole lives, Luke by his aunt and uncle and then he's immediately made the leader of the Rebellion and Anakin raised by his mother and then Obi Wan Kenobi. Meanwhile, Rey has been on her own practically her entire life, raised by a Fagan, and having to fight off rapists. She scavenges downed Imperial Starships, builds and repairs ships, has flown ships, is proficient with a bow staff, and has worked on the Falcon for YEARS with Plutt. She is literally the most capable lead a Star Wars movie has ever given us, but because she's a woman, she's a Mary Sue. So infuriating. It really separates the smart people from the dumb people, that particular complaint. I'm just like... welp, your hate has blinded you and from your Point of View, I guess the Jedi are evil, lol.

Jason Dolan

Exactly, thank you for your Ted Talk. I got so much out of it! :)

Anonymous

I think that she's old enough to judge it by herself... and since when is it healthy to avoid complicated subject an/or work of art. The greatness of art IS the difference of opinions.

Sean

Not even six minutes in and Nat points out the biggest problem of this movie: It's the same storyline. Perfect!

Tiago Borges

Fun fact: The stormtrooper who releases Rey is Daniel Craig

Jayson Phillips

Yeah have to watch the last one to understand why she is so good so quick. AND NEW MUTANTS MON?

Anonymous

Haha damn Nat was super critical of this one 😂. Can't help but feel like too many people gave her their "hot takes" before she got to see it herself. This trilogy turned into a complete mess, but when the Force Awakens came out it was mostly received really well and IMO was a perfectly fun and coherent foundation for what could have been a great new trilogy. Unfortunately it was totally derailed by TLJ.

Anonymous

The fans always love the most and hate the most. I think only The Rise of Skywalker is an awful movie. The others have good parts.

Dooly

Oh boy, get ready for the train wreck that is Last Jedi. Expect more of Daisy Ridley’s gritted teeth performance. Also, lol, ‘teacher’. What’s that? Rey can do anything.

Joshua Rodriguez

I totally agree that something original would have been great. The repeat Death Star and overall plot being a rehash was a missed opportunity. All that being said, I still don’t agree with the point about Rey picking up the force too fast. Luke did barely any training but destroyed the Death Star because Obi just said “use the force”. Making that shot was infinitely more implausible than a scavenger who’s been on her own all her life being able to fight an arrogant and bleeding-out kid who’s been coasting on the fact that he was one of the only force users still around. People compare their fight to Vader v Luke, and compare Vader to Kylo…they’re not the same, Kylo is nowhere near Vader, that’s kinda the whole point of the character.

Tay Schumaker

I enjoyed the multiple close-ups of Poe flying and showing what a great pilot he is, and she didn't even recognize he was alive.

Tay Schumaker

Oh and timeline wise, Mandalorian takes place 5 years after ROTJ and 25 years before this movie.

Steve J

Nah, just episode 5 & 6, the rest are really kinda bad IMO

Steve J

One of my issues with the prequels: way too much political happenings and board room meetings talking about the state of the galaxy. One of my biggest issues with the sequels: NO explanation of the political state of the galaxy. Nothing makes sense who any of the groups are, where they are, what they're doing. I like Force Awakens, and I think Rey is a cool character, just really wanted some tidbits of backstory or something/anything. JJ.A. just set all this up with no intention of resolving any of the plot points (past or future), just left a bunch of the building blocks out for the next director to play with, thinking it would be a creative way to tell the stories moving forward. Unfortunately this (IMO) utterly blows up in Lucasfilm's face. From the very first scene of the next movie you could tell it was going to be a shit-show of 'subverting expectations' for all the wrong reasons... (i.e. no reason) Lucasfilm really needed to slam on the brakes during The Last Jedi production and reassess WTF they were doing, but that's ancient history at this point.

Fraser

God that reaction was the most infuriating thing ever

Jason Dolan

I know she said she went into it with an open mind but it was obvious her fiance had already imprinted the complaints he had, Rey being too powerful (despite being about as powerful as Luke and Anakin, while more capable due to not being coddled her entire life like Anakin and Luke were) and some of the plot similarities to ANH. It was similar to when Cassie on Popcorn in Bed just gave up on Tim Burton's Batman about 20 minutes into it.

Brian Jones

Well... You finally got to it, and you saw the same flaws most of us saw in the film. It's basically a retread of A New Hope, with a few changes here and there. This really wasn't the film that drove the wedge into the fanbase, it was the next one. But the cracks were starting to show here. Disney's biggest fault with the Star Wars universe in general is it's inability to depart from the core characters and story telling tropes, and actually tell a truly original story. And sadly, given the nature of the majority of the streaming shows offered, they seem damned and determined to stay that course. But don't get me wrong, these movies do have some highlights here and there, and there is some fun to be had. I'm really glad you're finally finishing the saga. Great reaction as always, stay golden.

Guy-on-Couch

I always laugh when people complain about Rey...did they forget that Luke blew up the Death Star using the Force on the second day he EVER left his planet...or how Anakin who was 9, blew up the Trade Federation ship the day after leaving his planet for the first time....Rey lived on her own since she was a little kid, she mentions she's a pilot (although never left the planet), shown being able to fight with her staff against multiple attackers and yet people are like how can she do that....Kylo Ren was also injured by a boltcaster that was blowing people back 20 feet and he took it...And he was also not trying to kill Rey, that's why she is able to fight him off....Even though Nat said she didn't listen to any complaints, this like Game of Thrones, has been spoiled for her reactions...you can't help but, even at least subliminally, think about it being bad just because you heard people talk about it....The sequels are fine...They end up going in a different direction than a lot of people would have liked and that's why they cry about it....

Guy-on-Couch

I always laugh at the Rey stuff...have no problem with a 9 year old and a whiney teenager blowing huge ships/stations up saving the whole galaxy but HEY WHY IS SHE USING THE MIND TRICK!!!!!

Anonymous

Or, maybe, she just feels it isn't good, like many of us do.

Anonymous

Hi Nat, first time commenter but I really feel the need to weigh in here. This comment section is your introduction to the Star Wars fandom of the last 5 years. I think it's really unfortunate that you let other people's opinions influence yours before you even watched the movie. From the looks of some of these comments, it seems you didn't exactly go in open-minded and for that reason I'm not going to watch this video, becauseit isn't really a 'blind' reaction, is it? It's a shame because it would have been way more interesting for us viewers if you had gone in completely blind and formed your own opinion - it's what I was looking forward to with this reaction, and if you came to these criticisms on your own, organically, then so be it. i really hope you can have a properly open mind for the next two movies. There is a lot to love, and a lot to hate, but I hope you can do both in equal measure.

