Harry Partch was a pioneer in the field of microtonality, the use of pitches in between our standard notes. He was an adamant believer in the idea of pure intervals, and spoke very strongly against modern tuning practices for their "egregious corruption" of just intonation, and he decided to use his prowess as an instrument maker to fix that. He built a whole new set of rules for scale construction, and applied them to create the Genesis Scale, a massive 43-note structure out of which he built many of his works.
