A bit of an odd video today -  just something I felt the urge to share…with the dozen or so people who might find it useful.

https://youtu.be/cMSHtJ_86F4

However now I’ve got this out of my system - I intend to make up for it very soon as I hope to have the next (more normal) video uploaded here on Patreon at the weekend.

UPDATE: Removed the video from youtube. Seems the world wasn't ready. It was too confusing for many people and frankly I was just really tired of getting sanctimonious emails giving unsolicited, unqualified and irrelevant health advice based upon what happens in the US private healthcare system.

This video is now a Patreon Exclusive.

Detecting Mild Sleep Apnea with a pulse oximeter

Something weird was going on with my sleep - it turned out to be sleep apnea. There's a gadget category which lets you monitor yourself in the comfort of your home and also can help towards reducing the effects of the condition in some mild cases. I haven’t put an affiliated link to the exact Pule Oximeter I bought as while it does work, it doesn’t seem resilient and I’m sure there are (or will soon be) better options for the money. All these devices seem a bit janky at the moment, so choose carefully or perhaps wait a while until they improve or this idea gets incorporated into a smart-watch from a company like Fitbit or Apple (or insert other company you prefer here)...and yes some Fitbits can already measure blood oxygen - but at the moment they only provide very basic generalised results and more importantly they don’t give alerts for low sp02 - same with the Withings, same the the Garmin...so unfortunately these currently aren’t a viable alternative to the category of devices I’m using. UPDATE: Video now delisted. It was generating abusive and intrusive emails from people who for some reason thought they now had the right to inform me in patronising and condescending detail how I should be living my life - without them having the faintest clue as to the other long term incurable chronic medical conditions I'm having to manage. These extend far beyond mild, self-controlled sleep apnea. I never intended to create videos that made boundary-illiterate individuals feel emboldened to point scorn at a stranger, then offer up unsolicited, ill-informed and woefully unqualified advice - this was just a video about a piece of tech. There will be no more health tech demonstrations on this channel.

After watching your video I was looking for a comparable device to get an understanding if I might struggle with some sort of sleep apnea. (Not to diagnose but more to understand if I should follow up with my doctor) I purchased a slightly different unit, even though the app seems to be very similar. I thought I share at least the device name with you as the device is just on your finger without any cables. Its called wellue o2ring oxygen monitor. Dont know if it is available on Amazon UK. Maybe you can try that one as a alternative. It also has an alert function and build in display.

I think that’s the same company - is the app identical? Also how have you got on with it - is it comfortable?

Thanks for this video, Mat. My wife has recently been diagnosed with mild sleep apnea, and it's doing her head in. Before shelling out a couple of thousand dollarydoos on a CPAP machine, I'm keen for her to give this a try. BTW sorry to read that you had to unlist this video due to prats being prats, but thanks for keeping it for us patrons. A timely reminder that YouTube comments feeds can still be just as much of a toilet as they've always been. *sigh*