Peter Yocum

Now that she's seen the movie, somebody make sure she gets to see Matt the Radar Technician: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaOSCASqLsE

Normally I read through the other comments before posting my own to avoid repeating the same points brought up already, but this time I'm making an exception as I feel these comments will be quite heated and I want to say some things before I lose my train of thought. (I will read them after). I was first exposed to the franchise at the age of 5, back in 1980 - I went and saw a double bill of the first two films back to back upon the release of the second: Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back (back in 1980, A New Hope was called JUST 'Star Wars' on the title card.) So I have been a fan since practically the beginning. I love this movie better than the prequels - but that said, yes it IS just a rehash of New Hope and I'm okay with that. I love it for the SPECTACLE - it's just a really FUN, exciting movie to watch. Let's be real, most of these movies aren't well written - the dialogue in the prequels were HORRIBLE; but we as die-hard fans are not invested because we are looking to see Oscar-worthy Academy award winning masterpieces of film. This franchise was created for the WHOLE family to enjoy, so that means finding the balance between the complexities that would appeal to an adult audience AT THE SAME TIME as the type of sillyness that appeals to children. For all the people that judge me for loving this movie, I can equally judge you for your love of the trilogy that gave us Jar Jar and the politics of the intergalactic trade industry. But as fans, a lot of us are above that - we are ALL unified in the love for this franchise for our own reasons, and those reasons shouldn't matter; what matters is celebrating it together! Nat, I don't know if you're reading this, but I just wanted to throw some fact-checks your way on things I noticed you missed or misread: Rey's connection to the force I'm not going to spoil for you - it DOES come out in further movies. As for her being 'really lucky' as you put it - she's not; she has been scavenging parts off Imperial ships and tech since she was a little girl, that's how she knows her way around the mechanics of them. When they introduced her, she was scaling the inside of an old Star Destroyer from the original trilogy, and living inside a fallen AT-AT. That's all they gave us, but it was enough to paint the picture. When you said Kylo Ren should have been the one to find Han Solo in Starkiller Base and not the other way around; he DID - he lured his father out onto that bridge; he knew his father was there all along and counting on him to follow. It WAS predictable that Han would die, but to those of us who followed the franchise AS it unfolded, Harrison Ford went on the record publicly telling of how originally he was supposed to die in Return of the Jedi, but due to the character's popularity among the fans, they allowed him to live much to the actor's dismay. Towards the beginning you mentioned having seen all the films except this sequel trilogy; but you haven't watched the movie Solo yet (unless I'm missing something). And when you spoke of how Luke and Artoo were together in the Mandalorian and were confused about them being apart in this; although the sequel trilogy was shot and released before the Mandalorian, it takes place AFTER it in the timeline - the Mandalorian begins about 5 years after Return of the Jedi. And although the ORIGINAL Stormtroopers were clones in the first 6 movies, these First Order Stormtroopers were abducted and indoctrinated children from across the galaxy; both Finn and Hux spoke of it briefly throughout the movie. As for Finn wielding a lightsaber and going toe to toe with Kylo Ren and how to you, that seemed unlikely, there are two things to consider - one: Finn lost; also he's been trained since he was a kid with the one purpose of being a soldier. If YOU picked up a sword, you might not handle it well, but I'm sure you'd be able to hold your own for at least a little bit. And two: yes, Kylo was wounded, but aside from that he never finished his training; he wasn't as skilled with the force as he aspired to be. Ben Solo was misguided; he wore the helmet to emulate himself after Darth Vader who he IDOLIZED. Phasma wore her helmet the same as any of the other Stormtroopers as a RULE - it's part of the uniform and I guess you could say they are mandated to follow the dress code; remember Finn got in shit for removing his helmet at the beginning. So it's not just for intimidation. Try not to be influenced by Tyler's bias, pleeease. It's the very reason you avoid reading much of the comments. A LOT of people hated this movie for the lack of originality, so they tried to fix that in Episode 8 and hated THAT even more. Good or bad, I enjoy watching your reactions. If you personally dislike a movie, I enjoy WATCHING you dislike it; that's what we're all here for - to see your honest reactions. Just TRY to dislike it because you ACTUALLY dislike it and not because someone else who's opinions you trust disliked it.

Peter Yocum

holy shit she wasn't wrong in her anticipation of the comment section.

James M

Creators do indeed need to take breaks from Star Wars content because it's difficult and taxing to engage with the Fandom Menace constantly.

Ilsuk Yang

Yay, you correctly guessed that it was Brienne of Tarth! You were right on with Harrison Ford and Han dying (and yes, it was super obvious, as you said in the reaction). This movie is definitely a mixture of good and bad stuff, but, like you, i think the good outweighs the bad. The bad elements of this movie are pretty bad, though. Anyways, I enjoyed this reaction of yours (by the way, the stormtroopers aren't clones)! I know we have about another week of content before the two week hiatus (longer for you since you filmed a week ahead) so have a golden trip!

Keith Jacobsen

Yeah, it's a shame C3PO couldn't...Stay Golden?

sammi

If anyone needs a hand syncing the reaction to the movie on Disney+ you can use this: https://www.simulsync.live/ I used 419.8 as the offset and it synced up perfectly.

Byron

TFA is… “fine”. It is nice to see some fresh faces along with the old ones. I like the character of Rey, and I like the portrayal of Ren as a conflicted, confused, angry character. He’s a hot mess, and that’s a terrific portrayal of someone tumbling down the dark side. The visuals are stunning. The writing is lazy. It’s totally all right, and not at all worth arguing about. I was sufficiently whelmed.

JediLounger

As a longtime fan of Star Wars, I find the hysterical insanity that surrounds new Star Wars exhausting, so much so that I don’t even participate in discussions about the movies anymore. Most of the Star Wars movies have problems (story repetition, terrible scripts, bad acting, iffy special effects, etc. Take your pick). Not every movie fills in each category, but Empire Strikes Back is the only movie that gets close to earning the praise given to it, and paying the fans back with top tier content in the categories I listed off. Personally I love the majority of the films, and just roll with stuff I don’t like. None of it is worth getting mad or hating on the movie or the people who made it. And definitely not worth getting into an internet argument with someone I don’t know.

Natalie: "Kinda wish they blow up the Resistance, kinda want something new" oh girl careful what you wish for

Connor Ellis

The Clones were all based of Jango Fett so yeah Finn isn't a clone. When the Empire was formed they began phasing out clones pretty much straight away and chose to rely on volunteers, conscription and other methods.

Dominique Cloet

I’m done with this patreon. It’s obvious that you’re looking for stuff to dislike. Yes, the plot has similarities to episode IV. So fucking what! And about Rey’s skills. It’s a movie series about space wizards, get over it.

Ben Wheeler

I’ll take a moment of personal privilege, make a break in the argument, and request my all time favorite Harrison Ford movies (The Fugitive) be included in a poll

SuicuneSol

LMAO I love that you called out their BS right from the start.

Aaron Taft

Nice. I've been waiting for force awakened since I subscribed with ya in Empire Strikes Back.

