In 1932, a little known volcano in remote Chile called Cerro Azul began an explosive eruption.
Note: this volcano is not the similarly named Cerro Azul volcano in the Canary Islands.
The plinian eruption which occurred carved out a 700 meter wide and 150 meter deep crater. In total, 9.5 km^3 of dacite tephra was ejected. The overall eruption is not well known simply because it didn’t reach VEI 6 status. It barely missed it.
I’m planning a future video on this volcano because it’s history is quite fascinating.
