The Mount Stromboli volcano is well known for its regular moderately explosive eruptions which eject bombs of lava alongside minor amounts of ash. These explosions recur every 10-20 minutes, and are referred to as “Strombolian” eruptions. Thus, people incorrectly think of Stromboli as an only slightly dangerous volcano. In truth, it is more likely than any other regional volcano to produce a tsunami. In the last 10,000 years it has produced at least 5 such tsunamis from partial summit collapses, one of which effected all of what is now Italy in 1343.
