Garden Planning with Davy!

Comments

Anonymous

Yes! Can't wait to see all the developments this year.

Anonymous

Love the discovery!

Anonymous

I can easily get my old Paris flat into my present living room, amazing to imagine. Can't wait to see the lake underway ! xo

Anonymous

I love that you are all using the Spode mugs, I use mine every day too xoxo

Anonymous

What fun! Davey is a real talent.

Anonymous

You are SO lucky to have Davy to help you through all of this! He has been very thorough. What a lot of work! I can't wait to see things start moving forward.

Anonymous

My favorite longtime Youtube binges have been British gardening shows like Garden Rescue and Love Your Garden. I've been so inspired by these gardeners, Charlie Dimmick and the wondrous Rich Brothers and the old Ground Force crew ( : I fantasize about all of you (lot) meeting up at LaLande to brainstorm and play in the gardens ( :

Anonymous

Very impressive, Mr Davy is!

Anonymous

p.s. I just watched Dick and Angel Strawbridge create a gorgeous bath house from an old laundry ruin on their place...but they didn't add the shower they had talked about ) : I would want to at least rinse off in a simple outside shower after coming out of any pool or pond.

Anonymous

Davy is so talented and knowledgeable. What a great friend of the chateau he is. Michael and the tandoori oven ☺️☺️

Anonymous

So very exciting!

Anonymous

I agree with Philip. The surrounding farmland is not unspoilt as the original trees, shrubs, bushes etc were removed to provide space for farming and livestock- which changed its environment. Though to Stephanie’s point, that land has never been developed and allows for broader sightlines.

Anonymous

A knot garden !

Anonymous

Wahoo! I'm so excited for the new works outside that are being planned. The Chateau is going to be better than ever

Anonymous

I wondered about the footings needed for mummy and the other apartments balcony?

Anonymous

I’ve had an idea about the parking lot... if the ground where you intend to have it is firm enough during the time of year you would use it (especially if used infrequently) why not have a pasture parking lot? You just mow the grass down in a semi-level spot and let the cars park there. I was at a big week long workshop at an old church camp in the country in New Hampshire and they used an old cow pasture hidden away behind mature trees in the hills for all the guest parking. It was amazing as you didn’t need your car while you were there and it was unspoiled when the cars didn’t need to be there!

Anonymous

Please do not forget Selmar's area for dancing !

Anonymous

“... Capability Davey..” 😄

Anonymous

Really interesting and lots of great ideas. I saw in one of Amaury's vlogs (Castle ten Berghe) he built a willow shelter. Could be quite easy to add some of them throughout the woods maybe? exciting times

Anonymous

It's going to be so beautiful!

Anonymous

I watched that a while ago and I thought the placement of the toilet in open view of the pool area was rather odd.

Anonymous

How interesting this video was and how knowledgeable Davy is! I'm so happy he crossed your path! Burn this day into your memory...so you can look back in a year...five years...ten years from now... come back to this video to "remember when" it was just the beginning.

Anonymous

Great idea to have a master plan..... don’t forget to establish a reliable and strong flow of water to the walled vegetable garden. Last summers efforts looked very frustrating!

Anonymous

Very productive meeting. I felt like I was right there with you taking in all the amazing ideas. Can’t wait to see this years progress. For storage: I would love to see you create a sewing/fabric room. Just getting ALL YOUR FABRIC in one please would free up a lot of storage for other things 🤣🤣You could also use it as an upholstery room.

Anonymous

Great planning!!!! Thanks for sharing! Exciting times at Lalande!! It would be fun to have a little fairy tale crone’s cottage in the forest for a cup of tea and an afternoon spent reading. With a tandoori oven, of course!!

Anonymous

Davy is a treasure. 🥂

Anonymous

I love this Stephanie , such great plans , ❤️

Anonymous

Loved this so much! Davy is brilliant.

Anonymous

Yes-- exciting stirrings and dreaming going on here! I'd like to put forward a suggestion for installation or building of a labyrinth near the chapel (maybe behind it before the woods?). A labyrinth is a fairly old set up (the medieval one at Chartres Cathedral is very famous) that can be used for meditation and contemplation. It could be used as part of the garden room or other ideas as well.

Anonymous

Hi Stephanie, love ALL of these ideas 💖 Would you consider adding a Fragrance Garden to one of the Garden Rooms? They are magical and amazing places to de-stress. I remember you speaking of a fragrant, night-blooming garden. 🪴 Maybe too consider a labyrinth close to the Chapel as in ancient times they had a spiritual significance. They also aid in meditation, relaxation, breathing and lower blood pressure & heart rate. Whatever you, Michael, and Nick choose will be amazing. Can’t wait to see more! Xoxo

Anonymous

Wow - house blocks of 100 Square metres !! Where I am in Northern Australia our average house block is about 700 square meters. But then again the whole of Eurlope fits into Australia. So interesting to see all the old maps with the lake inset. Cant wait tp see. it all unfold.

Anonymous

That was absolutely fascinating. Thank you so much for letting us become flies on the wall during the discussion. It’s all so very exciting!

Anonymous

You could place the small fountain that's in pieces, at the centre of the maze. That could be very beautiful and soothing.

Anonymous

Davy has to be one of the most intelligent men I have ever known of. He has such depth of understanding of so many things to be so young! So glad he has such a passion for La Lande!