Henri

Plug for the CinemaWins videos on this and the next two movies; both for Natalie and for anyone else who is disappointed with the sequel trilogy. It highlights the more positive elements, while acknowledging the flaws, and imo made the sequels a lot more enjoyable.

JayyDTR

I kinda guessed the comments would look like this. While the movie does have its flaws and isn't perfect by any means, there were certain things that seemed strange to bring up without some preconceived notions as to what the general public disliked about the movie. I don't doubt you came into this with no idea of the plot or what people didn't like, but it definitely felt like you were perhaps looking for the problems, rather than seeing where some of the threads lead with the sequels. Either way always enjoy the reactions and look forward to your thoughts on TLJ (I'm part of the minority that actually likes it).

Connor Ellis

Just to say The Mandalorian is only set 5 years after Episode 6, whereas this film is set 20+ years after.

Aaron L

You might like last Jedi for the reason others hate it.It’s so different.

Nic Benham

It just makes me sad the more I watch them. Especially with all the talent on and behind screen. Alas, Disney bought Star Wars from George under the pretence they would follow his story notes. Then they threw them in the trash and made it up as they went along. Thank the maker for Filoni.

Nathan Smith

This made me sad. You clearly didn’t go into this with an open mind and seem to be just catering to the most toxic of fans. Of course she can fight and understands ships. She’s a scavenger living alone on a desert planet. Luke destroyed an entire Death Star on his second day off Tatooine. Cmon

Edward Of DOOM

Watched this in the theater twice. Using my own money. Watched the second one free because someone else paid for it. Waited until someone bought it on Blu-Ray for the third one. If there was a fourth, I would have probably watched it on my phone. Without earbuds.

Curaitis

Yes, its just dumb and i dont mean Rey. Its just "dropping" Bombs down in Space (in Space!!) or Holdo who always belittle Poe because he is a white Male, playing prejudices against men or do you mean the great idea of destroying the Enemy Flagship by crashing into it in Hyperspace? Always asked myself why they didnt do that with the 2 Death Stars? Cause it never worked like that!! but it was necessary to show how "intelligent" Holdo´s plan was while all the time she never thought it would be a good idea to tell her plan to the others or do you mean the complete rape of Luke Skywalker and his Storyline or is it the butchered Storyline between Fin and Phasma? Yep, totally different but totally trash aswell! For f*ck sake dont see crap Movies as good Movies just because you think you must cause of a female lead. Even Boyega and Isaac admit the Movie is shit, let alone Mark Hamill or George Lucas. And dont get me startd what Johnson and Kennedy said about the old Cast and that she hated Star Wars for not having a female lead all the time and that it was time to change that so they through Anakins and Lukes Storyline overboard.

Nic Benham

Luke took one very small action at the very end of his second day off Tatooine. He pushed a button at the exact right moment because he had to destroy the death star as a rebel fighter. He only succeeded because of his connection to Obi-wan and the lessons he taught, if even for a brief time. This very small amount of time spent with a master of the force allowed for a simple message to be sent to Luke, all he had to do was focus. Then he blew up the Death Star, and then he went on to train with Yoda and begin his own teachings. Rey just used the force when she wanted to, in all the ways she wanted to. Just because she knew about it and needed to escape and fight. I don't think it's catering, simply her opinion.

Matthew Shaver

Yes the exact same story line as Ep IV. I think the studio did not want to take any risks at all.

I jus wanna say b4 watchin this with yall that The Force Awakens is my favorite Star Wars movie. I understand its reputation &the sequels as whole. TFA hit me at the perfect time in my 20s &I have loved it since. Saw it 6 times in the cinema& was consumed in TFA for yrs. Enjoy Nat🤘🏿💞 MTFBWY

SebastianTheCourtious

When Rey just knew the force out of the blue really pissed me off about this movie

LJ Mickey

The movie itself is ok. Nothing crazy but an enjoyable movie. Strong 3/5. But oh boy I have a lot to say about star wars, in general. Let me just say, I'm not the biggest star wars fan. I enjoy them but can't call myself a true fan. This may seem mean but I don't get why Star wars is a big thing. Movies are ok at best. Lazy writing, lazy acting and repetitive. For me the strength of star wars is the world that George Lucas created, all the different races and planets and the history for the empire and the republic. And the whole battle between dark side and the light side is very good. And lightsabres are cool. :) BUT there is one thing I despise in this franchise and it's the fact that the "true fans" are the most annoying, toxic bunch of whiners, I have ever seen, anywhere. No movie franchise has these kind of fans who will bully you into the oblivion if you dare to disagree with them. I remember when this movie came out. Swear to god, I remember hearing these online discussions that "storm troopers aren't supposed to be black" (not talking about the armor) or "Why disney has to go woke and make the lead character female". Obviously not all fans are like this and the new movies made billion dollars to disney and they are really popular. But the fact that there is a portion of fans who will make your online life miserable over an opinion for a movie, makes me dislike the whole franchise a little bit more. Anyway, glad that you had fun. Looking for the next one. :)

Julian Welton

I think if you don't compare it to the older movies Force Awakens isn't too bad and may be the best of the sequel trilogy but, yeah, that's not saying much. The copy paste nature and Rey being not only great at the force but also being an excellent swordsman ( a staff and a one handed sword are two very different weapons) was just too much for me. It's like where do you even go from there with her character after that? Anyway it only gets more disappointing from here, have fun!

George Baxter

I think its terrible that people tried to dissuade Nat from watching this movie. When Force Awakens came out people were so nostalgic and I thought the film was shallow and derivative. Now that they KNOW. where the trilogy goes they hate it whilst simultaneously wanting more nostalgic Star Wars. What I like about The MCU is it hasn't become sacred and the films are at their best when they mix and match comicbooks or hand them over to new creatives. Unlike Star Wars it isnt governed by so many rules. Yet...

Jenny Tolls

I know everyone has mixed feelings about the last trilogy and I know I certainly do but I gotta say the special effects were done very nicely. The movies are so beautiful and artistic.

Essero Eson

Episode VII: The Force Expositions.

Thomas Malley

Yeah the sequel trilogy really aren't the best. It's pretty derivative.

Robert C

Jesus these comments are a shit-show. There's nothing wrong with liking this movie. There's nothing wrong with not liking this movie. No, these films are not "objectively bad." No, not everybody who dislikes them is a sexist alt-right tool (though certainly some are). I forgot how much this trilogy brings out the assholes.

