Your 1980s gaming rig appears to have an Xbox in it :P

Mate absolutely loving these my guy :>

Loving the vids!

The joys of filming on an iPhone in a 50 hz country

Tom Swinnen

Literally want to do something like this in my basement. But it has to be cheap or free stuff as well, because the amount of money people ask these days for stuff they think is "retro" or "vintage" while it was practically worthless even when it was new is insane.

TJ @ The Variety Show Podcast

If you ever look to record the old consoles for videos, find yourself a cheap dvd recorder / player. They record as the consoles native resolution and you can then rip the dvd to PC. Much cheaper and gets better results than a lot of the HDMI upgrade cables etc. Also a lot cheaper than streaming cards and you don’t get the lag.

Anonymous

I love these Aussie friendly uploads, great way to start the morning

Anonymous

What's about that Nintendo Switch? Why is he there?

Anonymous

I still have my OG Xbox and ps2 and still play them even to this day. With your Xbox have you removed your time capacitor yet, as it will corrode and break your Xbox if left?

Anonymous

Have you heard of armored core it’s a video game series where you customize robots and fight with them

Anonymous

Blowing into cartridges work and nobody can tell me otherwise

Anonymous

Vid about triumph when?

Anonymous

As a percussionist you have no idea how much it irritates me to see you putting stuff on top of drums

Anonymous

dankgamez

Anonymous

I'm too early, nobody has mentioned replacing capacitors yet Edit: No wait, someone said to remove the time keeping one in the Xbox

Anonymous

I love that during phantom crash he said "The frame rate is a bit low" as though he wasn't playing on a TV from the fricKING SEVENTIES

Anonymous

Lol I love how you use drums as little stands

Anonymous

I LOVED PHANTOM CRASH WHEN I WAS YOUNG AND I COULDNT EVER FIND IT. I thought that game was just totally lost and that I'd never be reunited with it

Anonymous

It's a cute setup, though I really don't think that's the right TV for PS2 games. You'd want like a late 90s Trinitron for that.

Anonymous

Honestly check out the Mech Warrior series for giant fighting robot itch

Anonymous

Duuude Phantom Crash I loved playing that as a kid, I could never get past this one boss who has lazers on her mech tho, I should really get back into it and try and beat it....if my xbox hasn't died from the plague yet

Anonymous

You just made me upset that my fam threw out our old CRT 😂

Anonymous

still waiting for the rip senheiser video

Anonymous

Iv been looking for dynasty warriors 3 for years!

Anonymous

Gaijin has some like phantom crash. Its called crossout. I mean i had an og xbox but all i played on it was halo.

Anonymous

In my opinion a bit overexposed but other than that pretty clear and visible

Anonymous

another solid video ! man i miss the OG Xbox days when games just had to be fun and they didn't have to make sense or have crazy back stories

Anonymous

You should check out CROSSOUT, that's like the new version of Phantom Crash 🤔

Anonymous

hell yeah, i got a chonky ps2 as well. Man i have to make a time capsule lounge area too. ALSO IM SORRY YES DW3 AND 5. FINALLY SOMEONE MENTIONING IT'S GLORY. tho 5 is 100% better im sorry

Anonymous

Have you seen the pokemon branded true wireless earbuds? The ad shows off the packaging so much I was expecting some clean red and white ones but no they're ugly bright yellow and look painful to wear. AND the container is a pokeball which, while cute, is not good for pockets

ChrisFratz

That Addams Family game looks like an NES game. Not graphically, but gameplay wise,. Think about it, slippery controls, static background, etc.

Pietro Gagliardi

Don't worry, Captain Planet on MD sucked for everyone else too =P (except for two French magazines that gave it greater than the equivalent of a 75% for some reason...) And yes, the Genki logo is top-tier — they still use it, and they should keep it forever. Apparently the sequel to Phantom Crash is a PS2 game called "S.L.A.I.: Steel Lancer Arena International", if Wikipedia is anything to go by.

Anonymous

Anonymous

that's a nice bass you got there just hanging out

PlayerN

Thanks for the game recommendation mate, think I'm gonna try finding a copy of Phantom Crash now

Nick

I played the sequel to Phantom Crash on the PS2, the robot AIs talked and stuff in that one. It was awesome, would recommend.