Anonymous

Thank you Stephanie. I love these types of videos - the plans are so important to get the foundations right. Could you imagine having to dig up something that had just been landscaped the year or two before to lay cables or piping 😳 I'm so looking forward to the coming year to see how the plans progress. ❤

Anonymous

Would it be possible to take from another chateaux that can no longer be restored and use it for Lalande? Like here in the states there are companies that will take from demolition sites and sell for lower prices. This can be anywhere from building goods to landscaping goods such as cobblestones. Im sure there might be a way you can find out if this resource is available in some way, shape or form. France must have so many places where restoration is no longer possible but you can take whats available and use for Lalande.

Anonymous

Wow. That was amazing!! Looking forward to seeing Davy's drawings. Even just seeing those will be amazing. How exciting. Go team LaLande!!

Anonymous

Davey has done so much! Amazing! With regard to "water" as in Lakes, moats, swimming and so on, I didn't hear about the resolution of the water sources to the walled garden. That involves pipes, etc, that would affect digging and leveling. Just curious.

Susan Hagadon

Exciting things ahead; looking forward. Stephanie, is that an engagement ring on your hand? Just noticed the lovely ring. Rock on!

Anonymous

@Susan Hagadon I noticed that too.! Glad you asked 😉

Anonymous

So interesting. I have always wondered why there seemed to be a bricked in window/door at the end of the old wing. Now I know!

Anonymous

Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to learn about outdoor spacial planning on such a large scale. This felt like a class and I loved it!!!! 😀

Anonymous

This is fun! I am happy for all the forward movement! Just some food for thought, maybe move the kitchen reno up on the list? Of course, I know you will do what is right for your biz, just thought I would throw it out there :-). I am excited to see all in what ever order!

Anonymous

It all sounds great, but if I owned a chateau, I’d be restoring the crumbling walls and ceilings before a maze and all that long list. I guess priorities are different for everyone. 🤷‍♀️

Anonymous

Great information. It's wonderful to be a part of the future transformations. 😊💜🇨🇦

Anonymous

So exciting!💖

Anonymous

This all sounds amazing! I think we're going to have to find a way to clone mummy and Dan hahaha

Anonymous

Very informative vlog Stephanie. Thank you for letting us see what all you have in-store for LeLande now and for future generations. So inspiring.

Anonymous

that was super interesting!

Anonymous

Davy is a treasure. 🌟 So knowledgeable!! What a cool vlog to watch.. I loved every detail. 🌳🌳 Also want to say that an amphitheater will change the prospects for the use of the Chateau in the future, it will make it a desirable destination for events, which would be amazing. Such an important and exciting feature to add!! ❤️👍🏻

Anonymous

I loved being a part of chateau renovation planning especially the outside environment. Thank you Stephanie. Wish I could be there to help.

Anonymous

It's great to see the long range planning begun. Very cool;) It's so fantastic that you have that map of the lake and Lalande! Great research and work Davy! I would think that records about the lake and LaLande would also be in local/regional archives/tax records or similar?

Anonymous

Excellent planning discussion. 2021 will be a more balanced approach to addressing the historic renovations, the structural requirements & and the esthetic necessities. “Capability Davey” is another gem of the Lalande community. 🤗❤️

Anonymous

This was wonderful. I loved seeing the old maps that Davy had researched. And the wide ranging discussions and brain storming was terrific. It was such fun being included in your session. Thank you Stephanie, Michael ,Davy et al. Loved it all.

Anonymous

Thank you. That was really interesting to watch.

Anonymous

I love what you are planning.

Anonymous

I have to agree. As pie in the sky as it sounds, for long term goals, because tv/youtube stuff comes and goes, but for long term stuff you have to be able to offer something that nobody else can. Think Hollywood bowl. Of course it actually will never rain here again BUT there can be structures put into place so it can protect the actors and audience from rain - maybe not the 1st year - but maybe that's the 2nd year- but long term - to be able to offer something really unique to attract people there. Especially if you are not going to offer weddings you need to be able to offer something to keep workshops and performances- even for the night - coming back year after year after year to keep it going as a business.

Anonymous

Absolutely fascinating and so exciting. Loved every minute of this discussion it all makes so much sense and it will be such a joy seeing it all come together slowly over time <3 <3 <3

Anonymous

2500+ patrons! Woohoo!!

Anonymous

The history of waterway systems and laws is so fascinating. I didn't even glaze over. We have extensive water rights laws in the west of the US too. (Colorado). I love that your land will be part of the ecosystem again. Just wondering why you need a swim pond and a lake. Can't you just swim in the lake?

Anonymous

Power to the boathouse means a silent electric boat for the lake!

Anonymous

Look out Sissinghurst. Stephanie is planning her garden. I'm so glad you included the orchard in your plans. I hope some day you will have a wassail. And cider. I love orchards. I pick fruit from my yard all summer - pears, plums, apples, apricots, and peaches. and peach martinis.

Anonymous

BTW - does all this planning include the watering system for the future gardens and the walled garden?

Anonymous

We LOVED watching this chat! It was like we were sitting at the table with you!!

Anonymous

Oh! One more thing. Have you gotten any inspiration from Giverny? I wish you could have an army of gardeners like they have at Giverny - with Dan as the sergeant. Maybe WWOOF - World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms can help. https://wwoof.net/

Anonymous

The only thing it seems that I don't think I heard mentioned was the boat house. Thanks Stephanie for including us in this uplifting vision of the future!

Anonymous

So interesting all the old maps an history Davy found..a long range plan is a good thing to have..really enjoyed this episode.

