Hi guys!

I've heard from a few of you that Firefly is best to view in the chronological order. Can y'all help me and confirm that this below order is correct? Starting with Serenity and ending with Objects in Space? Thanks for the help and can't wait to start this new series with you all!

"Serenity", "The Train Job", "Bushwhacked", "Shindig", "Safe", "Our Mrs. Reynolds", "Jaynestown", "Out of Gas", "Ariel", "War Stories", "Trash", "The Message", "Heart of Gold", and "Objects in Space"

Serenity takes place after the show

I literally squealed I can’t wait for you to experience Firefly 🥰🥰

just make sure "serenity" is the first episode and not the movie. same name. movie comes after the show. SO STOKED for this.

Oouga

Depends on if you mean Serenity the episode or the movie. Start with the episode. The movie happens after the series Other than that, chronological order.

Anonymous

Yep, this is it. The same running order as on the dvds is the right way to do it.

Anonymous

There is a movie after the series, Serenity (2005) which happens after the last episode. This is different than the TV episode of the same name. Plan to finish with the movie.

Ron K

Same thing a lot of the other comments are saying, as long as the movie Serenity is last, you're good.

Flick Freaks

Oh yeah. I keep forgetting that.

Will

Yes! Serenity the episode, not the movie! I know everybody else has said it, but it really can't be said enough. 🤣 The episode not the movie. Don't watch the end of the story before the beginning!

Flick Freaks

I’m so used to going off the order that came in the DVD boxset

You will be SO upset Fox let this show end after just one season (where they messed with the order and time slot enough to kill it)

Anonymous

This is correct in terms of TV episodes yes, and I can confirm some peoples' confusion over "Serenity" as it is a name shared by both the GENUINE (two-part) Pilot episode, and by the follow-up film. So, in a rather Zen-like coincidence, your wonderful journey through the magical browncoated Firefly universe will both begin and end in a state of utter Serenity 😊 (It would be nice if you could confirm, Natalie, whether you intend to follow-up watching the 14 episodes of the TV series by watching the 2005 "Serenity" movie. You really should, it pulls together and ties up all loose ends from the curtailed TV run - DAMN YOU FOX! 😒 - as well as making all us dedicated browncoats* shed a tear fro what might have been... 😢 ) * Browncoats = the chosen name for all die-hard Firefly fans. You'll soon work out why.

Funny how when the series aired, the pilot episode "Serenity" aired last. The network executives couldn't wrap their heads around the show and had Joss Whedon write scenes for "The Train Job" to make it feel like a pilot episode. Definitely start with the "Serenity" pilot.

Robert Kelly

Serenity the episode not the movie. The movie is last but you probably already knew that. Fox did do it out of order.

Patrick Egan

Yes, they should be viewed in the order they exist on the blurays and as listed on the Wikipedia page for the series(I'm guessing that whatever streaming service currently has the show uses the same order). After watching the series, then I HIGHLY recommend watching the "Serenity" theatrical film(yes, it has the same name as the pilot episode of the series).

Gary Poussard

Also fox thought Train job had more action in it and would draw more viewers into the series.

Andy Jordan

What they said.

Yes, just as long as you know that "Serenity " the episode is the premier, and "Serenity " the movie is basically the finale. Ive seen people watch the movie first and they were very confused. Haha

Sam Kimpton

"Serenity" was the original 2-hour pilot, but after it was submitted to Fox, they asked for another episode with "more action". So Joss Whedon and Tim Minear wrote "The Train Job" over a weekend, and that became the new pilot as far as Fox was concerned. That is why, if you watch the "Serenity" pilot first, you will see a sort of "reintroduction" of the characters in "The Train Job". But it's not too jarring. You should definitely watch the episode "Serenity" first.

Serenity the movie is a must watch whence you complete the series in the order list above. I look forward to revisiting this series again, but in a new way while enjoying the reactions and comments from the golden gang.

Grigsy

This is considered the proper order per Joss and other writers/producers/fans.

John

You have the correct episode list, starting with the Pilot episode, Serenity. The MOVIE "Serenity" is essentially what would have been Season 2.

Saf

I voted No because I was confused. I forgot that "Serenity" is also the name of the pilot episode

DougRaw

Music to my ears

Ronny Boss

You have the correct order gurl, and the movie comes last

JediLounger

Let’s do it. I am prepared, browncoats ahoy!

Alexa Chipman

Yes, just don’t accidentally watch Serenity the movie first, that comes chronologically last.

Gabriel Lozano, WLC

I agree. "Serenity" takes place after the series, so watch it last; otherwise there'll be some huge spoilers!

Misty Crom

I even used the booklet in the DVD box to compare, and yep, that is the order.

Misty Crom

And then the movie Serenity if you'd so wish, since there're fairly few episodes of the show. Be nice doing the full episode watchalong with this, been a while since I watched Firefly.

Bummer that Buffy can’t get more votes as I think you’d probably enjoy it the most out of your current selections. Firefly isn’t a bad substitute tho.

Garrick Smalley

Serenity is a part 1 & 2. Not the movie Serenity. Also if you have the physical DVDs there are a couple of easter eggs worth finding... as long as you like the show.

Gath Bard

Mildly convoluted answer: Serenity (the episode - 2002) was intended as pilot/prequel. It's longer, but still part of the original series. Not to be confused with Serenity (the movie - 2005) which gave the series its conclusion and it's a sequel to the series. Be sure to double check the "Serenity" you're gonna watch first.

I'm not too worried she will want to watch the movie after watching through the series. If she didn't, she wouldn't be the Natalie Gold that we love.

MotoDork

OMG who in the world thinks this is a good idea?? The ONLY way to watch any show or series of movies is release order. EVER.

Anonymous

The Clone Wars is better in chronological order. The Clone troop episodes make a lot more sense that way, as do some with the bounty hunter. That's how I watched it and I'm glad I did.

RebRox65

Hi, please , please watch the movie Serenity when you have watched the series, it’s one hell of a ride,

Shadowcat

I know you wrote this a week ago, but I had to say this anyway. I think it depends on what you mean by release order. Firefly was shot with episodes in a particular order, but Fox decided to play them out of order for who knows what reason. It's just one of the reasons why the show failed to find a footing. They did it to another show called Keen Eddie, which they also canceled mid first season. So normally, I agree with release order when you're talking about something like Star Wars, but if you're talking about something that got fucked over by the network, you go with the order they were *supposed* to be released. Writers try to do character development for a reason. It usually makes for a better story. (Edited for typos and cuz I hit enter too early.)

Bob Criswell

If she falls in love with Firefly like I hope, she'll really want to watch the Serenity movie. Even if it's only to see the characters one more time.
