Is this the Netflix version or the original version without all the edited dialogue etc?

They're watching the Netflix dub I prefer the original dub there's just some weird translations in the Netflix dub like using children instead of child to identify for the kids also I prefer the original voice actors and if they go to do the Eva movies it's going to be weird having them switch from the new va's to the original va's

The cultural impact this legendary anime had on the Japanese industry is worth knowing, many tropes (obviously not all) in modern anime were inspired by this show.

To explain the comments talking about the specific English dub that you’re currently watching, there’s actually a whole controversy with it. Originally it was dubbed in either the late 90’s or the early 2000’s by ADV films, then they started releasing the Rebuilds which is a remake that goes in a completely different plot direction. It was dubbed by Funimation and they got back some of the original cast. During the release of the 3rd movie a representative from the studio behind the rebuilds saw a fan sneak peak during an anime convention of the English dub. There was lots of giggling and people chatting during the movie which is a pretty common occurrence for anime screenings, but the representative not realizing it thought that Funimation was messing up the dub so the Japanese company made them completely redo the entire dub with a translation from one of their translators. Among the changes was changed to be more like how it was in Japan. ADV and Funimation changed Third Children to Third Child because that makes more sense in English but the Japanese rights holders made them change it back. Then when Netflix bought the rights, they used the translation by the studio in Japan that owns Evangelion and recast the entire project. Fans were pissed and started to crap on the new dub in response. There are a lot of terminology changes in the new dub, and it’s also more faithful to the original Japanese but sometimes at the expense of sounding natural in English, so if you see people complaining about how bad the dub you’re watching is that’s why. Personally, I think both are on par with each other. The original dub started out sounding really rough and not good, but by the end of the show turned out absolutely fantastic, while the new dub starts off much better, but doesn’t ever get as good as the original dub eventually got. However, I do love this version of the dub as well.

Oh noo it's the Netflix dub sadge

The Quadfather

The Netflix dub version is so good. I watched that version the first time I saw the show and loved it. You guys have been in the anime world long enough to know how insufferable the “sub only” crowd is. They’re going to do what they do best(be insufferable), so pleas just try to enjoy this amazing show and not let the stupid comments get to you. This Netflix dub has fantastic voice acting and is a great way to watch the show for the first time. Hope you enjoy.

I remember you guys mentioning NGE, and you guys also hinted at considering Gurren Lagann. Please oh please for the love of god watch GL after this! You’ll need the overwhelming hope and positivity GL brings after NGE gives you depression(in a good way).

Didn't see this coming ._. I don't think I can relive this torture show lol

Fatherlord

I hate this anime but there's some parts to it I really, really like. Really I just hate how frustrating some of the characters are and the ending, but I think it's still worth watching for the impact it had. So I can't wait to see the rest of the normies reaction to this, regardless if I hate Evangelion

Kero20042

I'm happy to see Micky nerding out for the animation. You're gonna see some really amazing work. For me, it's the backgrounds that are absolutely STUNNING. 90s anime BG paintings were something else. The visuals are really what drew me into the story.

Thank you for Eva!!! I've been dying for more channels to watch this. Even without liking it or not it is such an important anime, it's influence can be seen everywhere.

bondbond53

It's so interesting to see someone new's reaction to Evangelion. You either end up disliking it or loving it. I for one absolutely adore every single thing about this show.

Zenanarch

yooo what eva i cant wait bowl hit then Eva

Ricardo Obregon

Wait what is this ? Really you guys starting Evangelion, dont toy with me like you guys did on food wars and angel beats. Evangelion is a MindFK Anime but damn if its not one hell of a ride. Wooooo another amazing choice for reaction normies. watching ASAP!

With Mickey talking about how sick the animation is, I now want them to watch some of my favorite late 80's, early 90's stuff, Black Magic M-66, Appleseed, Riding Bean, and of course, Bubblegum Crisis. A couple of really cool Mecha OVAs are Dangaioh, and Hades Project Zeorymer. Lots of cool fights.

Saifu

Hope they will also check out the Rebuild of Eva movies afterwards.

flexluthor

I agree with Mickey & Chris about 80s/90s/early 2000s anime. There’s just something so nostalgic and vibey about the older look. The colors, the animation..new anime is definitely more fluid and all but old anime has an unmatched feel to it

Hope you'd consider switching to the 90s ADV dub, or original JP with subs - not only are there controversial translations and the actors are much flatter, but the Netflix dub didn't get the licensing to the show's instrumental covers of "Fly Me to the Moon," which are the series' end credit themes. Covers of the theme are used in the show in several crucial emotional beats, instances where Netflix just replaces it with other tracks.

(The ADV cast is also the one used in the dub of the Rebuild movies, if you ever get to watching those after the show!)

LETS GOOO I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS FOR U GUYS TO GET ON THIS

Benjamin Donahue

Oh shit just noticed you guys started this one. I actually rewatched this a couple years ago and am happy to say I actually liked it MORE as an adult than when I was in highschool, so can't wait to see your takes on it. One note on when Mikey said "anime dad vibes", being that Gendou Ikari is quite possibly the actual architype for the whole "anime dad trope" (at least I don't know of one anywhere near as known predating this show)

FUN FACT.... This anime actually inspired Honkai 3rd Impact (a play on the anime's 2nd impact), which loosely leads into GENSHIN Impact. Not sure of the relativity between both games. I just know that the lead developer was heavily inspired by NGE and even based Paemon off a mascot they created for Honkai 3rd, which takes direct inspiration from NGE, mainly Rei.

As someone who went into this almost completely blind, thinking that it was “ shows that were hyped up the hell back in the day, but haven’t really aged all that well compared to modern contemporary is”, and the boy was I wrong. Have to say this is one of the greatest shows of all time, both in terms of Anime, Tv, hell maybe even media. I hope you enjoy as this show goes from kind of weird, but interesting to “ really dark, like oh my God, how did this even get made like shockingly dark” to “fuck is going”. Also, fun tip in the future: the final episodes and the movie happen concurrently so keep that in mind as the story goes off the fucking rails. Have I said the F word more than I normally should? Yes , but that is only because I absolutely love the show. 10/10 would watch with anyone just to get the reaction.