Anonymous

Stephanie I didnt hear the old quarry mentioned. Or I missed it. I thought many wonderful things could be created there.

Anonymous

That was awesome, I found it so interesting! Davy is very knowledgeable

Anonymous

A question, some time ago we were shown that below the ground heating source for the Chapel (was found I think cos someone fell into it!). What is planned for that?

Anonymous

How about the garden by the Chapel? Night blooming sweet flowers. I remember you mentioned it once. This was very informative. What fun.

Anonymous

Yes Suzanne, we are very blessed here in Australia with lots of land and open spaces.

Anonymous

Wouldn't the second small fountain work in the centre of the parterre?

Anonymous

Wisteria is also poisonous. Think about poisonous plantings and sheep, chickens, song birds, bunnies. Napoleonic map also shows two red dots for lake towers. And I thought you also wanted gazebo for music in the walled garden.

Daniel Hammond

Suggestion Box: Stephanie, I have been thinking about the care park. There is no escaping the need for a car park, but they can be quite unsightly necessities. (Rather like public loos!) If you know where the car park is to go, could you plant trees appropriate spaced out within the area so that they will provide essential shade for the cars in summer as well as softening the look of it? I doubt it would be difficult to work out the layout of where the cars will go and then you can plant trees that won't be too tall but which will offer shade and beauty. Avoid anything too deciduous because no one ones too many leaves etc falling into their car, but then, they don't want to return to a car which is like a bread oven either. It could be win/win to plant those trees now. Just an idea. Thank you for the video.

Anonymous

Yes, we used to do that for the Fall Fair on an island I lived on. I believe if the event was late summer, it needed to be watered down prior to the event to prevent a spark from the undercarriage of a vehicle igniting the dry grasses. And you're right, when not in use the rest of the year, it looked lovely and natural.

Anonymous

Drip irrigation?

Anonymous

I think they were just going through the wishlist for the outdoor areas today. Many of these items are "down the line", I'm sure.

Anonymous

Ah, that's because it's taken care of: I'm going to fund it for them when I win the lottery :)

Anonymous

Would you consider a small Midnight Garden of exclusively white plants? Beautiful to walk through during a full-ish moon!

Anonymous

Good meeting with good ideas. Where do you see the amphitheater? And why?

Anonymous

I'm so glad you will be making the wetlands an important part of the property. The are such a valuable resource.

Anonymous

Stephanie, I think it was on Escape to the chateau, where you mentioned the previous owner was reluctant initially to sell the chateau to you because he knew how much work was involved and he was not sure you were aware. Well! I think you were Meant to be an owner of that place, was written in the stars I say! :) out of curiosity did he see your vlogs or see photos on what you've done before the dear man passed?

Anonymous

That was delightful. Thank you for including us.

Anonymous

I so enjoyed this meeting! Now I fully understand where everything is in relation to each other and how big the estate is! I don’t know if it’s in keeping with chateau gardens but here in Charleston SC I am in love with a seashell folly on the grounds of Ashley Hall (a private girls school) I believe it is from the early 1800s. It’s a lovely little building covered in horse conch seashells. I was thinking you could use a folly for your fathers fountain (keeping it protected under a roofed structure that was open air or add windows you could throw open). That way you could have your cooled open space, with the lovely sound of water in the fountain. It could be small but whimsical in shape (an octagon perhaps, with an intricate roofline) and covered in shells. Also could be lit from within at night and could also be a place for a fragrant garden with gardenia and jasmine. I’m not sure about your hardiness zones so I’m not sure what plants would be appropriate. I think it could be magical and a beautiful focal point. It could even include statuary. Depending on the size you could even host beautiful intimate dinners in there too. Just an idea. All of your plans are so exciting! What a fun year this will be! Davy is a treasure!

Anonymous

Davey is such a wealth of knowledge and information, so interesting. Really enjoyed this.

Anonymous

Are you still thinking about creating a moon garden? I think that would be so lovely. Also, I love the idea of planting a laburnum walk. Have you seen photos of Nancy Lancaster's garden? She had the most stunning laburnum trees with gorgeous underplanting.

Anonymous

I’m not sure what the light is right for, but aspen or birch or white flowering trees around the back of the chapel would be so pretty.

Anonymous

Bravo, Davy! How inspiring to kibitz on your professional interview with the owners of La Lande. Best wishes as you balance logical sequence and most desired/necessary improvements. Beautiful. Please consider semi -permeable pavement blocks for the car park so It could function as pasture when not needed for events. (with shoveling for no-poo walking!). Might be good to position a lighting connection near the parking area.

Anonymous

This was so fascinating!

Anonymous

As a long range planner myself, it is so exciting to see long-term plans being set up for the grounds of La Lande! Davy is a real gem and he is a huge asset in making those plans a reality. I had several suggestions as I watched: 1) the labyrinth that I suggested above, possibly near the chapel. 2) making sure there is adequate water sourcing for all the garden areas. Whether by irrigation or hoses, all those plantings will need regular water to become established and then ongoing. 3) When Stephanie mentioned having areas in the gardens that had specific short-term visual/scented interests, like the laburnum, it is also important to include trees and shrubs that have multi-season interests. Many people ignore the beauty that certain spring or summer blooming plants can bring to the winter garden, through colorful structure of branches. Red or yellow twig dogwood is one example, and Japanese maples provide incredible spring and summer color which changes to glorious autumn color. 4) I’ll admit that I’m very excited at the possibility of restoring the mill house. It would be fascinating to see it as a folly where one could escape to read and get away. I’m excited to see all the projects begin for this year, as I prepare to begin one of my own; installing new flooring in the bedroom.

