Here's another video from a few years ago with a subject that I think interests more people than realize they'd be interested by it. Old Norse changed like any other language, and certain spellings, word choices, and grammatical forms can be telltale signs that a text is from pretty early (say the 800s A.D.) or pretty late (say the 1300s). This video reviews what several of those telltale signs are, summing it up in what I hope is a useful way for those of you who might, for example, want to follow along with the commentary on the detailed Old Norse readings of different eddic poems.

I hope all are well and happy this Veterans' Day. With my thanks to the veterans out there for your service, and to all of you for your kindness and support, I'm wishing you all the best as always.

Earlier and Later Old Norse

Like any language, Old Norse did not remain the same over time. This video looks at some of the notable changes that occurred between our earliest texts and the "classical" Old Norse usually taught in classes and textbooks. I just watched this one the other day! I’ve been watching YouTube as much as my weak internet will allow since I am on “light duty” so to speak (not quite bed rest) these last 6 weeks of pregnancy because I’ve had so many complications in the past. I’ve also started watching all the sagas again in hopes they will become more ingrained rather than in one ear and out the other.

This is a very difficult concept to grasp and the fact that I am 64 years old and my memory has definitely changed, but more often than not I am still able to follow along and yet for some reason I have a hard time getting the data variations here… Do you have any suggestions Doc? (I always really just wanna call you Cowboy because you are!)