Jackson

I feel like I’m one of the only people who mainly gauges whether a movie is good or not based on how much fun I had while watching it. Obviously there are exceptions, but for the most part if I had fun watching the movie then for me it was a good movie

Tiger Chu

Wait until you get to the Hobbit trilogy. You'll love the comments for those moives

djKENTO

I will always defend Rey’s abilities and know-how in this film. It’s all there on the screen. She’s not lucky, she’s knowledgeable. She’s spent her whole life taking apart technology and knows how it works and what it is, because her survival depends on it. She can clearly fight, she’s been defending herself since she was a child. She is a survivor and when she’s able to do the same kinds of things as low level Jedi people flip out and go “why can she do that!?” But they never questioned Luke being able to focus and get the shot on the death star or his ability to fly what is essentially a fighter jet in formation with experienced pilots. The Force partially controls your actions. Obi-Wan said it himself. As for the fight at the end, and Rey’s ability to stand up to Kylo, totally okay with that too. Chewie blasted homie in the gut with a gun that has sent people flying through the air the whole movie. Kylo is lucky he’s standing much less able to fight off two uninjured people, one of whom is a trained soldier from birth and the other is a clearly powerful force wielder. I am also one of the people who thinks The Last Jedi is the best mainline Star Wars film since Empire. Soooo…

DeadStillEating

and the award for the longest two minutes in cinematic history goes to....

Logan Kerlee

lmao, just finished watching the reaction. Yup! This is why I'm subbed to you on here. Your reactions are both honest and accurate. You're definitely not a fan girl of the series. Good deal! hahaha, but yeah, your thoughts/feelings on the movie mirror my own for the most part. A fun but super unoriginal movie. I won't spoil the next films for ya. Hoping that you enjoy them though! :)

John

Yup, you got the problems with the film. It really was just a fan service remake. Some enjoyable scenes, but not much story to tie it all together. Later films address some of the questions/issues you mentioned. You mentioned how much exposition there was, but keep in mind this came out 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, so they're bringing in a new audience. It's also set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, so a lot of the history in the film has become almost mythological. It's kind of like the Apollo moon landings - everyone's heard of it, but it's been so long a lot of people doubt it actually happened. Rey, Finn, etc. have all heard the stories, but were they just stories? That was the point with Han telling them it's all true - to make it real for the characters. The trilogy has plenty of issues, but it can still be enjoyed. Just don't expect too much from Jar Jar Abrams.

Gwath Eledh

Just for the statistics. I love ep. VII. Yeah, they kinda remade part IV but the characters are knew and Star Wars was never unpredictable or even super innovative in the story department. (View of a 1996 born Millenial so feel free to bash me for that one)

LightsCameraJake

It really felt as if you sat there looking for all the issues due to all the backlash you saw as opposed to going in with an open mind, much like how you did with the last few seasons of Game of Thrones, just picking apart everything wrong that I didnt even think about until you pointed it out, which made me even feel bad for liking it in the first place xD. At least you are an honest reactor, a lot of folks try to force themselves to like something and you dont do that.

John

The first time I saw this, the fight between Kylo and Rey made me think something was afoot. The anger on Rey's face made it seem like she was seriously channeling the Dark Side and we know from RotJ that the Dark Side can tempt you and be easy to tap into with strong emotions. Then when she beat Kylo and the planet suddenly separated them, I had a strong feeling that the Force itself was at work here, almost positioning them for this fight and then stopping it for reasons we would learn later. This was just my fan theory after my first viewing of the film before the rest of the films had been released. I won't say if any of it turned out to be accurate or not.

Edward Of DOOM

A nice Palette cleanser after this would be "Free Guy". Think about it.

Kirk Andrew Uhl II

I knew exactly where this reaction was going as soon as I heard, "Tyler HATES these movies." hahah Entertaining reaction nonetheless

Mike Yocom

*sees "2 of 240" comments* Yeah, not even going to read through all that to see if what I want to say has already been said better by somebody else, especially given how heated discussions of this particular trilogy can get. Sorry if I just beat the dead horse some more. Each of the sequel trilogy movies has its special flaws, and I think you hit the nail on the head about this one. I walked out of the movie theater saying "that was a paint-by-numbers Stars Wars movie." I'm partially in agreement about Rey picking up the Force too easily WRT Jedi mind-tricking the guard as the telepathic techniques have always been shown to be more advanced than sensing things and even telekinesis, but she won the fight with Kylo through a combination of Chewie shooting him in retaliation for killing Han (with a weapon they'd taken pains to show sends people flying), that he was bleeding out from that wound, that Finn managed to wound him during their duel, that he was pulling his punches because he was trying to convince Rey to become his student (à la Vader and Luke in Empire), and Rey finally taking a moment to clear her head and focus — which seems in how it's always been portrayed (for better or for worse) to trump just about everything else where the Force is concerned.

Cameron Trail

Nat: "(Captain Phasma) voice sounds so familiar, I can't wait to find out who it is!" Me: Brienne of fucking Tarth

Brandon Zepf

Kylo Ren arrives, Nat: I wonder when Adam Driver will show up? I was laughing so hard at that

Myles Away

I enjoyed this movie enough the first time I saw it and was swept up in the return of Star Wars to give its faults a pass. But after seeing the two movies that followed I can't stand any of them. What a wasted opportunity. A mediocre ripoff followed by two piles of shit.

Anonymous

It's far from perfect. And I won't say anyone should or shouldn't like the Sequels based on my opinion. They def made a lot of errors as far as how they presented this movie. There were too many gaps left unexplained. (Even though I've read most of the Sequel era novels, there are still gaps.) The Sequels shortcomings (spoiler free) is lack of shared vision across the storytelling. The Last Jedi is next, and it's my favorite of the Sequels, and honestly tied with Empire as my favorite SW Movie. I really appreciated your insight and reactions because you've not lived with/in these worlds for the past 40 years. It helps me gauge what is me being a fan and either nit-picking or defending versus the "general public" consensus. I'm sure everyone above has already filled in any questions/confusion you had. But I'll throw my two cents. -Return of the Jedi takes place approximately 35 years before the events of this movie. And the events of Mandalorian take place approx 30 years before. (So roughly 5 years after Jedi.) -The blue lightsaber was lost on Cloud City when Vader cut off Luke's hand. I don't know if they have yet explained how Maz got it. -Stormtroopers are not clones. At least by the time of the Original Trilogy the clones had been mostly phased out for normal human enlistment/recruitment etc. The First Order Stormies are abducted as infants and essentially programed/brainwashed into their rolls as soliders. -Finn is able to fight with the lightsaber as long as he does because the FO Stormies were trained to fight against lightsabers, hence that baton weapon that can deflect a lightsaber. They will never be as skilled as a Jedi/Sith/Force user though. (This is from a novel, and there was a lot in that book that should have been somehow in the movie cause it sets up/explains soooo much.) -Kylo took a blaster shot from Chewie's bowcaster, which we see multiple times in this movie literally send the targets flying off their feet like rag dolls. Klyo takes it and barely drops to his knee. He is not anywhere near peak skill when fighting Finn or Rey. -Rey is a little more than lucky, at least as far as the tech stuff she does. (I'll admit, she takes to the Force a little too conveniently/quickly.) She spent much of her life scavenging off large Imperial ships. Many of those same technologies run in the First Order equipment. And as for piloting, she does mention flying a few ships in the movie, though it's during moments when she and Finn talk over each other. Also, in the book mentioning how Stormtroopers train to fight lightsabers, Rey is described as spending much of her free time running flight simulators in the AT-AT she lives in. Again, info that would have helped sell her skills in the movie. And as much as I enjoy the Sequels, they do have their problems. But so do the originals and the prequels in my opinon. But it's all Star Wars. And things like The Clone Wars made me really appreciate the Prequels a lot more, even though I initially ignore TCW. I feel Mando and Book of Boba Fett are doing similar things for the era between the Originals and Sequels. Your hilarious intros are fantastic! You don't need to apologize for them. Thanks for another great video!

