I made a video all about erasing other people’s tapes - and why this might be a good idea. I feel that it’s too long, but ironically(?) I didn’t want to delete any more out of it.

Here it is.

Hope you’re all keeping well. Take care and have a good week.

Oh and I'll probably change the title as I'm likely the only one who thinks it's witty.

UPDATE

I re-edited a few sections of the video to tidy up some confusions.

Erasing Tapes - how sweet the sound?

In this video I explain why buying old used tapes full of someone else’s recordings might be your last best option if you still want to make good quality cassette recordings at a sensible price. I then go on to try a variety of erasing methods on used tapes to test their effectiveness. Here’s a link to a review of the new ‘type 2’ cassettes by ANA(DIA)LOG https://youtu.be/WJDNA9iwUi4 FAQ Q) Hey your tape deck at the end isn’t set for Type II Chrome Tapes. A) Yes it is. The Sony TD-D5M cassette deck has a mechanical switch with two tape type positions. Position I) Type 1 & 2 Position II) Type 3 & 4 Type 2 is recognised as being different from type 1 automatically by the extra notch present in the cassette housing. This results in an orange circle appearing in the Type II indicator window next to the switch. If you look closely at the video you can read the relevant text next to the switch and you can also see the orange indicator while the chrome tape is being played. The chrome type II tape was both recorded and played back in Type II mode. Any adhesive tape was removed prior to the recording being made in order to to allow the deck to correctly identify the tape type from the notch on the cassette. ------------- Merchandise ----------------- New Techmoan Merchandise is now available. https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/nerdkeyz?ref=seller-platform-mcnav&section_id=37136753 --------------- SUBSCRIBE ------------------ http://www.youtube.com/user/Techmoan?sub_confirmation=1 ------------- SUPPORT --------------- This channel can be supported through Patreon https://www.patreon.com/techmoan *******Patrons usually have early access to videos******* ---------- Outro Music ----------- Over Time - Vibe Tracks https://youtu.be/VSSswVZSgJw ------ Outro Sound Effect ------ ThatSFXGuy - https://youtu.be/5M3-ZV5-QDM ------ AFFILIATED LINKS/ADVERTISING NOTICE ------- All links are Affiliated where possible. A) Patrons https://www.patreon.com/techmoan usually have early access to videos. Late to the party here. The cheapo boombox's permanent magnet erase head is actually worse than you might think. The record head has an AC bias signal ( in the 100's of kHz) superimposed on the audio being recorded (this improves the recording). This partially erases the tape, even if there's no audio being recorded. I wonder how bad it would sound with just the magnet and no record head signal..

I'm amazed how well the passive tape eraser works, I didn't expect it to be that effective. Today's neodymium magnets are much more powerful than the ceramic magnets they had back then, I'm definitely going to build me one of those!!