Anonymous

Are those old or new Pro/4s? Just curious.

Anonymous

Actually had only the OG Xbox and Genesis (Mega Drive) for most of my childhood. That's all I had and played. Up until like 2011, where we got a 360 and actual internet

Anonymous

Call this aesthetic garagecore

Anonymous

I tend to blow on electronics and not care, but if you do at all, just get an air can. There’s also electric versions for the environmentally conscious.

Void345

I used to have one of the Sony Beans from todays video

Anonymous

fucking mint, mad jealous of your nugget warehouse

Anonymous

WAIT!!! The developers behind the underrated Tokyo Xtreme Racer series (AKA the Shutokou Battle series) also made an awesome robot combat game? I HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW!!!!!

Anonymous

I still got my chonky PS2, my friends had a flat one and it always overheated for them. Not me and my CHONK

Anonymous

Yeah! As a bass player myself I want to know more about it!

Anonymous

I have a thorn colour tv from around the same time and a Sanyo betacord 9300!

Anonymous

Would loooove to see halo on a crt again

Anonymous

Hey you might legit like robocraft on steam its a lot like phantom crash online and its freeeeeeeee.

Anonymous

Man, this video just reminds me how much I miss Phantom Crash. Loved that game growing up!

Anonymous

You need to move those old speakers further away from the TV. The speakers are not magnetically shielded like modern home cinema and computer speakers so will distort the CRT. In the video you can see magnetic field lines. It would be a shame to ruin a nice old working CRT TV. Edit: The speakers probably won't do any favours to the game consoles or cartridges stored near them either, although of that I am less certain.

Anonymous

Setup is kinda nice super jealous

Karen Sykora

Phantom Crash legit one of the biggest hidden gems in all games history.

Anonymous

'Cause Nintendo keeps remaking their games from the '80s? :-P

Anonymous

Warehouse patreon vids have overtaken book patreon vids as my favorite patreon vids

Anonymous

If you're looking for guidance on filming CRT's, Clint at the LGR channel has a some tutorials up on his recording techniques that I would absolutely recommend.

Anonymous

Make sure you open up your Xbox and remove the clock capacitor. They are known to leak (and your probably also started leaking) and the electrolyte is eating away the traces on the PCB. Also giving the CPU and GPU new thermal paste never hurts

Anonymous

DYNASTY WARRIORS!!!!!! Bro, I thought I was the only one who enjoyed that type of game since it was a real button masher but it was so FUN

Jake G

where's the car channel?

Anonymous

I see a pair of Koss Pro-4AA cans on top of that stack

Anonymous

Just gonna point out that Phantom Crash looks a lot like Armored Core, which has several entries on the PS2, give it a try if you have the time! Also, to echo what another person said, Clint from LGR has some tutorials on recording a CRT, you may need a proper DSLR, but I won’t say that’s for certain. Keep up the fantastic work!

Anonymous

Phantom Core weirdly reminds me of a early 360 game called Chrome hounds, online super customizable mechs, with a focus on Online Play. Had a unique radio system where you had to stay within Radar Range of your Teammates to actually talk to them. Another gem that needs to be modernized.

Anonymous

He's the angriest aussie you've ever heard. The games suck so bad he makes up his own cuss words...he's the angry Grado AKG nerd...he's the angry...audio nerd.

Anonymous

From one 1990''s baby to another i know exactly where your coming from mate. Finally picked up and restored my very own NES last year and got my hands on an 42" LG 480i plasma TV and it perfectly suits those 90's and early 2000's consoles, haven't tried anything that needs a ariel connection but the NES, xbox, ps2 all work great, would fire up my Gamecube a bit more if i had a few more games for it (damn Paper Mario costing $300 these days!! I blame frank!)

Anonymous

Phantom Crash with its mechs and customization shares some thematic elements with Steambot Chronicles for the PS2, which aside from the homophobia in a sidequest, is my contender for greatest game of all time.

Anonymous

Also, I would love to see you stream retro games (or even newer games) from the lounge as a chill hangout stream. Just point the camera at the TV, zoom out a bit so we get the ambiance, and chat with the chat. Paradise.

