Josh, fly tipping is illegal dumping.

Jeez the show really lost its way with these specials.

This one is just alright I guess. I'd say the writing doesn't feel as tight as perhaps it once did. A lot of the jokes have started to feel tired and unoriginal. The characters begin to feel more annoying than funny a lot of the time. But I'm glad that you still found enjoyment out of it, that's really why we are all here isn't it.

The style of these episodes feels different partly because they moved from the single camera real time filming style to jump cuts over different time scales. Possibly because they were hour long one off specials rather than a series. I still love the last few episodes but they are filmed in a very different way to the first three series of half hour episodes.

You have probably been asked this before but the lady who plays Nanna Norma also plays a lovely character in the Vicar of Dibley.. it will also be an introduction to the lunatic world of little English villages :D

I think this is the first truly poor episode. It's fair to say The Queen of Sheba was a tough act to follow and The New Sofa last week did pale in comparison but I quite liked it regardless. This one, for me, is so crass, poorly written, and over-acted it makes me cringe. Where is the former grittiness? Naturalistic acting? Subtle jokes? Charming if slightly simple characters? They're so thick, there's barely a brain cell between them in this episode. And I don't mind that the real time thing has been lost or they're leaving the living room, it just needs to be well written. The entire premise of the episode doesn't really make sense in terms of timescales either. In 1998 when the show began, Jim and Barbara had been married 27 years. Fast forward 11 years and they're celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary? Did they leave it 10 years before they had kids, because the original set up was that Denise came along almost as soon as they got married and by that logic, she's also gone from being 26 years old to 49 years old in the space of 11 years. I get it that they added a few years on in the Queen of Sheba so they could employ older actors to play David and Lewis, but they've seriously fast forwarded here. Not for me, sorry. I ADORED series 1-3 and The Queen of Sheba and that's why it hurts so much! Haha! I will take the textured, sharply observed humour of that over repetitive jokes about simpletons repeating the same things ad nauseam - if it isn't The One Show theme tune, it's the "Pearl of Prestatyn" and if it isn't that they're all going mental over a golden egg cup. Give me strength! Don't even get me started on "I want to go to the North/South divide" and "I always fancied Yves Saint Laurent". This is Trigger's blinking scene in OFAH. In stereo. On steroids. The characters are uneducated and quite simple, fine. Making them absolute imbeciles is something else. Whoever's enjoying these last few dregs, well, I'm happy for you! But I'll stick to my classic Royle Family, and for me, it ended, quite firmly with the Royles honouring Norma's wish to have FUN at her funeral. :-)

As I'm not really sure where to post show suggestions, or how they get approved to get on the polls, I'm going to post my suggestion here... Could you please add 'Derry Girls' to the poll? it's one of the best comedies to be released in recent years, would love to see it reacted to.

AfterWorkReactions

Hey bud, you can leave suggestions in the comments if you like, I see them here first. I add shows to the polls once I have received multiple recommendations for them. I will add it to my list bud thanks for the recommendation.

I still find it enjoyable but the jokes do seem a lot more surreal the unique beauty of it was the fact that it was close to reality and people related to it especially from working class backgrounds. As I said I still enjoy it but it took a very different turn in these specials in my opinion.

- What you saw on the buffet was pork slices with a slice of hard-boiled egg in the middle. Is that not a thing in the States? I'm guessing you don't have Scotch Eggs either then? They're hard-boiled eggs wrapped in sausage meat with herbs and spices coated in breadcrumbs. Delicious! - Trevor McDonald is a famous UK newsreader, hence Jim's astonishment that Barbera would mistake him for Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption. - Terry Waite was an envoy for the Church of England who attempted to negotiate the release of hostages in Beirut, Lebanon in the late 80's. He was taken hostage himself and kept captive alone for four years. (he was chained to a radiator)

I always saw Jim in these specials as having learnt not to take his family for granted after normas death which is why he's not as miserable

What was once a natural and grounded series, in terms of relatability, is now a broad comedy. You can see the seems of the writing. It's no longer naturalistic. It's not that it would be terrible, were it an episode of a separate series but rather, it's a terrible continuation of a pre-established series. One which used to be grounded and relatable. I'm not a fan of these latter day specials at all. The series used to be so damn good, but now it's forgotten what made it a classic in the first place. It's gone from Mike Leigh to Michael Bay. Such a shame.

Tony Smyth

''Mike Leigh to Michael Bay'' is a bit of an exaggeration Brett. I saw no explosions or stuntmen. I grew up in the 60s/70s and witnessed conversations like this going on all the time in my Grannies' houses. Whenever anyone farted they blamed it on the dog. When the dog died they got a new one.

I read Terry Waites autobiography after his release and enjoyed it, was really disappointed with his next book, "How to bleed a radiator ".
