Great reaction. Isobel is one of those vampires we never get to know enough about. I have always suspected her reasons for turning were to protect Elena. She researched paranormal activity and it wouldn't have been hard to find out that Elena was Katherine's doppelganger. I'm sure John gave Isobel pictures of Elena over the years. We've already seen Elena be mistaken for Katherine, it makes her a target. I believe Isobel found out and thought the only way she could protect Elena from vampires was to become one herself. That's not a spoiler as it is only my theory based on her motherly protection at the end. When a vampire fully flips the switch, they are scary. They are really cold, Isobel hadn't flipped the switch, she'd just stopped herself feeling remorse. When people turn, they are still humans, but their instinct is to kill, they need to hurt people to survive, but imagine yourself feeling like that. That and grief are usually the main reasons for a vampire turning their emotions off. When they turn them on, they let them in gradually, which is where Damon was at when the show started. The longer they're off, the longer it takes to let them all back in. Some vampires will have them turned off for decades, and it takes years to let the emotions back in. The reason Damon has fallen for Elena is her compassion, which in his 170 years, he's never experienced before, even when he was human, Katherine was probably the closest. She makes him feel more human, he knows he's a better person around her. I'm not sure he was fully aware he was in love with her. Damon explained why he's still there, he cares about people in the town; right now that list is Stefan, Elena, Ric and Liz (Caroline's mum). When Damon cares about people, he is very protective of them. People hate Uncle John because he's annoying more than any other reason. If Jenna hates him, it's a good enough reason for most. He's a slimy creep. The mentality of vampires is better shown in S2 and your views may be severely tested regarding whether vampires are good or not. Seasons 2/3/4 & 6 of this show are widely regarded as the best. You'll see in the next episode why the tomb vampires need to die. Eagerly awaiting the next one.