Anonymous

That is one hell of a rig.

Devon Fitzpatrick

Is it weird that I kind of enjoy that crunchy lazy GEMS music for the Mega Drive/Genesis? (edit: bloody yank over here)

Anonymous

The Xbox game you play first Reminds me of armored core for Playstation.

Anonymous

man the og xbox was great back in the day. i've never even been that into sports games but the pack-in game i got with it (or one of them) was Amped and i have so much nostalgia for it--specifically the music. it's not a soundtrack i'd listen to on its own but i always found it great to chill out to while playing the game. also Halo. always gotta mention Halo.

Anonymous

Should check out monster hunter rise since you have a switch

Anonymous

If you liked Phantom Crash, there's a chance you might also enjoy the Armored Core series of games. Entries on PS1 and PS2

Anonymous

The Xbox could be affected (has a hard drive), but not the cartridges or sega console.

Anonymous

I'm from 1990 to. Kinda sucked to have a round number birthday mid lockdown

Anonymous

Dude, I think you would really enjoy armed and dangerous on the Xbox. Probably my favorite game

Anonymous

Not that related but behold, Shrek and Burlesque, https://www.shreklesque.com/?fbclid=IwAR3PBdBW4IdZIjTp15AAbSv8qjgiqZdG3nSaau8tjY3lZ9nM1YolgrNqnkA

Duenas

This is honestly the best 80s rig I have ever seen. It really brings back a lot of childhood memories

Anonymous

PS2 on top, where it belongs.

Anonymous

You ever rip CDs to your Xbox and use it like an Mp3 player while gaming?

Anonymous

Please mod the Xbox, you can do some interesting things with them.

Anonymous

Wow, 31! I thought you were 23-24!

Anonymous

You forgot the ps2 Mine died sadly

Anonymous

Who was your favourite character in the dynasty warrior

Anonymous

For a future after show, I'd love to see the motorcycles you have!

Anonymous

bro you just unlocked secret memories I didn't even know I had with the phantom crash gameplay!!

Anonymous

Very fun but you should also see about getting an 80's/90s TV or monitor with RGB input! It's incredibly clear and absolutely gorgeous.

Anonymous

l a v a l a m p

Anonymous

nicely framed that TV, I liked it 👍🏻

OzRetrocomp

Kriesler made great TVs. A family friend had one when I was little. It had a built-in Pong game, which was my first vidya gaming experience. Good times.

Anonymous

Was that a Spector NS?!

Anonymous

My. God. Phantom Crash! I got that game as a kid because I liked robots and was too dumb to figure out how to play it properly. I recently wanted to try it again, but couldn’t remember it’s name!

Anonymous

Was going to come down and mention LGR, was not disappointed to see I didn't have to.

Anonymous

Hey are those speakers KEFs? They look uncannily like my C55's

Anonymous

-Spark -Compression -Fuel -Air

Anonymous

Me who was asleep as for me this was uploaded at midnight

Anonymous

I have my dad's Vectrex in my room and it's a total nugget straight from the 80's but I love it and I strongly recommend you try to get one !

Anonymous

Oh man, if you loved Phantom Crash, you should see if you can find S.L.A.I. for PS2! Its a sequel to it with the same style of gameplay, and I spent way too much time playing it back in the day! Still has that obscure/underground Japanese soundtrack as well!

Shaun

Make sure you remove the clock capacitor from your Xbox! Those things are coming up on 20 years old now. They leak and destroy the Xbox motherboard

Anonymous

Dankpods is becoming AVGN :-P

Anonymous

Can we get a studio / what instruments you own tour?? Specifically that specter bass.....😉

Anonymous

That was very interesting. But yeah sorry to put this here, in the comments but I know of/own something you may want to take a look at. The Bose SoundWear, that thing is really cool

Anonymous

make sure that that xbox dont have any leaky caps. xbox are prone to that

Anonymous

It might be possible to play Phantom Crash on PC through an emulator, it wouldn't be a remake but you could probably get it to run in at a higher resolution with better framerates.