Anonymous

I love all of these ideas!! The garden rooms especially are a favorite idea of mine. Like many others in these comments I would love to see the night garden Stephanie spoke of earlier come to life as it is a unique idea that would be so beautiful to see. I do have an idea for if you have a garden room on a slope. I remember once seeing a fountain that was gently terraced with a walkway along it. It is rectangular in shape and would bisect the room. I think it would be great for the sightline and would allow for a link between two different levels.

Anonymous

Exciting plans. I am also looking forward to the chapel night garden - I assume that was included as one of the items on the to-do list.

Anonymous

So interesting hearing about the lake, like the clay bottom and how to make it work once you can refill it, so fascinating. And seeing the historical maps is really cool too. Can't wait to see what happens in the future!

Anonymous

Me too Julie. I asked on FB a couple of times but never received an answer. Love the history of this castle.

Anonymous

I hope that Capability Davy prepares a formal programme of works that 'need ' to b e done before the 'wants'. Nothing worse than digging up garden beds/lawns to lay irrigation pipes or whatever. I love the idea of a knot garden with the small fountain in the centre perhaps. Such a long list and that's just the outside.

Anonymous

Such an interesting discussion with Davy. Exciting times ahead. One thought for the garden and amphitheatre area. Thinking ahead to when functions are held. Could a natural toilet function be positioned somewhere for guests. I remember you all using Selmars camper when you had bonfires. If something sympathetic could be built it would be useful when you have gatherings further away from the chateau.

Anonymous

It is because of exclusive glimpses like these that I am a patron! Thank you for sharing the whole process. Now to fund it all! What about merch? Are you still considering that? Merchandise with Steve’s beautiful logo and St Cecelia’s face? Stationary sets of Michael pott’s photography, tote-bags, and apparel. I would love to have a patron vlog about how successful the wrapping paper sale was and if/when we can look forward to wearing our support of the chateau and how it could be cost affective enough to support the chateau.

Anonymous

great Idea and also a bar area or food truck like they have at Dick and Angels x

Anonymous

This was absolutely fantastic, it is all very exciting.

Anonymous

I loved listening to Davy. He really does know what he’s talking about. Such exciting times 😊.

Anonymous

Seeing the maps was quite interesting Davey has done a great job so far and he is very knowledgeable I would like to also see a modern edge to the garden to reflect 2021 in the form of an art installation ( in the lawn area in front of terrace) This could also be a tribute to Stephs father with his art work featured in the garden ( obviously recreated on Perspex panels or in the orangerie 🍊) it would also be good if Davey could create a digital “walk through” to show what it would be like when finished

Anonymous

Thank you, Stephanie, Davy and Michael for sharing your planning session. I found it to be very interesting especially regarding how the layer of clay was used to seal the bottom of the lakes and the laws governing France’s waterways. I am a firm believer in dreaming very big dreams. And then work towards them in practical terms. Continuing to nurture and pour life into Laland, will always bring about a positive result. And will continue to bring the right people and resources just at the right time! (As we all have witnessed already!) Wonderful adventures ahead!....PS I am really missing Isabelle. 🌟💜

Anonymous

Davy certainly is your very own ‘Capability Brown’ ....he is so calm & very importantly on your wavelength Stephanie ( apart from the statues!🤣) & so thorough too! Your very nature draws like-minded people to you which is wonderful. How generous of you to share this planning meeting with us - I have loved it ...& yes I had to have two cups of tea through it too! Xx

Maria Soberanis

Water is a good point. Like the electricity, that probably needs to be established first.

Anonymous

Absolutely loved this. Fascinating

Anonymous

Very informative, I really enjoyed listening to all your ideas. What luck to have the talented Davy on board!

Anonymous

Master Davey at work and passionately love what he does and so ever knowledgeable. Princess Stephanie for the magical and beautiful plan to have the chateau in its glory! Courtier Michael for the supporting role to have the plans and ideas to come into fruition. The illusive Nick’s idea of the maze or where it should be. Thank you for sharing the ideas and thoughts and looking forward as it unfolds! Hurrah for LaLande!💕

Anonymous

Love the idea of having wisteria and laburnum, but not together, with the new maps, you should be able to show that you have, or i should say that LaLande has always had a lake or two, the outdoor pool will be wonderful, and all the areas will be fab, and wind you down to some peaceful area, i think you were trying to think of a folly, type area, so wonderful just to sit in, peace and quite, to get away from it all, have some quite time to reflect and relax.

Anonymous

Good work from Davy. I'm not a fan of the maze. A waste of space, too much maintenance and not good visually. I definitely heard Michael say 'cricket pitch' at the 50 minute mark. Top man! That will also enable croquet. Lots to look forward to.

Laura & Jack

I’m a planner and this video made me super happy! Seems like you’ve got the right team there. So exciting to put all dreams down on paper, prioritizing them and starting to tick off the ones done. Hoping to see the progress made when we come later this year (fingers crossed).

Anonymous

I love all the plans, almost😊 i really don’t like the idea of a beautiful old place like Lalande having a swimmingpool. It will look artifical and out of place In the lovely Wooded and farmed area. Also it is not needed i think, when you can Swim In the natural pool, the coming lake or the streams . I also Wonder If you might have to put a fence or something around it, to preventiv kids and animals felling in. ❤️

Anonymous

It’s great to hear all the possible plans for the garden. Have you thought about people being able to sponsor things, such as a tree or a shrub?

