You are correct that doubling up would still leave you with the same quandary, but I selfishly support you doing it anyway. ;)

Doubling up is definitely advised. Also, the earth flashbacks are always directly related to the premise of that episode, it's just character exposition. In this episode she rejects being a part of a group or team in all stages of her life, but when Chidi says that they are a team, she doesn't reject him and wants to continue to belong to that team. Her character is developing and changing... after she is dead. Its a much quicker way of doing it rather than spending a whole episode or season on Eleanor on earth to understand her motivations or progression.
