I approvingly mentioned hurstwic.org in my video about Norse Daily Life, referencing that site's excellently curated and carefully sourced information about Norse material culture (and especially clothing, armor, and weapons). To my surprise, its manager, William R. Short, reached out to me shortly afterwards. I thought you all might like an opportunity to ask questions of someone who has made a career of studying Viking fighting tactics, so we arranged a Crowdcast interview for a time that worked for him and me both and hopefully will work for you. This will be Wednesday, February 12th, at 1:00 p.m. my time (US Mountain time). Check the Crowdcast link above for your local time.

To quote from his personal website, hurstwic.org is "an organization that researches, practices, teaches, and demonstrates the fighting moves of Viking-age warriors."

Dr.  Short tells me in a recent email, "we are ... a research-based  organization that is interested in all things Vikings. We use the  scientific approach, and layers of many sources to learn more about all  aspects of Viking life, history, and culture. We are proud of the  integrity of our research and of our organization.

"As an  example, we realized that while iron-making in Viking-age Scandinavia  was well understood, iron-making in Viking-age Iceland was a mystery,  with secrets that have been lost. We gathered an international team of  experts, did testing and analyses, and developed some ideas. We tested  them in a public festival held at Eiríksstaðir in Iceland last fall  where we made what is probably the first bloomery iron in 700 years  using Icelandic materials and methods, confirming our hypotheses.  Publications are forthcoming. More information about the festival is  here:
http://www.hurstwic.com/iron "

As usual, if you can't make the scheduled Crowdcast time, I will post it on Youtube afterwards. I'm also happy to pass on questions from Patreon supporters who can't be there; feel free to share such questions with me directly through Patreon message.

All the best and thank you as always for your support,

Jackson Crawford

Can’t attend. Can’t private message. Assume bloom and bog iron are synonymous. If anyone thinks to ask, curious to know how pure bog iron final products were in Iceland and, if impure enough, whether the composition can be used to place origin of Viking-age artifacts (e.g., ship nails) rather than assume by place of discovery (mass spec?).

I suspect Dr. Crawford may see this, but I'll go ahead and forward it to him in an email just in case-- if you do have further issues with direct messaging in the future, you're more than welcome to send Crowdcast questions there as well. In case it helps (since I'm not sure what the private messaging issue is exactly), hitting the "Send a Message" button on this page should bring up a screen already addressed to Dr. Crawford (at least on desktop) https://www.patreon.com/norsebysw/membership , or the Patreon support page might have some helpful info: https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002832026-Send-a-message-to-a-creator

Thanks, Stella. I appreciate it. My issue is likely the phone app. Loathe the computer because people find me before I can hide electronically.