Anonymous

I like the idea of the maze. Having stayed at Hampton Court I spent hours wandering around getting lost (even thou I knew the secret of the maze) then sitting triumphantly in the middle hearing all the laughter of unseen others trying to find their way out. With ever changing guest at the chateau they too would be able to gat lost for no reason other then to have fun.

Anonymous

Fascinating to be a fly on the wall to listen in to these early planning stages for the land around Lalande. If you want some inspiration for garden rooms Stephanie then look af Hidcote garden in the Cotswolds UK ,a National Trust property. They have lots of garden rooms but you'll be able to see the kind of thing that works. There are lots of different levels too in the garden as well as some wilder areas to the periphery . Thank you Davy,Stephanie and Michael.

Anonymous

I loved it when we had goals. Even if it took a while to get there. Can we come up with 1 for $24k??

Anonymous

Completely enjoyed this video and was wishing the whole time that all your subscribers could also here of the plans. I feel blessed to be part of the group that has access to this content. Thanks so much Stephanie as you have opened up a new world to many. Did you ever in your life imagine this is were life would lead you??!!

Anonymous

With electricity in the greenhouse, you could prolong your growing season with the addition of heaters and keep Isobel warm on cold days! The ability to water throughout the property is imperative to have the ability to properly maintain the gardens. The survey should also be able to save you some funds on correct placement of plumbing for this purpose.

Anonymous

Don't forget the orchard!

Anonymous

The thing is that guests want them and you can increase room rents when you have one tho they could use the natural swimming area as a draw.

Anonymous

Incredibly interesting! It’s good to have pie in the sky because your feet are on the ground. Some of these goals seem fairly achievable and affordable. And that feeling of progress keeps you going.

Anonymous

“A little progress every day adds up to big results.” - Satya

Anonymous

I would at this stage of lake situation consider production of electricity from the watermill for households and a geothermal system from the lake, so you become self-sufficient. the possibility of solid HEAT and power throughout the castle.... and also so guests in winter can enjoy LaLande. The orangeri outside the kitchen would have high prio too for me! You have great taste and great people around. I is going to be great!!!

Anonymous

I loved this! I would love if you added Selmar’s idea - an open area pavilion large enough for dancing or beautiful dinners. That would be splendid and so romantic in all seasons.

Anonymous

As another garden component, I'm still rooting for a sunken garden in the dry moat! Also, for the covered shelter for rainy days, perhaps when you eventually restore the boat house it could be enlarged to include space for a few rocking chairs? That way you can enjoy not only the rain on the roof, but also the lovely droplets in the beautifully restored lake :)

Anonymous

Could the restored mill be purposed as an art studio/ photography studio as opposed to using attic space? So glad Davy has found the chateaux as a passion project.

Anonymous

I simply loved this! I would love to see more of this type of video where you get into the details of projects. Davy is a keeper!

Anonymous

I can’t wait to see the plans . Davy put his heart and soul into obtaining and communicating all the information he gathered for the meeting. Thanks Davy

Anonymous

Stephanie and Davy, thank you for sharing your thought process and plans for the restauration of the chateau grounds. Absolutely fascinating and exiting to be part of this brain storm. Your serious stewardship of the chateau at large throughout the years with limited means however limitless tenacity is awe inspiring. I’m so happy for your growing supporter base enabling you transform your and your father’s vision into reality. Good luck and all the best! Good things come to good and patient people!

Anonymous

Sounds amazing!! X

Anonymous

So enjoyed listening to all the plans for the future...How exciting for you Stephanie...YEAH!! IT SsHAPPENING.... Cant wait ti follow you on your journey ahead

Anonymous

What a knowledgeable person Davy is! You are very lucky to have him

Anonymous

My thoughts on the Garden are a walk though garden in the dry moat, rockery stile planting, A night garden. Wild life friendly planting, possible a water meadow. No1 project is fix the heating :-) Great video Si.

Anonymous

Wow, I loved this video. I really felt part of the conversation. Henri has brought you Davy, n'est-ce pas?

Anonymous

Loved these ideas, especially the parterre garden and laburnum walk. How about a croquet / boules lawn.

Anonymous

This is going to be so beautiful! Don´t forget about the island in the lake! The boathouse could be some kind of pavillion, where it would be nice to spend time, when it is raining or the sun burns down in summer? it would also be wonderful, if you find some space on your land that you give back to nature? there are different projects like this, but I am most familiar with "we are the ark" which was started in Ireland. Maybe you woul like to look it up, since you are becoming Irish ;) https://wearetheark.org/

Anonymous

I just love the idea of garden rooms

Jeanie Allison

Isn’t it lovely that Davie is now a part of the La Lande team. It is a perfect fit!👍🏻

Anonymous

Wonderful planning session. Well done! I'm so happy the mill can be restored. I look forward to hearing more about that in the future. You didn't mention the island in the lake, with a beautiful gazebo. Has that idea been scrapped? Also, Selmar's lovely glass pavillion for garden parties with, of course, lots of dancing. There's a clearing in the woods, that can even be seen from above on Google maps. Would that be an appropriate place for a gazebo, dance pavillion, or secret garden? One last question, can the towers next to the lake be restored? I know very little is left of the original ones, basically just a footprint, but it would be so beautiful to see them standing tall next to the lake again. I hope the big January Clear Out is going well. Looking forward to your next post. <3

Anonymous

Stephanie, I’m always trying to figure out what is behind the little curtain that’s between Theodore next to the blue China dresser and the window😂 just being noisey 😂😅🤣 that was such an interesting video with the old maps of Lalande area too 🐨💕

Anonymous

I love hearing all the planning details. It excites the part of my brain that loves projects, renovations, problem solving and organization (nerd alert!) I could listen to you two discuss the nitty gritty of the plans all day. It's so exciting. The whole time you were saying "what else does a Chateau need?" I was yelling at my screen "des bosquets! Des bosquets!". Garden rooms are such a must! Exciting times!

