In this first, eponymous photoset of Justyna Neryng's new Bubble-gum Bouguereau photo-series, poet and life model Priss Nash serves us a set of bubble-gum blowing poses, referencing both Pascal Möhlmann's 2023 painting 16:32 and William-Adolphe Bouguereau's 1885 painting The Young Shepherdess.

Both paintings employ a trompe-l'œil setting - an illusory sky and landscape painted as a backdrop to the model while the model posed in the studio. The contradictory light and thin paint of the background indicate that Bouguereau's Shepherdess would have posed in the studio while she was painted over the top of the separately-rendered landscape, while the unity of painterly marks in Möhlmann's portrait suggests that both background and figure were worked up in the studio simultaneously using photographic reference.

In both paintings the cloud-scudded skies give way to a horizon line at the model's chest and while we have not taken our allusion to the works quite so far as to add the landscape itself we invite you to introduce a setting of your choice, to borrow from Justyna's New Zealand cloud scape, or to represent Priss with no background at all. If you do choose to combine your own background with Priss's photographs think about how your process will affect your outcome: do you draw or paint the background from life, then add the figure over the top, do you collage a photo of the background with a photo of the model on photoshop/on paper and work from that single image, or do you place all of your reference in front of you and mix the elements together on your canvas?
