Hello! Celebrate Presidents Day this year with the President of All RPGs (or something like that): Final Fantasy VI. This continues our Final Fantasy deep-dive series featuring Chris Kohler and Kat Bailey, and it is a lovely piece of conversation about a game we all love very much. I have a feeling the Final Fantasy episodes to come after this one will find us, um, much less in sync with our opinions. But for now, enjoy our unity as we reminisce about a great RPG.

Description: Jeremy, Bob, Chris, and Kat convene once again to discuss Squaresoft's fan-favorite, operatic, apocalyptic RPG masterpiece Final Fantasy VI.

I was sitting at work wondering what I was going to listen to and then I saw the email from Patreon in my inbox! Super excited to listen to you guys dig into this game. Final Fantasy VI is easy my favorite from the series and is probably my favorite JRPG up to this date. Its overall story was simple, but the tone it strikes and the overall message of maintaining hope even against all odds makes it very uplifting to play. I love the characters, the music, the visuals; it's the quintessential SNES game for me. i=

Hooray! Episodes like these are why I'm proud to be a supporter of Retronauts. Good people discussing a great game of yore. Also, having recently replayed the opera scene on the SNES Mini, I can attest to the sequence absolutely holding up. Uematsu's music at its peak and the perfect mix of 16 bit solemnity and silliness (long live Ultros!) makes it all stand out.

Still listening to the episode (so forgive me if this gets covered later), but I did want to chime in about the so-called Vanish/X-Zone bug. Vanish makes all physical attacks miss and all magic attacks hit. The bug is that this check bypasses immunities entirely, so death spells work on everything. It's not limited to X-Zone or even just death spells like Doom, you can also do weird stuff like cast Life 2 on your own Vanished characters to heal them fully.

I was lucky enough to meet Chris Kohler at TGS this year and he mentioned this would be the big one! Super cool!

Oh, so exciting! I've been adoring your long episodes on each of the Final Fantasy games. I'm playing through this (for the first time) on my Super NES mini with my wife. On a weird whim I went to go look at the release dates of Final Fantasy and next year you'll be able to cover FFXIII the first game (unfortunately) my wife and I played together.

The first Retronauts podcast I listened to in its entirety on the day it was released. I can't wait for the companion listener mail episode! Please do one if you haven't already!

Cancelling my pledge. Bob Mackey being a child, and his constant creepy stalking of Colin Moriarty, whether you agree Colin's views, or not, is pathetic, and weird. I won't be subscribed or listen to any podcasts associated with Bob . Removing my pledge from LaserTime as well. Your a twisted weirdo Mackey.

Great episode! Only thing I'd add is an appreciation of Locke and Rachel's story. It's not as memorable as some of the other FFVI key moments but it was bittersweet and thoughtful. Forever Rachel is a beautiful composition too.

Great episode! I would have liked to have heard a bit more about the game’s wonderful visuals. It presented a bold step up from FF5, and in my view, 6 still has some of the best art direction of the entire series. The world was darker and moodier than your typical JRPG setting. Beyond Amano’s illustrations and character art, the sprite work is fantastic and the color choices in the world are very tasteful and deliberate. Just look at that Narshe mining town in the introduction. All blue roof tiles, umber walls and gray cliffs. The backgrounds throughout are wonderfully mysterious, like the haunted forests and the vast plains. It’s a beautifully realized world and Nomura’s obnoxious character designs wasn’t allowed to run rampant yet. This is Square at its finest.

Another great episode. It really does justice to one of the all-time greats.
