Volcanic Unrest in the Azores (Patreon)
Content
On the long and thin island of Sao Jorge in the Azores (owned my Portugal) an ongoing earthquake swarm is occurring. These swarms are unusually energetic and have already produced >70 earthquakes, many of which were large enough to be felt by the island's residents. The issue lies in that I could not confirm the presence of a single seismometer or other GPS sensor on the island. In other words, the data on earthquake locations is likely originating from sensors on other islands. Therefor, I cannot make a firm conclusion if this is simply tectonic or volcanic unrest. However, the last time a similar series of events occurred (1964) it resulted in a submarine volcanic eruption. I have mapped the land volcanic eruptions which have occurred since the 1500s where the orange arrows represents the path of pyroclastic flows.