Anonymous

Make sure you remove the capacitor of death in that xbox, it only keeps time and it was super cheap and they leak and it will destroy the system

Anonymous

I could spend ludicrous amounts of time in that retro dungeon. Mad jealous

Anonymous

Oh this was sooo nice too watch! It was so nostalgic and you drowning in nostalgia playing those games was so funny. The frame rate and shutter speed were totally okay I'd be totally fine watching videos like that.

Anonymous

Love that Spector bass hiding in the corner there. I'd love to see a whole music gear tour at some point.

Anonymous

Mate, I'm a music loving tech game nerd from 1981, and these new directions you're going in is so fucking good. Keep it going!

Anonymous

so i might ruin some more of your free time!!!!! so there is a sequel to Phantom Crash! but because of strange early 2000s politics it has to have a different name and was only released on the PS2. it is called... "S.L.A.I.: Steel Lancer Arena International" and it is a slightly updated Phantom crash and it is as good as the original. find it and play it! it is amazing!

Anonymous

I've started a job at cashies and we have a severe lack of nuggs its disappointing.

June Guts

wait he talks about phantom crash in this? that's one of my favorite games of all time. i really hate slai a lot tho tbh LMAO

Alex Potts

I do have to ask, could he live there?

Ty34er

I actually had a Walkman Bean as my first MP3 player. The screen was brighter on mine so maybe yours needed a factory reset. I don't think it used proprietary software but I believe it was a Windows only software. One of the little arms that goes in the rails broke so then I couldn't hold it. Also, middle press of the d pad was play/pause.

June Guts

Phantom Crash is one of my favorite games ever man. For the longest time in my adulthood I didn't have a working xbox but I do again and I fuckin' still love that game.

Anonymous

This is very cool!

Anonymous

Now I just want to play armored cored ;_;

Manuel Uribe

There's a channel called Technology Connections. It's one of my favorites, and he has a vid specifically on how he films CRTs

Anonymous

I absolutely love the look of the lounge, you've got the whole setup perfect

Anonymous

That setup looks like a good background for vids.

Anonymous

You better explain the Koss PRO4AA's on top of the PS2. Zeos absolutely hates them, and i'm curious how they sound in your opinion

Anonymous

Have you removed the clock capacitor from your og Xbox? If not then I would highly recommend it, it may already be leaking its evil corrosive juices

Anonymous

You say it's worth nothing, but I can feel LGR and Techmoan turning green with envy.

Anonymous

Yessss, I’m glad someone said something already, that’s how mine died 😅

Malifor2210

I enjoyed this soo much! Man my childhood console was that exact FAT PS2 on the top of that tele! Oh man nostalgia

Anonymous

Nice, a Kriesler to go with your Chrysler

Anonymous

patreon video idea: Show off your mini USB cable pile, and "the bin" of disembodied ipod parts

Anonymous

You should be able to get phantom running on a PC emulator but those aren't always reliable. There might be a Raspberry pi one someday though. Actually there is a ps2 emulator for raspberry pi U could play the sequel to phantom crash on it. The raspberry pi emulators are pretty good and they are contiounisly getting updates. :)

Anonymous

Hey just in case you're looking for more classic games, the game Metal Arms: Glitch in the System is in the same vein as Phantom Crash. I think you would enjoy it, try finding an old copy!

Anonymous

Was that tv before PAL and NTSC?

Anonymous

Great to see classics like Crazy Frog Racer and Antz Extreme Racing in your PS2 collection.

Anonymous

Did you film 4K 24fps for the screen? Also the TV may just need degaussing to be fair

Anonymous

Hope you took the clock capacitor out of that Xbox. It will self destruct sooner or later.

Anonymous

Playing the halo games on the original xbox was my childhood. I wish they'd bring back local multiplayer on the newer games

Anonymous

Dankpods ik you're really into moddin ipods, so you should know that OG Xboxes can be modded to have a nearly infinite amount of games on it. Anything from the earliest games you can think of in arcades and on atari to the playstation and n64 (tho those two specifically are a bit hit/miss) My dad soft mods loads of em, they all have a few thousand games on them and you can customize the menus and music to be whatever you want. Its super coo

Anonymous

So many musicians seem to have a bass just hanging around for some reason :D

Anonymous

It hides the pixels! With other bigger pixels! :P

Anonymous

I miss the simpler days of the OG Xbox. I’ve had the same Xbox Live gamertag since those days though, all these years and now I’m on my Series S with the OG Xbox gamertag.