Heliastein

The intro was just fine don't worry about it! You not planning to watch boba fett is fine just don't get into the next mandalorian season whenever it comes out before you watch boba fett :P

Chael

Personally, I enjoyed all of these films. I admit I’m no critic & I went into them all wanting to be pleased. Even so, if you don’t pay attention to people trying to convince you of all the various, & I’m sure valid, reasons to hate these films I think you’ll like them too.

Anonymous

I almost 100% agree with you here. Hot take on TLJ on ranking lol. . People are to hard on SW in general. Like parents putting too much pressure on a kid that's just doing their best lol.

REDR58

Well as far as I’m concerned it only gets a lot worse from here. I think the highlight of all of this was the Official Trailer 6 years ago. Great music and so much promise: https://youtu.be/sGbxmsDFVnE

Daniel Vezina

About Rey being a Marie Sue, it's not at all the fact that she pick all those force power so quickly that's the problem, it's everything else. She's can fly and knows the Millenium Falcon better then Solo, despite never had flown a real ship before. She understand binary and Shyriiwook without ever had meet a Wookie before. She's as good as Kylo in a lightsaber fight, first time she light 1 up. That's what make her a Marie Sue.

G. T. Blackwell

I forgave this movie a lot at first because, after the debacle of the prequel trilogy, they had to show they could make an actual "Star Wars" movie. But it's not good and these get progressively worse as they keep trying to course correct and fail miserably.

A.J. Workman

Just finished this. Man, really disappointed with this reaction. Don’t want to argue, just really tired of the negativity

NFXx

The problems you have with The Force Awakens are exactly what many other fans had as well. It is basically the same plot as A New Hope and Rey is a bit overpowered. Some of the same comments are comparing to when Luke used the force to help with destroying the deathstar. They’re kinda not the same thing. Obi Wan is guiding him to use the force so Luke trusts in the force. Rey is using Jedi abilities that she doesn’t know about and those abilities are taught. Obi Wan did train with Luke a bit and later on with Yoda. Also the fact that Luke is or part of being the chosen one, so it makes sense that he may seem pretty powerful in the later films. These people are forgetting or ignoring almost everything. But overall The Force Awakens is still a good and very fun film. The new characters are all great, the actors did a very good job. Cinematography and score is awesome. Also some of the people need to chill. Nat’s criticisms are valid. It’s ok if someone else doesn’t like it or does like it. She still enjoyed the film and seemed to still like it.

Curaitis

As long as you can stand a different oppinion as yours its fine. If you cant, than you shouldnt. I guess a lot of "open minded" People who pretend to be woke and tolerant are not as tolerant to a differnt oppinion as they pretend to be. The hate and intolerance here is stunning. Seems they only like Women when they have the same oppinion they have. Haha, the hypocrisy in here is so ridiculous.

I think the idea was to make a reboot without wiping clean the universe that was established. To bring in the new generation without alienating the old. Which is something JJ has plenty of experience with. Why he felt compelled to put the hopes of two massive franchises on his shoulders in a mystery to me. But in trying to please everyone he mildly entertained someone. This is the chronic issue with this trilogy. But if the choice was this or a try reboot, this all day. Tbh I'm just thrilled that the franchise is alive and these movi s are enjoyable. May the force be with us.

Anonymous

It is a complete copy of the original to a degree. However human beings & I assume most other life forms do seem to repeat the same awful bullshit over and over so…

Anonymous

I agree NFXx. Disney just spent $4B to buy the franchise and this was their first Star Wars movie. Should they play it safe and reuse the plot from A New Hope (but make the death star bigger) or take a creative risk with an entirely new story outline? With billions of dollars on the line, Disney executives decided to play it safe.

Anonymous

The Force Awakens was the top grossing movie of all time in the US. Most of the people like it but had the same issues that you mentioned. Lack of originality and Rey being too good with the force. It was a too safe reboot of the franchise.

Anonymous

Without getting into SPOILERS, the sequel movies are well made technically but it seemed that didn't have a whole story planned out. They all feel kind of disjointed between them. But I'm curious to see your take on them.

JokerDanny

Please react to the Gotham tv series, it ran for 5 seasons and it's about Bruce Wayne as a child before he became Batman, the show also creates their own origin stories for Batman's enemies like the Joker, Scarecrow, Bane etc. It was a fantastic show and if you loved the Dark Knight trilogy movies you'll love this show.

Kris Nimitz

Nataly welcome in the elite (haters) club, where some of as SW fans (not all ofcourse) was called by Lucasfilm racist and sexist because we have criticized the new movies. I'm glad you started to watch the sequels, so now we can talk about this. My hatred started when I saw the next one, I am really looking forward to watch your reaction. May the force be with you.

collegeguy6377

Nat don't listen to anyone and form your own opinions on these movies. There's somebody here above me that said the next movie started their hatred, but to me the next movie is the best in the whole of Star Wars, and that's coming from a lifelong fan. Form your own opinions and ignore the haters!

Michael Rockenfelder

Will never agree with people saying Rey is a "Mary Sue". Everything is explained or shown in the movie of why she's able to do these things. Her catching on to Force stuff quickly is the exact same reason Anakin was podracing at 9(or whatever age) and being able to fly a Naboo Starfighter having literally never been in a ship before. Or Luke using the Force to make a "1 in a million" shot because he heard Obi-Wan saying "use the force".

Anonymous

I actually enjoy this one. It didn't bother me that it was basically a new New Hope. The two movies after this are what really did this trilogy in. I don't understand the choices Rian Johnson made, and JJ clearly didn't know what to do with it when he returned.

collegeguy6377

Also, when you were confused about how she knows the force, she was inside of Kylo's mind who is also insanely strong with the force. She saw how to do those things inside of his head.

collegeguy6377

Another thing, Kylo punching himself is because the Sith get their power from their anger and their pain, so that's why he's punching himself

collegeguy6377

I see all of your complaints about originality and that was definitely a consensus upon this movie's release. The next movie is entirely different and original and it's why that one is my personal favorite. But keep in mind that a lot of people hated The Last Jedi because it was so original that people said it just wasn't Star Wars. It'll be interesting to see your thoughts on the next one!

