*cracks knuckles* You want insight into shipping? You'll get it. I'm a shipper and a half so I *really* understand what makes a good ship (at least for me). However, I'm chill and let people ship whatever they want even if I don't like it. (I still reserve the right to not like *topics* however.) The basis of a good ship is knowing that two people can mutually support each other no matter what. Ideally, they can understand at least some of what the other person's been through. It doesn't have to be 100%, of course; nobody can understand another person's pain entirely. They needed to be able to have healthy, open conversations with each other and not just shut down on the other. That will happen, of course, but they need to be able to talk about it later. They also need to be able to help each other grow in positive ways. Constantly tearing someone down or just shrugging them off will NOT contribute to a good relationship. Let me use my second major RWBY ship (via text-based roleplay) as an example. Monochrome or Weiss and Blake. Also keep in mind this goes into HEAVY headcanon and a non-canon-compliant alternate universe complete with different takes on characters. This is NOT an accurate representation of what a canon Monochrome ship would be. For me, these two are actually surprisingly similar to the point that they have almost identical pasts. Both come from a place where they were degraded, mistreated, their very identities treated as nothing. Both grew up in an echo chamber where some sort of radical ideals bounced around: humans are monsters that cause nothing but pain, Faunus are nothing but animals incapable of thoughts or feelings. Early in Weiss is racist af. But she doesn't know any better. It's her first time out of Atlas, away from the careful watch of her father. Blake has been out of the Fang for two years, but is still afraid of her shadow. She had support through Tukson (dude killed at the beginning of V2, expanded on his role in the story). Both of them think of themselves as nothing. They are riddled with anxiety about the world, thinking it nothing but dangerous. They think the family the other comes from means them nothing but harm. Schnees against Faunus, White Fang against Schnees. In some regards, they're right. But, when it comes to each other, nothing could be further from the truth. Blake's the first of the two to realise that they aren't so different. Seeing Weiss riddled with so much anxiety makes her understand the heiress' life hasn't been good. And so she slowly starts to reach out. She treats Weiss with nothing but respect and care. She can see herself in Weiss. She's forced to confront her own inner demons, not wanting to be hypocritical. She starts to return to her former self, the one before she was brainwashed by radical ideals. Sweet, kind, caring, supportive but *extremely* snarky with a dry wit. Loyal, stubborn, and so attuned to what people are thinking and feeling almost anybody is an open book for her. Weiss begins to lean on Blake because actually understands what's going on in her head. Weiss herself can't begin to comprehend it because mental health is highly taboo in Atlas (headcanon worldbuilding). She depends heavily on Blake's guidance as well as Yang's support (in the backrgound) to make sense of the world. She hasn't learned anything but Atlas' propaganda about the outside world until now. She's been told it's nothing but dangerous and people only want to hurt, extort, and use her for their own ends. Be it dust, cozying up to her father, or whatever she was taught to believe about others. Initially, Blake starts with all the power in the relationship. My personal worldbuilding has Atlas being very "traditional," ie any -ism/-phobia you name, it's ingrained into the culture. So Weiss is very compliant, never speaking up despite her own opinions. She struggles heavily with making her own decisions. However, Blake doesn't abuse that power over her. What she does is help equip Weiss with tools of discernment and coping with anxiety and fear. She helps her walk through panic attacks, hypervigilance, and anything else that accompanies PTSD because she's there too. She's had time to work through things a fair bit, but she still has a long way to go. She helps Weiss make sense of the emotions she's always just tried to ignore and push away. She just *understands* what it's like to come out of a horrible situation and deal with the after effects. She doesn't want Weiss to suffer like that. In time, Weiss starts standing on her own and starts doing the same for Blake. She can be a support when she needs a friendly ear. She can help her come down from flashbacks or panic attacks. She can tell when Blake's hiding something and calls her out on it. She makes her slow down when things are starting to overdo it. They grow from a very similar base *together*. They start to learn and how to best help the other even in their darkest moments. Where one stumbles and falls, the other's always there to pick her up. They both learn to communicate and process their feelings in a healthy way. They take interest in what the other does, no matter how minor. They both learn to build and respect boundaries for themselves and for the other. Some days remain hard, even ten years into their relationship. Nightmares are infrequent now, but some nights are just bad. Some days it can just be hard to get out of bed. But the other's there when that happens. Even if they're apart, they're just a call away. (Both take jobs post series that have them apart roughly half the year.) Even if that call can't come, they just tend to *know* when something's wrong with the other. Things start out unequally, but they grow equal in time.

re: Grimm Basically Grimm are stupid up until they've lived long enough. Instinctively all they do is want to destroy humanity. However, they're capable of learning. Those that have survived long enough understand to not attack humans. Going after one human or a small group of them will only bring more and, thus, their own destruction.