Anonymous

Love these planning meetings. Davy is wealth of knowledge. Thanks for letting us listen in. :) That hour went fast!

Anonymous

Please look at this pool as an inspiration for your "artificial swimming pool". https://bloedelreserve.org/reflection-pool/ It is a very beautiful garden room, contemplative. It would be useful to guests (as you have a small number planned for your B&B) and also splendid when not occupied by swimmers.

Anonymous

As a revelation of personal interest, I would love to visit a home with a terrain for petanque or other boules. The game is such fun, suitable for all ages, and can be enclosed in a garden room with borders designed for strollers having no interest in gaming - dual purpose, valuable whether gaming or not.

Anonymous

It’s so lovely to be able to see what the plans are for the future in great depth! Such a lot to look forward to! It will all come together eventually and it will be perfect I’m sure. X

Anonymous

Exciting times ahead

Anonymous

Davy’s amount of knowledge is greatly admirable!! He is awesome! This was so fascinating to watch. I learned quite a lot! thank youuuu xx

Anonymous

Dream big Stephanie! You are allowed to dream big! 🥰Exciting times🥰 What about the area along the lake near the boat house? Perhaps a promenade along the lake 💕 and a bridge to the island 💕 ***See episode 2 of Bridgerton around 33:12 😊

Anonymous

I was waiting somebody to suggest the swimming pool to be built like a Roman Bath house. Most of it being just a pool + some small rooms for the showers and for changing. Underfloor heating?

Anonymous

I love all the ideas and planning! Here’s my 2 cents; Power and water everywhere, big trees for future generations, big containers that look beautiful with or with plants, a bocce ball court, alfresco dining areas....oh what fun! What ever you come up with is going to be spectacular!

Anonymous

I love the idea of the orangery just off the kitchen. Such a elegant addition to the Chateau. A beautiful long table to dine and host parties in all seasons, a cosy area with sofas at the far end. Beautiful large windows all around. Please bump this up the list of priorities. X

When you were discussing swimming in the natural pond I was picturing Mr Darcy aka Colin firth diving in fully clothed and emerging with wet shirt. Who is Mr Darcy at La Lande? Is it Michael Pots? 😂

Anonymous

I found this discussion fascinating and exciting! I hope to visit La Lande some day to see all these marvelous things!

Anonymous

I hope that tying it all together includes master design plans like blueprints. And that they’re preserved so that 100 years from now people will see what the original vision was. Magic sparks magic and the gardens are going to be so beautiful. ❤️🇨🇦

Anonymous

Steph, did we forget the boat house? Would that be part of the English Style Park are Michael was describing? Perhaps leading to the more dense forest, but imagine a beautiful glass dome or something!

Anonymous

What about walking trails for the guests to explore the woods and grounds?

Found this all fascinating, Davy is a font of knowledge!

Anonymous

I noticed how Davy said it was "relatively easy" for him to do all the prep work BUT i would like to APPRECIATE that it was so for Davy because he is who he is and already has sooo much knowledge and experience - such a gift to Lalande- would not have been "easy" for most others -it is so wonderful when there can be such mutual co-creation - for Davy the opportunity to explore all his wisdom in a real physical large project and for Stephanie & LL to have that work happen and so holistically. it really is a joy to witness the process - like the last planning session we saw - I LOVE seeing this part - makes me really feel a part of things and VERY encouraging for me to continue being a Patron xx

Of all the garden plans, I am most looking forward to the Garden Rooms. You once mentioned exotic themes for the rooms, such as a Persian Garden Room—which is quite intriguing. Your idea for l'orangerie off the kitchen sounds like a dream come true! I hope you will consider moving it higher up the priority list of your projects, as the kitchen is the heart of the chateau and this will be a space that everyone will enjoy spending time in daily. Imagine having your morning coffee or tea in the light-filled glass room, while still being very much a part of the kitchen. Citrus trees in large terra cotta pots would be lovely in l'orangerie. It is a treat to listen to someone with such impressive expertise in their chosen profession. It was fascinating to learn from Davy.

A propos des garden rooms/parterre etc, I just remembered visiting Arundel Castle 2 yrs ago on a trip to the UK & the gardens are fantastic. Here's the link for ideas https://www.arundelcastle.org/gardens/

Anna Ibarra

That may be so nicer over the maze. It seems that it would require more upkeep. If not over by the chapel or by the paid rooms overlooking the empty area, moot side.

Anna Ibarra

Totally agree and I had thought that LaLande could use a room of that nature, saw another chateau on ETTC DIY and they had a beautiful l’lorangerie use as a eating area. It would be ideal to move this up the list! And even have a pass thru window from the wash kitchen area. Well a proper one as dishes could be pass thru after meals for the LaLande team. As this will be their room.

Anna Ibarra

What a great meetings if the minds this was. Allowing us to sit in, and watch Davy do his thing. He is a wealth of knowledge, and very serious at that. Stephanie couldn’t be surrounded by more influential friends to help her reach her dreams to take LaLande up to where it should be among stately chateaus.