Albiezushi

Loved your reaction Nat! That's all I'll say ;)

Curaitis

pls enlighten me, what is so original and different with the next movie? There are plenty of Reviews talking how shitty the Sequels are but im really interested why People like you think they are so original. Is the Characterwriting or development, the Storyarc. What is it. Maybe if someone would explain it i would understand better why people like the Sequels. All i can see is that she didnt liked the Movies as much as some wanted her to like it and now the Commentsection is full of hate and attacks against her and Tyler. Its a disgrace what happens here just because some dont like the Sequels.

Myles Away

One of the biggest mistakes of this film was not having Luke Skywalker show up to save the day. Rey should not have fought Kylo Ren so soon. It made the following fights between them feel less important. That lightsaber should have flown into Luke’s hand and we could avoided that terrible Luke on an island storyline.

My Toasty Toast

You think that storyline was terrible, I think it was great! It would have been really weird and cheesy if Luke literally just came out of nowhere on Starkiller base

Anonymous

When we needed George Lucas the most, he vanished!

My Toasty Toast

I know I’m a little late here, your reaction is more or less what I thought when I saw the movie. You said a couple interesting things that I want to give some fun facts for! Early on you said the cinematography of the movie embodied A New Hope. Not only were many of the shots were also composed and framed exactly like Episode 4, it actually used the same (slightly modified) camera technology and millimeter film that the original trilogy was shot on. Same with the creatures; the prequels used mostly cgi for all the aliens but this movie went back towards prosthetics and puppeteers for all the creatures in the movie. While the behind-the-scenes callbacks are cool, I agree that the narrative following the beats of the first story was disappointing. You mentioned that they were saying information that the audience already knows, however there was a reason behind the exposition. Episode 7 was meant to be a jumping on point for people who had never seen Star Wars, as the original films are a bit dated and the prequels, well, have all that hammy dialogue and Jar Jar Binks moments. They wanted people who had not seen Star Wars to be able to jump on this movie without needing to watch six other films as “homework.” I’m looking forward for your reaction to the Last Jedi. I really like that one, but even if you end up not liking it I’m super excited to hear your thoughts on the movie!

Travis

Tyler definitely ruined this movie for you with his negativity. Sure it recycles the plot but it’s still a lot of fun, genuinely funny in some parts and visually well done. This reminded me of when Tyler influenced you to be negative against GOT in like season 6 and you just went in to episodes ready to hate them. I’ve seen you have more fun with way cheesier movies than this. That’s all I’ll say.

Richard Ryan

Even though this one does retell the same story, and it's phenomenally unbelievable that the Falcon just happens to be on Jakku, not to mention the other incredibly wonderful coincidences; Force Awakens is ok. I have just one word for my feelings about the other two: "Misandry". :(

Fauxfox

That's on the film for being so divisive. It's really not that good and after so many years people have a lot to say about it.

Anonymous

I kinda feel like it’s unfair to be too harsh on this movie , lots of series follow a formula and have similarities from movie to movie , the fast series. Mission impossible , bond movies. Heaps , sure it’s similar to 4, but it was different enough in parts. Rey being too good at the force feels like preempted criticism , I’ve heard it a lot but Luke after half a day with obi in episode 4 flies blindfolded and fired a miracle shot yet Rey can’t be expected to use a light sabre with a moderate amount of skill after she is shown to be skilled with a staff. The only real OP was knowing how to use force suggestion , but she also clearly heard the myth of the Jedi and how that worked . We also saw anakjn in ep1 flying pod racers at 8 totally untrained but force sensitive and able so why all of a sudden does Rey have to be a total amateur for jt to be believable . At the end of the day it’s a space western . You seemed more ready to criticise this movie than any other I’ve seen , for being too predictable or explaining too much or for the sort of things almost every action movie is guilty of . I didn’t love this trilogy but this movie was easily the best of the 3 and to be honest Better then episode 2 comfortably in my opinion. Btw the light sabre was Luke’s from episode 5 that he lost when his hand was sliced off by Vader . Not the green one he had in episode 6. And mando set way earlier than this movie which I’m sure you by now have worked out anyway . Thanks for sharing the reaction , it’s a polarising movie but that’s because star wars fans are way too intense sometimes … the original movie never wanted to be taken too seriously , but try enjoy them all with that in mind

Joe Blankenship

I liked this movie a lot when it came out. It scratches a nice nostalgia itch if you grew up watching Star Wars. And I fell in love with Daisy Ridley. I wish her story had been handled better. If they wanted her to be using the force in the first movie, they should have presented her as like some sort of natural prodigy. Like, maybe she figured out how to use the force on her own but it's just not very consistent without training.

Jesse Wilson

This movie is trash, and its the best of the trilogy. This was such a painful watch. Im not sure i can handle watching the other two again lol. I dont know how anyone who is a fan of the original trilogy can accept these as anything other than a travesty. Fuckin JJ Abrams. ruined both trek and the wars.

Anonymous

obviously I like your reactions but some constructive criticism: you are missing a lot of plot points in all your reactions yet you critizing the script with to much exploration/explanation. you are annoyed when you are not surprised by the plot yet are missing huge plot points that may really surprise you.

Curaitis

And what exactly is she missing. Telling her that she is missing SO MUCH without explaining it is just fake accusations and of course if she wouldnt have missed it the Movie would be the best Hollywood ever made. This f**king fake wokeness is is so tiring.

Well, she read Kylo’s mind briefly, so she probably learned how to do the mind trick from that

Yasin

i'm calling it now: Nat's gonna like The Last Jedi and hate Rise of Skywalker.

WE NEED MORE SCREAMY PLANES! Or, more specifically, we need more of you being excited when seeing TIE fighters and exclaiming in child-like glee, "SCREAMY PLANES!" I will never be able to see a TIE fighter again without at least mentally shouting, 'SCREAMY PLANES!"