Anonymous

that set up high key the vibe

Anonymous

Lovin the setup! Btw for everybody seeing this the AKG K240's are now on sale from $69 (nice) to $54 on the AKG official website, just picked up a pair myself.

Anonymous

Hell yeah, i just got some K92s and velour cups, i have never sat down just to listen to music but i do now its amazing

Anonymous

if you haven’t already i advise you open your og xbox and take out the clock cap otherwise it can leak and kill the console.

JokersJuicyAss

Are we watching the Cannonball run?

Hey mate. Got me curious about that bass there. That a warwick? 👀

Anonymous

Anonymous

yes Danketh please do a Graveyard tour! The Addams Family came on the screen when i typed "graveyard". ITS A SIGN BOYS! lol

Anonymous

@Dankpods! A modern version of Phantom Crash MIGHT be the free to play Pc/console game CROSSOUT!!. Its like vehicular combat mixed with legos. Been OBSESSED since i found it, & im the same way; i rarely eat sleep & breathe a game. Its "free", but youll have a way better time dropping a little $ for sicker cars & weapons. That Phantom Crash game u were playing IMMEDIATELY made crossout come to mind. Hope ya see this, bc youll be obsessed too lol

Anonymous

The mech w the legs & rocket salvo launcher parts ARE AVAILABLE IN CROSSOUT & look almost EXACTLY the same, its kinda crazy lol

Anonymous

i remember a game with similar mech gameplay on one of my ps2 demo discs, from what i remember (from when i was 8) the gameplay was really similar

Anonymous

I have a soft spot for CRTV's and this is perfect <3

Anonymous

This was all a disguise so Dankpods can make a let's play channel

Anonymous

When I was a kid we would have to blow on our SNES and megadrive cartridges all the times, though we would blow on them through our shirts (or other assorted cloths) so that the air could get through, bit not the saliva... Also, maybe you could get in contact with someone like Clint from LGR. I`m sure he would give you some pointers on capturing CRT footage wthout the scan lines

José Jacob

Pearl Firecracker snare. noice!

Anonymous

I'd love to see an official DankPods speedrun! That'd be some great content for either the main channel or Garbage Time!

Anonymous

I was born in 1981 and the original NES was great. Although the cartridges were like the Sega . The sounds from Adams Family seems like they were from the original NES for Super Mario Bros but they did a pitch change.

Anonymous

Aaahhhh the aethstetics of a crt, pure nostalgia

Anonymous

A Good Video

Anonymous

Here is a really good video from LGR about how to record a CRT and not get the weird lines or scrolling effect https://youtu.be/aJKV7fTJRIc

Anonymous

nice setup

Anonymous

really cool

Anonymous

That game looks really similar to to "crossout". A more modern game where you build your robots ad battle online. You should try it!

Anonymous

if you like customised mexh battles check out Armoured Core: for answer (wierd name i know, just roll with it) allows you to customise your state-of-the-art bang bang!

Nuno Campos

That setup looks amazing!

Anonymous

There’s also the mobile “war robots” but because they’re both free they’re overflowing with donations and in the case war robots there’s also ads

Anonymous

You are literally the only other human being I have seen talk about Phantom Crash in any way, let alone play it. I nearly couldn't believe you were showing it, as far as I am concerned I was the only person left on Earth that cared about that game. Me and my older brothers loved that game and we played it all the time as kids! If you didn't know Phantom Crash had a direct sequel for the Playstation 2 after Genki got bought out by Konami, its called Steel Lancer Arena International (S.L.A.I) Genki is still around, I've looked them up, but its looking like they are exclusively a mobile game company these days. Anyway, heaps sick to see somebody else singing that under-known masterpiece's name. Only subbed like two days ago and I already had it pay for itself!

Anonymous

hey here is a tip get an RAC (those red white and yellow cable) to HDMI ya the text is kinda trash but the picture is grate i say get it cuz you can use your switch or anything with an HDMI port

Anonymous

I too lost my shit when he pulled out Phantom Crash. That game is my JAM. I play SLAI more nowadays because I can emulate it at a good resolution and widescreen but Phantom Crash was my first.. I need to get the xbox emulator working on my end because my poor old box is getting on in years.