Anna Ibarra

It was, as to some of us we didn’t even think of that. How this was done back when. The historical maps was just amazing to me and see how they kept great history and for present to keep the integrity of the chateau and restore its beauty and add modern technology.

You forgot to mention designated Garden Party zone!? 😋

Georgette Jones

My gosh Davy really knows his stuff ❗️It is going to be such fun watching the changes, very interesting about the clay lake bottom....is the stream you were talking about going dry the one we see in the woods❓if so please do not let it change❣️

Now that amount is so close to 24k usd.. Will there be any new goal?

Davy is a true professional in his field. Happy you all have that excellent guidance as the LaLande team works together to make it the best it can be. 🤗

Anonymous

This is wonderful, pulling it all together. Davy is a wonderful fountain of knowledge and very handy to have to guide you.

Davy -does- know his stuff, that's for sure! What detailed work, so impressive. That's wonderful this is all happening for Lalande...and that you have someone to help you navigate away from dodgy contractors. It's good you and Lalande are protected and covered. And that Mr. Potts was there for the planning, too. I loved his smile at your garden rooms as he went out of shot...haha...sneaky Michael! One never knows, garden rooms may abound one day...my friend did mention that much of this will take a lot of maintenance. I'd think at least 3 gardeners. I think more workshop spaces should be built-out in the mill and other areas, maybe even a building in town. Esalen in Big Sur is a hot springs property built by 2 men, and can hold 4 different workshops/courses/symposiums at any given time. If Lalande had the workshop spaces spread out then more people could come and enjoy, but not overload the main building. And that level of workshop traffic could justify a whole lot of gardeners for garden rooms and mazes! I think eventually, as you get bigger and bigger (which I believe you will) a little shop space could be rented in the village too, for Marie's creations and your Lalande creations. Spreading out the Lalande offerings and spaces long term could be really fun...it would probably actually create jobs for locals, because you would need cleaners and cooks for the different spaces, and the workshop students could interact with the French locals and see all the delicious food and French ways. All just ideas...you see facility spaces like this built all over places like Costa Rica, they are really good jobs for families and they have a happy life. But how Costa Rica has built this workshop economy around health and wellness (yoga, surf, raw food, etc) has created a little ecosystem of the Napa Effect, where people come from all over the world to, well, pursue health. Lalande could stay with the music, art, cooking, decorations, Lalande garden tours, flowers. One thing a place like Costa Rica shows is that if people have beautiful spaces to work in with good bosses where they can provide for their kids and families....people are happy, and the tourists enjoy going there to witness and grow the good life and happiness.

The one argument I would make in favor of a heated shower out at the natural pool is that then people could do hot/cold dunks out there, a la' Scandinavia. The hot/cold baths are supposed to be invigorating for health and two of the 6 key factors Harvard researcher David Sinclair has tied to longevity of life in his longevity studies the last 20 years. They've actually figured out how to reprogram 80 yo cells to be 20 yo...and even regrow crushed organs. All futuristic :) But it would be cool if somewhere at Lalande you had the hot/cold space as an option for multiple people.

It sounds like the French water police have done an insanely excessive amount of damage to your lake. If there are enough tree root systems that have punctured your clay membrane and you have to re-clay the entire 5 hectares of lake....that's so much money. That's TOO much money. You know, somewhere in there, is some masters or PhD student who REALLY messed up on that survey. There's either a licensed hydrologist or environmental engineer who signed off on the work someone did that allowed your lake to be drained in error. And the repair costs look to be inordinate. Those who are licensed are supposed to be professionals...and need to be made aware if their work was faulty and caused property owners hundreds of thousands of euros to fix. Man....yeah...engineers get fired for those kinds of mistakes. This is why P.E.s in the US get paid so much, signing off on everyone's work. Your French water police REALLY messed up. Especially after you add up the lawyer's fees...you should see if there's anything your city or the French environmental agency can do for you because of the wrongful damage.

Anonymous

I have wondered about that. The whole thing seemed to have happened under duress.I know it's delicate as Stephanie has to live there, but it is something worth looking into.

Applause to you Davy and your profession, doing an outstanding job on research of Chateau de la Lande! I really enjoyed this , finding all of this so educationally and fascinating to see and hear. Exciting times are indeed ahead, and finally underway. Every plan sounds amazing, and deserving of this Chateau. Stephanie remember though with all these improvements and wonderful additions that are to take place to allow for funds for all maintenance and its upkeep, for this is just as important, especially with anything that Mother Nature is involved with. Dan the Man is going to need much more help in the future I think! Oh it is so exciting!!!

Anonymous

Also Stephanie you mention the Laburnum trees I think? Although very beautiful, I have always heard that they are poisonous? I'm not a arborist but something to look into.

Anonymous

As others have said, how fortunate to have Davy and his wealth of knowledge. I just had a couple of quick thoughts. As others have said, please consider a labyrinth by the chapel. It could go where you're having to take all the trees down, which seems very lemons to lemonade to me. If it is stone and has simple plantings, it would be very low maintenance, and a nice meditative addition until the maze and garden rooms can grow in. I really appreciate the amphitheater idea. As the B&B business will always be limited by space, music evenings and workshops are excellent ways to make money that don't have to be tied to the nonprofit/restoration. I can't help but think of the one in A Little Chaos. So charming. The same goes for an outdoor covered space. A possible money generator while providing for lovely social events. One last thought. It might be very helpful/interesting to see if a Lidar image of the area has been created. Sometimes they are public, but I'm not sure as I couldn't find one with a quick Google search. Davy or your surveyor might be able to access a non public one. It allows you to see the topography of the surface without any plants on it. It makes is very easy to see where features are in the landscape, like old towers, moats, drainages, etc. If one has been done, it should be easy to get, and could help you plan.

over $24,000! Yea!

