The Ectomorphs are creatures that currently act as the primary antagonistic force of the Beyond Mortality setting.

Twisted and unnatural creatures, Ectomorphs exist in a variety of forms and types, all of them disgusting and distorted caricatures of the human form, with grossly exaggerated or malformed anatomy. There is no truly common set of characteristics to the Ectomorphs, but there are some generalized forms that have been identified - for example, the Tall Man boasts hideously elongated proportions, while the Bloated Specter have rotund and inflated torsos with shriveled, dangling limbs. Their one common attribute is their pale blue-glowing coloration, which Ectomorphs seem to uniformly possess.

Ectomorphs have a diffuse physical presence - at first they may appear fully intangible or semi-gaseous, passing through solid matter such as a wall (or a person) leaving behind only an unpleasant slimy liquid residue that eventually evaporates. At any moment however the Ectomorphs may suddenly develop a horrible solidity, battering and clawing at mortal victims, ripping with grossly inhuman strength and biting with grotesque deformed jaws.

Ectomorphs are not native to the material realm where mortals dwell. Instead, they intrude upon the world of mortals through dimensional rifts leading to some other extra-dimensional world. While openings into the Ectomorphs' realm may occur naturally through unknown esoteric principles, most fractures of this kind occur when humans misuse the power of Vril energy, primarily when technology that utilizes Vril energy malfunctions catastrophically. The mass-release of highly concentrated Vril energy can tear the veil between dimensions, allowing the Ectomorphs into our world.

Fortunately, while unfocused Vril energy seems to attract Ectomorphs, the Vril can be harnessed through technological weaponry to attack, damage, and disperse Ectomorphs, seemingly blasting them back into their constituent particles. Some applications of Vril-powered technology have resulted in devices that can repel and even entrap Ectomorphs, allowing for further study.

Some scholars of the Ectomorph claim to have proven that certain creatures possess glimmers of human-like intellect, seeming to react to stimuli as humans would. In one case, an Ectomorph presented with a stuffed toy bear was observed to cuddle it as a child might. Another Ectomorph was presented with a selection of clothing and was observed attempting to dress itself, perching a bowler hat atop its malformed head before struggling to fit itself into pants and shirt.

Some have postulated that this behavior is simply the Ectomorphs aping observed human behavior, but a rather more disturbing theory is that Ectomorphs somehow are humans, or former humans, transformed by some unknown eldritch process into their current monstrous state.

The Order of the Blue Flame is an organization of science-minded men and women devoted to exploring the nature of Vril energy and its applications for human benefit, and one of their foremost assumed responsibilities is utilizing their Vril-powered technology to combat the threat that Ectomorphs represent.

Given their extensive use of the very energy that seems to draw the Ectomorphs into our world, the Order of the Blue Flame will likely enjoy job security for some time.
