One of the technologies I've been using in developing some recent builds is called Photogrammetry. This technology processes 3D shapes by interpreting patterns in a series of image files. For example, imagine if you take 20 pictures of the same object from different angles. Photogrammetry technology will look for patterns in those images and produce a 3D mesh of the object or environment.

It's a great technology and - best of all - it's becoming readily available on smart phone devices. Recently, I used an app called Metascan to take pictures of my Arrma Voltage RC chassis because I am preparing to make a custom RTV. Metascan produced a 3D mesh that - while rough - gave me an accurate representation to design 3D printable parts around.

More recently, I tried scanning my Kenner Firehouse playset - it's a much more complex object but Metascan was able to give me a workable mesh that I could use for general dimensions in 3D modeling software. I also tested an app called Polycam with similar results. Both of these apps also support LiDAR scanning on supported devices - another powerful reality-capture technology.

These apps are typically free to try but do require a subscription to download your 3D model as OBJ or other formats with textures.

Stay tuned for updates on how I'll be using my scans of the Kenner Firehouse to create some new parts and accessories for modifying this classic playset!