Have to admit that this was a painful reaction to watch. I know that you said you were going in without any prejudices, but it didn't feel that way and some of the well deserved derision that the trilogy deserves as a whole seems to have been applied to The Force Awakens - even though this is generally considred the best of the three and at the time of release left most people feeling optimistic about the next two films in the trilogy. Admittedly it was a carbon copy of the Episode IV, but this (very valid) critisism aside, it really felt like many of the negative things you had heard in passing about the trilogy were already there bubbling below the surface in your subconscious and that you were subsequently pointing them out through the film instead of just enjoying the movie. It's a shame because this was the 'good' one! It's the next two films that really divided the Star Wars fanbase. If you forgive the (too) close resembalance to the original film then i still think that The Force Awakens is still a decent film. Despite that, I am looking forward to seeing your reactions to the next two and seeing which side of the fence you land on. Oh, and screamy planes ftw :)

Long comment, sorry, but anywho: The First Order aren't an empire per say. They're a military junta made up of ex-Imperials that simply refuse to stop. They're the true believers that were the most zealot-like of members. They want to bring something like the Empire back. Which in real world history, this does happen. Endor saw the destruction of the Death Star II, the Executor, Vader, and Palpatine, but not the Imperial Fleet. And so they've kind grown unchecked because the New Republic did not want to go into a new war, and figured that the First Order which is largely in the Outer Rim wouldn't amount to much. Clearly they were wrong. What Starkiller Base destroyed in this movie is the Hosnian System, seat of the New Republic government at the time. Visually similar to destroying Alderaan, but with much bigger stakes. Like blowing up a nation's capital including all their leaders and congresspeople in one go. Consider it revenge for taking out Palpatine. So the New Republic has evaporated in a moment. Certain people within it like Leia were supporting the Resistance under the table. Now any support the Resistance may have unoffically had has gone. (The Resistance FYI being an independent group in the Outer Rim that takes the First Order seriously. Leia argued that the FO should be fought directly, but the New Republic shot her down.) So now the Galaxy is screwed. And whereas the Empire slowly installed itself and most people didn't notice the day to day changes, and even voted for them. This is more like the Galaxy being held hostage. Regarding Rey, occasionally she seems like she picks up things too quickly. But keep in mind she spent at least 10 years of her life without parents scavenging on Jakku, armed with a staff. And dialogue tells us Unkar Plutt had her working on starships like the Millennium Falcon, so she has mechanic and piloting skills honed over years before we even meet her. And fighting skills would just come from this lifestyle. That translates into being able to wield a lightsaber, which isn't something that you necessarily need to be a Jedi to command. Finn did it, and we also saw that one First Order trooper wield a similar melee weapon. So not impossible, though difficult. How did she defeat someone as powerful as Kylo Ren? Well he didn't want to kill her, but she was in a rage. He had a gut wound from Chewie. He was emotionally compromised from having just killed his father, thinking it would fix everything inside. It just made it worse. And also there's also Force-related reasons as to why the Force wants Rey to win. But that's for the next two movies. Regarding troopers, only the Clone Troopers from the Prequels are clones. By the time of the Empire, clones had been phased out in favor of recruits due to cost and propoganda. It's easier to rally the support of civilians if they believe the faceless troops are you and me. Also you only need expensive troops for a giant war like the Clone Wars. You don't need it for planetary security during the Empire. First Order troops meanwhile are regular people stolen from infancy and indoctrinated by the First Order in their philosophy in order to install absolute obedience and faith. This is also why they can shoot well. Better and much longer training. Regarding Kylo Ren, he is absolutely a Vader copycat, as he idolizes his grandfather. As far as he is concerned, Vader failed in a moment of weakness when Anakin re-emerged. And Ren is devoted to not having a moment of weakness. Regarding Luke and the Jedi. The Jedi were regarded as a myth by the time of the originals. And by this point 30 years after Return of the Jedi, they still kinda are. Luke is somewhat known, but only as a legend. Which is a plot point in the next one. Luke never quite got the Order to be big enough to be galaxy wide. Regarding The Mandalorian, that's set 5 years after Jedi. This movie is 30 years after Jedi. Some fun trivia: -The stormtrooper that frees Rey was played by Daniel Craig. James Bond. -Unkar Plutt is played by Simon Pegg. (Cornetto Trilogy.) -Kelvin Ridge is probably a reference to the Kelvin Timeline of Star Trek, which begun with the JJ Abrams film Star Trek (2009). He also directed this film. -General Hux is played by Domhnall Gleeson, Bill Weasley from Harry Potter. -Captain Phasma is Gwendoline Christie, Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones. -Snoke is played by Andy Serkis, Gollum. Anywho, interesting reaction. And I look forward to your reaction to the next two films.

Stefan Johannsson

Agreed. I didn't love the trilogy but absolutely loved the first one aka this movie. Nat's impression was already heavily influenced before even going in. Too bad cause this movie was nearly flawless frankly. The next two ruined it. Perception is reality unfortunately. And her perception of this movie was doomed from the beginning. It is what it is.

Your criticisms echo what others have said. Heavy criticism of Rey getting her power too soon, repeat of death star and random person on desert planet goes on quest. I think you will like Last Jedi more. It's... different. Also, PLEASE react to the Battlestar Galactica pilot/mini series, it's about 3 hours ish long and leads into the main series. Based on viewership, and your own opinions you can then decide how often to throw it in a poll for the 4 season length it has. Extremely well written, acted show. And thanks for throwing it into a poll a few months ago, I noticed 😁

I really thank you for your reaction that is so critical for this fan favourite piece, couse peopele had no objective critic to this one but hated Last Jedi couse it wasn't what fans wanted to be but loved FA couse it was just like fans wanted. It brings me hope that you will like Last Jedi because like FA is just the same, LJ is diffrent from the rest movies:D Sorry for my all wrongings in grammar im not native speaker of engilsh and have little time to write it down and after big party :), if there is option for editing i'll try corect it. Yes 1s and 3rd of new trillogy is lazy writing 2nd is great writing but well "FANS" wanted to somethings like FA or the 3rd one :)

loved your intro and the jump scare too fun

Thomas Richter

Thanks for this, I hate it!

I liked this movie somewhat when I watched it. Even though I found it unoriginal and a carbon copy of Episode IV.

Misty Crom

I genuinely misheard your apologising for rustling noises as 'I apologise for any Wrestling noises that I make'. I'm not entirely sure I'm glad you held the bar up to show what you were referring to or not. Going into this anticipating wrestling noises would've been funny. Ok, you jumping at the theme starting better be in the YouTube video! that was so funny! A few other fun cast stuff: the junk dealer on Jaku was played by Simon Pegg, and the storm trooper releases Rey is Daniel Craig. Also, along with Andy Serkis as Snoke, Maz was Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia from Black Panther), Overall, I will say, I always liked this film. On rewatching again now (maybe 3rd or 4th time) I do see the 'it's basically a remake of New Hope' point more... I kinda get it in a number of ways... the cyclical nature, which is a big thing in the films anyways, plus I guess figuring the fans'd like it being such... I definitely didn't see Han being killed coming when I saw it at the cinema though... and i still really like it. The few things that, to me, make Rey figuring stuff out so quickly (or seeming to) makes sooome sense. She knew about jedi and the force. she grew up with stories and legends of Luke and Han, and so as soon as she was told 'you have the force in you', she knew what it meant. She'd heard what Luke did. And I guess with the mind thing, she'd felt how Kylo did it to her, and so just did the same thing... trying how he did it, then trying the calm mind, which worked. And fighting against Ren... I think they figured people'd figure the 'he's very badly injured'. He did get shot by Chewie's bowcaster, which just kills most in one shot. But the playing him as fighting through it more, and the black robes really didn't help that. I think there is a thing with the hitting around the wound thing. an adrenaline thing maybe. Though maybe also to do with the self conflict, keeping himself angry since the dark side is fuelled by hate. I wonder if it was intended as he was using a lot of his power to keep himself up and fighting at-all? But any which way, if people don't like it... .fair enough. people do? also fair. World'd be a boring place if we all liked the same things.

