1st Video on New Find; Reminder of Weekend Activities (Patreon)
Content
I don't normally post on here about videos that I share on the Youtube channel (because I assume you wouldn't be here if you didn't subscribe to the channel anyway), but I'm curious: Is a basic "index video" like what I posted today about the new runic find useful or interesting to you? I have no groundbreaking insights to share just yet, but I wanted to establish what basic facts I knew at this early date and help orient both very familiar and very unfamiliar people to how this discovery might impact our understanding of the field. I thought it was worth doing fast because once this gets wide play in English-language media the story is going to get badly distorted. So is this a type of video you'd like to see again next time there's a discovery like this?
Speaking of, I've been talking to Krister Vasshus at the University of Bergen, who produced probably the best English-language Twitter thread on this find, about coming on Zoom to have an interview with us about it. He's worked quite a bit with these inscriptions in person, so hopefully he can answer a lot of our questions and maybe even share some details not available yet elsewhere. I'm trying to get him on as soon as possible, so keep an eye out for an announcement--if I can schedule that as soon as this weekend, I'll do it.
Meanwhile, we already have our first Beowulf reading with Simon Roper this weekend (details here, Zoom link here), and next weekend we have January office hours.
I hope everyone is well, and thank you as always for your kindness and continued support. All the best for now,
Jackson Crawford
P.S. My Patreon messages don't work. I don't get notifications for them, and there's nothing on my home page to show me when there is or isn't a message. I can't even always see them when I check for them manually, and you won't see it if I reply! The best ways to get in touch are: a) just to comment on posts like this, b) to post in the Community page, or c) to email my assistant Stella at [admin AT JacksonWCrawford.com]--remember the 'W' between my first and last names in that domain name.
