"This obsidian armored figure radiates malevolent intent as it advances. It clutches an impressive blade in one arm, which it rests on its shoulders. Spikes cover the entirety of the figure, and tendrils of black and blue mist radiate from its form. An emaciated body moans as it struggles against the chains that bind it to this creature’s large shield."

Designer Notes:

Today we’re diving into a creature from Rotgrind’s extraplanar realms.

As we first discussed in the Campaign Primer, the cosmology for Rotgrind is a bit different than most campaign worlds. The plane of the Fundamental Battlefield is where the forces of the Fundamentals (the embodiments of Chaos, Evil, Good, and Law) eternally battle one another in a metaphysical representation of the struggle for supremacy. Most of the time, these beings keep their conflict contained to their realm, but sometimes they slip onto the Material Plane.

The first entry in our Fundamental bestiary is the tarumant malicite. The malicites are embodiments of the Malice, which is evil itself personified as a metaphysical concept. The tarumants are hunters who act as hunters in the Fundamentals’ war, chasing down targets with brutal efficiency. When summoned to the Material Plane, these malicites do much the same, though they relish in capturing the souls of their most hated foes. The souls of those slain by the tarumant become emaciated husks begging for death at the forefront of their immense shields.

Lovely right?

Today’s PDF also gives a bit of a taster for other malicites that exist, and that could possibly appear (alongside the tarumant) in future episodes of Rotgrind.

Ah yes first one of our planar fundamentalist! Wait... Well joke aside, I am kinda curious if fiends and celestials exist in this system in some other form like as "just regular monsters" or if different cosmology has completely replaced them? :O Either way, I do like this creature's balance. Its super tanky but crappy reflex and moderate attack with really high damage. It is really deadly but doesn't feel too unfair at glance, though it can still be really dangerous as a boss.
