I think I enjoyed this one more than the last. "Eat and drink the pain away!" I think that's the bleakest thing I've ever heard you say Josh. 🤣 I did appreciate the well timed pathos in this episode. As intrenched in British culture as you've become Josh. We've still a way to go when you don't know what Toad in the Hole is. 😋 I'm havin that for me tea on Sunday now!

You're right about Cheryl's fat suit. Jessica Hynes (who plays her) lost weight since the original series so she's worn padding since The Queen of Sheba.

Keith Pratt

Her weight loss between series 1 and 2 of Spaced is very noticeable.

To answer a question asked in the reaction. Toad in the hole is a Yorkshire pudding with sausages in the middle.

Toad in the hole is sausages in a Yorkshire pudding, I usually have it with a bit of mash potatoes peas and onion gravy, but Dave and Denise just had the hole, so they just had a Yorkshire pudding

Watching Royle Family all the way through has been a revelation. I didn't have any interest in it, then I watched the first episode and it grew on me and got better and better until The Queen of Sheba special. Having said that the special after that was only ok, and the last special was outright bad. Some really cringily stupid behaviour from characters who are normally nuanced and complicated. Haven't watched this one yet so I'm hoping it's better...but people haven't been kind about these specials in the comments, so 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately the next one is the last one because the actress Caroline Aherne become very ill with cancer and later died in 2016

Kieran B

And the creator and writer of it, alongside Craig Cash (Dave for Josh’s reference)

i miss 3dTV, only poor people said its a gimmick, thats why i still love using my projector that has 3D mode , its only a gimmick if u dont use it ,plus games look awesome in 3d ,especially old gamecube games that work flawless in 3d

This is definitely better than the previous special, it felt like a long episode (probably because it was all set in the Royle household again). Joe made me laugh this episode more than he usually does. “My wife Mary, she’s dead at the moment.” 😂😂

The specials are the specials, take them or leave them in my opinion. They brought the show back because of fan demand so I do think they struggled to find stories to tell with the family after the Queen of Sheba because that I truly believe that that's were they wanted to end the Royle's story, also you have to take into account that these last three specials were written just when on demand tv was becoming a thing so they were competing with a lot more, and then Caroline was silently battling cancer during all of this aswell. I will say though that the next special does have a really nice ending to tie the bow on the end of the show.

Barbara didn’t quite get what she wanted, she wanted to go abroad to another country but instead they went to Wales

The Queen of Sheba was a masterpiece, The New Sofa was just passable, The Golden Eggcup last week was very poor IMHO, and this one? A touch better. It's as good as The New Sofa and an improvement on last week's. I think the fact that it takes place in the Royles' living room / diner helps, Cheryl, Joe and Anthony being around also helps, and the story of Joe dealing with Mary's death is actually quite touching at moments. Is it well written enough to live up to the show at its best? Not nearly. But it's amusing enough. Another thing this episode has going for it is the absolutely GORGEOUS Joanne Froggatt as Saskia. It made me smile when Joe so bluntly said he thought Emma was better looking. I disagree. Don't get me wrong, I think Sheridan Smith is a good looking woman but Joanne Froggatt gets my vote every time! She plays such a lovely character in this too, angelic (and yes, that's a pun when you think about it!), and Anthony's become a very pleasant bloke too, takes very much so after Barbara there! Not a hint of Jim about him at all! Denise is her father's daughter all right! So, yes, I may be down on these post-Queen of Sheba Christmas specials, they're not great, but this wasn't a bad one really.

The outtakes are so good from this episode, highly recommend watching them if you can

There's actually two sort of references to Spaced in this episode... please let that win next time finally, it's been two years