Meerah

As Dr. Oobleck states, the Goliaths (the giant elephant-like Grimm) lack hostility because they have adapted and learned over the years that killing one human will only bring more. This unusual restraint and awareness has allowed the Goliaths to survive, and makes them different than regular Grimm. Oobleck also notes that the Goliaths are never far from the kingdom's borders and seem to be "waiting." What they are waiting for is not clear, but I'm guessing they are waiting for the right chance to attack the humans. My theory is that Dr. Oobleck didn't ask Ruby why she became a huntress because the answer was obvious and pure: Ruby wants to a hero and save people. This need to preserve and protect life should be number one and is the defining nature of a good hunter and huntress.

Watching David go from Dr. Oobleck jest to Dr. Oobleck love is a journey we all took when we saw this episode.

Matt - that's what I like about editing too!

couldn't have said it better myself! Ruby practically radiates the qualities of a huntress and it shows in everything she does therefoore no question needed when actions speak louder than words.

My #1 top ship of not only RWBY, but all time, is Yang/Blake, known as Bumbleby. For me, I like the growth that the two have had together since v1, especially things you've yet to see. I really can't get too far into why I like them because of spoilers, but a secondary reason is because I'm a lesbian lol. I've shipped them since Burning the Candle, and things have only solidified more and more for me with them. I'm a bit of a sucker for the bright sunny character bringing the broody quiet character out of their shell, too.

I'm not really into shipping, I find it's the source of much of the negative interactions between fans of shows and often leads to really toxic environments. That being said, I think it is natural to want to see certain characters pair up and it can be a fun aspect of fandom if you're not a jerk about it. For me, a good ship should heal wounds and lift a character out of bad or destructive habits, but the relationship should feel realistic and not some love at first sight thing. I don't really ship any of the main cast in RWBY, probably because I'm a bit older than many fans and shipping teenagers feels weird to me. There is one RWBY ship that I love, but that's not until Volume 7, you guys know the one. I agree with the commenter above, I'm a sucker for the sunny/brooding, jock/goth pairings, it's just *chef's kiss*

I think a good relationship is built on characters who balance each other. That's why the "sunshine" and "edgy" characters are so popular. I personally love Yang and Blake, and Penny and Ruby (I mean I'm wlw myself that's no surprise) but specifically because I think they balance each other. Ruby brings Penny confidence and she's someone who Penny can explore with and honestly I think Penny brings this technical thinking to Ruby's freeform. Yang balances Blake as you saw in some previous episodes, encouraging her to slow down and look after herself. I probably won't say more about those two because I'd like to see what you think as you work through the series but personally I think balance is the most important (I think you can already see that Jaune and Pyrrha, perfect for each other)

For me I always felt this was the episode where it started to take a ‘darker’ turn. It seemed like a staple point when Oobleck started asking them about their motives and it’s the first time we see every character open up. It’s definitely something I still think about 6 volumes later, especially the fact he never asked Ruby, which could be chalked up to her age but I always thought it was alluding to the idea of an innocent soul, that she has no alternative motive to being a huntress.

Cage Nightwind

I work where I work because it was a job that hired me. I've stayed there for years because a handful of my co-workers ground me. They're pleasant people that make dealing with a retail job a bit more tolerable. One of my supervisors actually helped my self-esteem a bit once, though she doesn't know that. I'm studying Japanese on my down time because it's something I've wanted to do for a while and I feel like learning a new skill may help me feel like I'm not stuck in the same spot my whole life. I watch your reactions to RWBY because.. You're awesome. It goes deeper than that, but I've rambled on enough, and I think you've heard it before anyway. Peace!

Ugh and the doctor thing reminds me of the stupid critisisms of Jill biden. The fact that people complained that it seem fraudulent for her to call herself a doctor is a transparent indicator that they see women as incapable of genuinely deserving doctorates and thus they must be pretending to have more expertise than they are capable of.