It's a great toy commercial. movie? ...not so much. but that's ok.

And at the same time they gave us fans of the original trilogy all the nostalgia hits (to an almost diabetic level, but I loved every minute of it). I agree with your sentiments. I was rather disappointed that a lot of fans felt that they were alienated by this trilogy to the point that there was a concerted campaign to make the movies fail by any means.

This is a wild claim and assumption about why people didn't like a movie. The 2nd movie was not great writing, neither was the 1st or the 3rd. I'm all for liking what movies do well.. TLJ is amazing visually, and DOES have a lot of really cool stuff in it.. but the plot is not good and a bunch of poor choices were made... characters were wasted.. Nat is probably going to pick TLJ apart. Absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying this movie though! I find some movies other people think of as bad (they usually are lol) quite entertaining!

Anonymous

One of the things I never understood is why people hate the final lightsaber scene.. people saying Finn shouldn't have been able to fight that long and Rey shouldn't be able to win. Lets first start.. Kylo was shot with the bowcaster right? All film long we see people get launched 20ft back after being hit by it.. He took a shot from that thing and was still fighting.. He is clearly NOWHERE near 100% lol , Kylo was literally trolling Finn.. Finn stood 0 chance, as evident in Kylo

Anonymous

ahhh i didnt mean to hit enter. So Kylo literally was in control the entire fight vs Finn.. its very obvious.. the moment Finn kind of surprises him he ends the fight. And vs. Rey, he's not trying to beat her / kill her.. he's trying to recruit her.. She catches him off guard with his injury and thats how she was able to 'win'

I love the originals, the prequels, all of the add on movies, the shows, and I love the sequels too! Each set has some happy memories associated with them because I chose to enjoy with my family, my kids, my loved ones. That’s all that matters in my opinion. It’s all meant to be enjoyed ❤️ And we enjoy you!!! Thank you Natalie!

So. As more of Star Trek fan, JJ got me to watch this in theaters. I can see that watching the rest of them recently could be annoying. BUT. Those of us that hadnt seen those movies since a child, this was a fun movie.

Even I, a forty year SW veteran can't get SCREAMY PLANES out my mind anymore.

This movie ruined my childhood love of Star Wars

Michael Cruse

For me, this movie felt like an adequate storyteller getting to play with the coolest toys in the universe. So, I had fun watching it. Wasn't what I wanted, but I was okay with retelling the original story because it was so damn awesome to get to see the Millennium Falcon and R2-D2 and Leia and all of it on the big screen again. And the music, oh that music. And yeah, I liked Rey and Finn and Poe and BB-8. So now that we've established a new generation of characters with all the cool toys, the trilogy will proceed in new, creative direction that everyone will love, right? Right?

Anonymous

Ohhh no are you gonna be okay? Get over yourself. You fan boys are the most dramatic group of people on planet earth.

Couldn't finish this, the new trilogy is just sooo baaaad. J.J. Abrams, Brian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy ruined this entire trilogy.

Troy B.

Ohhh-kay... I thought I could read the comments after such a long hiatus from this whole argument, but after a few dozen I'm done. We're already arguing about the future installments that she hasn't even watched yet. Hopefully she's not reading these comments, though luckily I haven't seen anything spoilery, just tonally influencing. And I had a feeling that one side would feel one way about her reaction and one would feel the other. I'll be curious to see where she falls with TLJ and RoS, but I think we've all gone round in circles about where we stand on these, and I've yet to see any minds changed on that front. Also, I feel like the only "fair" counter-arguments to Nat's reactions are best from people who haven't seen this trilogy and saw it for the first time alongside her; knowing what's to come, or even having seen it before this watchalong, you (general you) have a lot more insight and perspective than she would have had. Anyway, if you make the unwise decision to read these, Natalie, hopefully you've embraced the knowledge that there's no way you get out of this trilogy with everyone being happy with your reactions. People care too much about their stance on this, clearly. FWIW, it's nice to see the reaction of someone who knew next to nothing about Star Wars just a few years ago. Because when one has held onto these stories for 20, 30, 40 years, it's hard not to have A Certain Point Of View™.

Jon Camp

For me, I liked TFA well enough. TLJ I felt "meh" at the end. Didn't hate it, but was just "meh." ROS was better than TLJ. I wasn't "meh" at the end, at least. Didn't find it to be a good movie, really, but at least felt better than "meh" when I left the theater. I still like Star Wars overall and continue to enjoy the franchise, though I'll admit to being a bit disappointed with Book of Boba Fett. Still... my favorite music group.. I don't like everything they put out either, but I enjoy them enough that I buy their albums on release day. But any given album typically has 1 or 2 tunes on it that I remove from the playlist... Why would I care that one of my favorite story franchises occasionally tells stories that I don't really like either?

Wow, if you hated this one you're really gonna hate the other 2. This was the good one. That said, I can totally see you being one of those weirdo's who likes TLJ.

Maz had Luke's lightsaber because he left it with Leia and she then entrusted it to Maz to keep safe because Leia was constantly moving. Also, everyone was asking about the girl because they felt the "awakening" in the force and Snoke and Ren both sensed that it was the girl.

Anonymous

Luke vanished after Ben solo left and joined the dark side and did not take r2 with him. this movie takes place 20-25 years after the downfall of the empire and the mandalorian takes place within a year of the empire's collapse.

Anonymous

In defense of Rey's power, the story of Luke has been spread across the galaxy as him being so powerful that he could only be a myth so the stories of mind tricks and moving objects and reading minds has been spread to every planet and every city and town. She's taking those stories she's heard and just testing them to her best ability.

Nat - Why isn't Han with Leia? Is Kylo Ren Leia's son ? Why did Han and Leia split? I need to know! Han and Leia - *answering every one of those questions in a 3-minute back and forth* Nat - Oh c'mon already...I don't need to know this! lawls

Jundae

I will stand by the fact that I love the new characters that came from the sequel trilogy, BUT the story wasn't that good. I personally feel they should just take the new characters, (Rey, Poe, Finn, Kylo, etc.) and hand them to Dave Filoni and let him make a great story with all of them.

Anonymous

She's powerful already because of something we'll find out in the other two movies. Don't hate on that part lol.

Jay Robert

Watching this now. I LOVE your cynical take on it and the fact that you recognize that Rey was irrationally adept at using the force so early!

Nat trying to figure out who Phasma is played by: "Now which of the many actresses who are over 6 feet tall and have British accents could it be?"