$24,000 woot woot! LaLande so deserves this!!

I'm on team Davey , no statues ,my compromise would be to have them made with the felled trees and situated in the woods and just keep the small but very pretty one on the terrace and get some more stone benches to form a circle around it x

Thank you Stephanie & Davy for sharing that discussion 😊 as it was your dream of having a lake again Stephanie that made me decide to become a Patreon last April 💦

These types of videos are the reasons I became a patron☺️. Fascinating, informative and such exciting content! Davy is a marvel in his element - so knowledgeable! Thank you for sharing this xx

A labyrinth and a folly . . .

I’m so excited to watch the changes progress at Lalande. I’m thrilled to part of it all.

This is one of your all-time best videos. Thank you. It's really nice to see the relationships of all the areas around the outside of Lalande (sometimes we viewers lose track). Learning how to manage your forest, lawns, water and gardens is a very large task. I hope you are either paying Davy a nice fat fee, or letting him use you for advertising his skills.

Anonymous

So much to keep you going for years, Davy certainly has put a lot of thought into this all.🍾🥂💕

Anonymous

A really interesting video, just think, the gardens and wider grounds at Lalande are only ever going to be more beautiful and with imagination, good advice and the magic wand of patreon it all started in in the otherwise dreadful year of2020!

Anonymous

Well done, Capability Davy! You've come up with great ideas for the garden!

Love these planning videos!

Practically my favorite video so far. Love the meaty ones. Can we please know a little more about the geothermal heating system? Fascinating. How does it work? Where is it?

So I’ve thought about this over and over since viewing it 2 weeks ago........because one thing Stephanie mentioned in passing regarding a dream of adding a conservatory/l’orangerie to the kitchen. If that could be done and accommodate the kitchen table and chairs in the new space + other things of course. One thing the kitchen lacks is a work top for food prep ...... anytime someone does food prep they are having to lean over the table. If the add-on was possible then the space where the table is now could be a counter height “island”. The work top could be something easily cleaned, can handle constant use. THEN on the range/cooker side of the island could be massive storage with pull out shelves........it could hold skillets, sauce pans, Dutch ovens, baking sheets, lids for pots and pans, mixing bowls and all sundry elements used for cooking. Above those pull outs could be a row of drawers the length of the island........it could be used for storing measuring spoons, measuring cups, wooden spoons, spatulas and on and on. Everything needed to just open a drawer to get what’s needed .... rolling pins and so many things. This also may eliminate the need to have a ladder for things in the washing up room. One section of the storage side of the island could hold things on the shelf in the washing up room......bowls, and whatever is used a lot from in there.

part 2......

on the other side of the “island” could be some shallow storage behind doors. And the work top could extend out to accomodate stools. The island could be designed to look old but very organized and functional. It would solve a lot of storage issues for everyday items for prep, cooking and serving. I’ve thought of this almost everyday because it’s what I would do. The add on could be a lovely place to dine, sit and have tea, work on a laptop etc. And could be decorated beautifully with plants, a couple comfy chairs and perhaps a small wood stove for winter heating.

Anonymous

I know that Stephanie said adding on is way off in the future but in doing an odd on then all sorts of storage issues for the kitchen would be accomplished. I know LaLanders may not be able to read all comments here but at least I put it out there. I can see it in my minds eye all the time. Also putting the cook books way up high needing a ladder seems inconvenient. Just an opinion. :)

Oh my goodness, what a lot of wonderful planning! I learned a lot from Capability Davy. :)

Anonymous

This was SO interesting! I love all the research and what the grounds used to look like! I CANNOT WAIT to see all the great ideas Davy has put into motion. There's just something magical about this particular Chateau, but I think more importantly it is the magic that Stephanie brings. You can feel her love and happiness! I am very far away physically but Stephanie you do such an amazing job of making us feel like we are part of daily life there. I think in light of what Michael said you were facing on some awful site... don't lose hope that you are making a difference in people's lives and that for me personally this channel and helping in my small way is one of my greatest pleasures!

Thank you for sharing this planning meeting with Davey! It’s all so exciting and his broad knowledge from geothermal heating to fish habitats is amazing!

Wow the garden is going to be absolutely amazing once done! Thank you for posting this, I love to follow along.

I enjoyed this so much! Fabulous to see the historical research Davey found as well as hear about the garden areas planned. So many wonderful ideas and for the future too! Thank you for sharing.

Don't know if anyone else pointed it out already, but the small lake next to Le Boué is very clearly also already on the Cassini map. It is spelled Le Bouex there. It looks to me you can't really see that, because you are using the Geoportail (https://www.geoportail.gouv.fr/) version of both the Cassini and the Etat-major maps. There are higher resolution versions available of both. On Cassini you can then clearly see the small lake east of Le Bouex and the water mill north of the big lake. And on the Etat-major map you can see the old outline of the castle (with the part extruding from the main entrance) and the two former towers. Downloads available here https://remonterletemps.ign.fr/ (be aware that the Etat-major one for the region is 100MB).
