Oh my god I love this episode. I've always thought, the event immediately preceding Angel's return, Buffy makes peace with her decision to kill Angel to save the world and 'returns' Angel's ring as a symbol of that acceptance. It's kind of a completion of the act, as in the moment she had to make the decision very quickly, but in the moment of giving the ring back her sacrifice was complete. I never believed The First, taking credit for bringing him back, in this episode, because it -Angel being returned from Hell- seemed like an act of Grace that was a response to Buffy's act of love and sacrifice for the world.

There's a scene in the library in season two where they need to stay late to do research, and Willow suggests they do a 'round robin', calling home and telling everybody's parents that they will be up studying at everybody elses house. Xander, an only child, goes first: "Hi Mom...Xander..."!
