The problem with Chibnall is that he pinches other (better) writers ideas and scenes. For example, the scene with the earth swallowing people, along with the line 'the earth was hungry' was lifted wholesale from a Fifth Doctor story; while the Silurians themselves, and the plot of them living underground and wanting to retaliate was taken from the Third Doctor story 'The Silurians'. Perhaps because it wasn't written for Doctor Who,'Countrycide' (although kind of derivative) was way more entertaining.

one writer's "stealing" is another writer's very much appreciated reference to the past... people were just as angry with chibnall for referencing the past at one point of his writing for the show as they were for ignoring it at another point. the truth is: most people dislike chibnall because he turned the doctor into a woman, even the notion... 's all nonsense. chibnall is a great writer and his stories usually rock pretty hard.

'referencing' is fine;but a writer can only get away with that sort of thing for so long - too many instances, and words like 'plagiarism' will inevitably come to mind.

Doctor: “Excuse me, I’m making perfect sense. You’re just not keeping up.” Loved your reaction to that line. I’m sure you will have the occasion to use it sometime. I was never aware of the hostility toward Chibnall until recent years for reasons too spoiler-y to discuss. There has to be more to it than pinching ideas and scenes from old episodes because that describes almost every episode that I can think of. One of the ways in which I think Matt Smith differs from Eccleston and Tennant is that he talks TO rather than AT the supporting characters. This is when he’s not thinking out loud, rambling at breakneck speed, taking sudden digressions, arguing with himself. The severe tone the Doctor took with the boy’s mother felt personal like the Doctor saw something problematic in her character from the start. It’s actually a bit startling to hear him talking to her in that way. The Doctor stopped being clever and witty for a moment in order to leave no room for doubt or disagreement. He wanted the woman to HEAR him. It was personal.

Evan!!

The second of many stories that show how well Matt Smith acts off children. He just plays so well off them and treats them like adults, it's such a great way to engage with the young audience of the show.

Homaging a series history is important (if not,in fact, essential);but it's how it's done which is the key.In that regard,Chibnall doesn't so much 'pinch' ideas,as 'copy/paste' :D That being said,I certainly don't subscribe to the 'Bowlestrek philosophy' in the least. I just feel that he is the weakest of the 'big three' of the modern series,by quite some distance. A good illustration of this is 'Cold Blood';which plods along unexceptionally;until the final few minutes, when Moffat comes in and pulls the rug out from under our feet.

Yes! He seems to treat people as equals when he talks to them. Love it!

Meh. Very below average episode. I like some of the side characters such as Elliot, Nasreen and Tony but I don't really care much for the story tbh. The cliffhanger also feels very underwhelming.
