I walked down the steps and went directly into the kitchen. My younger sister took one look at me while sniffing the air and shook her head.

“No, not me,” she said.

I went into the dining room where my Aunt Madison was putting the finishing touches on setting the table. She didn’t even have to look at me to know that I was there and to know what I wanted. “Absolutely not,” she said, not taking her eyes off of the napkins she was folding.

I wandered through the living room, not even stopping to look at my cousins Beatrice and Adam as they watched TV. I could hear them giggling and whispering to each other behind me, but I did my best to ignore it.

Next I went into the basement where I found my older sister wrapping the last of her gifts. She paused long enough to look up at me and roll her eyes while sighing. “Are you serious?”

I nodded and was about to further explain myself, but she stopped me. “Go upstairs and see Mom.”

Defeated, I knew what I had to do. I went back up the first floor and then back up the steps to the second floor, avoiding the judging eyes of my younger sister along the way. I knocked on her open bedroom door and she waved me in as she was putting away some linens. Much like my aunt, she didn’t even have to make eye contact to know what it was I needed from her.

“You made a big mess in that diaper, didn’t you?”

I nodded bashfully.

“See, this is why I have to keep you in diapers? I know it's embarrassing to be 19 and still wearing them, but I can’t have you going around soiling your underpants in front of the family while they visit for the holidays.”

I sighed, feeling my cheeks warm.

“Come here, let’s get you changed. It looks like it’ll be at least another month of these for you.”
