Dust has a multitude of properties. Dust as seen in the show so far has been mostly for offensive capabilities. Examples are in season one when Weiss would use a black glyph that was her using gravity dust in order to control movement of rwby to then kill the nevermore. Another usage of dust is often by Ruby where her bullets can be used in different ways which you will see in the future. Other ways dust is used so far is Gravity dust allows all these flying ships and vehicles to, well fly. But because you are are into the show you wont learn its true uses and even more uses till later Volumes. Around volume 5 they begin using it quite a bit more for non-combat reasons.

re: dust Look at the World of Remnant series! It covers worldbuilding for different topics. You can find the ones per volume on the wiki. They're short, usually no more than about 3-5 minutes. https://rwby.fandom.com/wiki/RWBY:_World_of_Remnant But to answer your question specifically: it's crytallised into different elements. Lighting, fire, ice, wind, and gravity are some of the more common types. You can also combine them for different effects. There also much rarer strains that stand on their own. Combining them with Semblances also gives them unique effects too. Each of Weiss' Glyphs is the cause of one type of dust effect. What happened with Blake during the mecha fight was the effects of lighting dust. It's specifically called Time Dilation and speeds up anything within the circumference of that specific Glyph. That's also why Ruby blew up in the beginning with Weiss; she activated fire dust when she sneezed.

I'd recommend watching World of Remnant as well, but make sure you don't watch ahead of the volume you are at the show, later WoR will contain spoilers. I'd recommend using the youtube links on the wiki page Kiki posted above. It'll be easier to avoid spoilers from the thumbnails that way, as the RT site shows the thumbnail while loading the video.

To sum up dust, its used in RWBY almost the same way we use electricity. Dust, like electricity, can be manipulated to power homes, vehicles and many everyday items. What makes it better than are electricity is its diversity in all the elements. We may be able to weaponize electricity with creations ,such as the rail gun, but dust allows people to break and bend the very fabric of nature itself. It’s a short cut to doing the impossible.

The World of Remnant videos you should watch are "Dust" "Kingdoms" "Grimm" and "Aura" Any other episodes are going to contain spoilers, and there are more to watch next volume. (which, btw, the Volume 3 episodes are "Vytal Festival Tournament" "Huntsmen" and "Cross Continental Transmit System" and one more that you shouldn't watch until after Volume 3 chapter 6 at the earliest. It aired after chapter 9, though)

Dust is essentially magic in a solid form. It comes in a variety of different "elements," everything from your standard fire, ice and electricity to more obscure ones like explosion and gravity.

Although, Storms The Reaper did a good job of explaining how it's used

Eyla

I honestly have no idea if I would be the type of person to follow, though I do agree with Ruby to follow. If she had turned around, she wouldn't have found where the entrance to the caves were, and they would still be searching with the only difference being that it was guaranteed to be there (which is also important, and that could definitely be enough) but while I think she made the right move, I'm not sure if the terror of being spotted would stop me from making the same one haha. Also my name is odd so no-one gets it right first try no worries!! It rhymes with Layla haha

Oobleck is one of the characters not based off a fairy tale, but a children's story. He's based off the Dr. Seuss book Bartholomew and the Oobleck, hense his name being Dr. Bartholomew Oobleck. His hair is green, which is what colour the oobleck in the story was

Cage Nightwind

A little deeper. She was faced with a choice. If she got help she'd lose the trail and she had faith in her speed semblance to help her escape if she got spotted.. The issue was the cave in caused by deus ex machina. However, were it me... I'd definitely try to signal someone silently. On that note.. One HELL of a lookout Yang is, amirite?

correction; weiss making blake glow wasn't exactly dust. She was using the time dilution gliph on blake, which makes objects inside of the glyph experience time at a slower rate and thus makes them move super fast. A side effect is that using a glyph on blake made blake glow.