Anonymous

Im pretty sure I have that rug. Why did you steal it from my house

greninjazac

I’m honestly ready to hear you rip into crappy sega games like sonic 3D blast and whatnot XD

Anonymous

You should definitely look into getting the clock capacitor fixed on that Xbox so it doesn't leak and mess things up! That's a really important mod to do and I don't know if anyone's recommended it yet but look up "original Xbox clock capacitor corrosion" or something akin to that phrase. Google will get you the rest of the way from there. It's a really easy fix that will prevent the original clock capacitor from eventually destroying the motherboard!

Anonymous

Sounded a little plastered at the end there. :)

Anonymous

I had that sofa when I was a kid, think it's still in storage somewhere

Anonymous

as an NA lad I must admit mega drive is a way cooler name

Anonymous

Oh hell yeah. I was born in ‘82 and I was a Genesis and XBox kid (after being an NES kid). I played so much Morrowind on my Xbox, back before I could afford a gaming PC. Now I have it on PC with Morrowind Rebirth so it looks modern tho it plays the same.

Anonymous

There is a Game on steam that is similar to phantom crash, about making robots and fighting with them

Anonymous

You still play games better than that game journalist trying to beat the cuphead tutorial level

Anonymous

Gear Up on steam is just a modern version of Phantom Crash

Anonymous

If you ever want an absolute mess of a game to try on your mega drive, try to find Toys / Toys: Let The Toy Wars Begin. I don't know if it was released outside of the US honestly but I remember having that game as a kid on my Genesis and never being able to figure the thing out. Tried it again recently and I'm still lost lol. Dig the setup!!

Ze Chair

Is someone going to tell him about War Robots? (Actually don’t it’s a pay to win mess) it’s like Phantom Crash but EA

Anonymous

I've sat in Tavarish's shop lounge and watched TV. Yours wins, because CRT.

Anonymous

the nintendo switch really doesn't fit in lolol

Anonymous

should look at doing some mods to the Xbox, apparetly the battery cap is prone to leaking, and maybe look at RGB modding the TV and bypassing the antenna, but there is a lot of high voltage guff in there, so probs better not to

Anonymous

Why do i love it

Anonymous

oh man, I know this isn't the point of this video at all, but I really love the look of that Triumph motorbike. Do they come in that color???

Anonymous

I feel you on the Original Xbox, that was my first console that we actually had in my house and I was forever changed. I'm still a massive Halo nerd and I still have some of the more unknown titles too. Never played Phantom Crash, but it looks fun!

Mmaauuraa

I REALLY WANNA SEE A DANK SPEEDRUN LOL

Anonymous

I really want to see u play concer!!!!!!

Anonymous

play world of tanks

Anonymous

Ohh boy dynasty warriors me and my uncle played that on the ps2 for ages

Anonymous

Yup, original Xbox with good old Halo!

Anonymous

Someone show this man robocraft

Anonymous

I want that tv but i can never find it

Anonymous

Just read all 200+ comments and no one seems to have mentioned it, but you need to look at shutter speeds if you're filming a CRT, not frame rates. Match the shutter speed with the hertz of your screen (in Freedom Land it's 60hz on CRT's, but PAL regions are 50hz). If your shutter speed is set to 1/50th of a second you should be good if that's an Aussie tv. The Moment app on iPhone allows you to change the shutter independently of the frame rates (and skip over the crappy auto-shutter in iPhones). Haven't tested Moment on iPhone with a CRT, so your mileage may vary. Hope that helps!

Anonymous

Can't wait to see some old nugget gaming vids!

Anonymous

Oh, our family had a similar CRT TV, used it for 12 years before it finally croaked. How missed my old fat PS2 & PS1. Fucking Sony leaving money on the table because of their half-arsed implementation of backwards compatibility. Oh, Phantom Crash. It's sorta like Mechassault & Armored Core but with smoother controls. I played the sequel of this on the PS2, Steel Lancer Arena International and it was fun too. I still prefer Armored Core 3 Silent Line & Mechassault 2(which had Papa Roach creating the soundtrack LMAO).
