An obscure type of record you might not have seen before.

https://youtu.be/shisgymvKZ8

Unfortunately though it wasn’t obscure enough to prevent the first version I uploaded getting immediately blocked due to a content match. That’s totally blocked - not just demonetised. That’s when a rights holder isn’t messing about.

This re-uploaded version features shorter audio clips which I hope will continue to fly under the radar...but only time will tell.

What’s ironic, is that this was a format from a time when no concern was being paid in Poland to copyright - I believe that some of these records used recordings taken off Radio Luxembourg. However fifty years later,  play 15 seconds from one of these crackly discs/squares and the WMG Poland ban-hammer is deployed with furious vengeance.

Times have changed.

Anyway - I’m not complaining, I‘m just sharing a bit of behind the scenes - and also explaining why the music clips are the length they are. Then again given the quality of the audio, you may thank me for the brevity.  Hope you enjoy the this video, it’s the last one for April.

This one has been published early, so it puts Patrons about a week ahead of the YouTube viewers. That’ll give you plenty of time to buy up all the Pocztówka Dźwiękowa on eBay before the inevitable rush ;-)

Have a nice weekend and take care of yourself.

UPDATE 1 - Taken a few seconds off - to remove the mentions of these Polish Sound Postcards being unique to Poland. Also fixed a couple of errors.

Polish Sound Postcards (Pocztówka Dźwiękowa)

I’m laying my cards on the table…the turntable. You might have encountered the occasional novelty recording on laminated card - perhaps given away as a promotional tool, inserted in a magazine or on the back of a cereal box. However did you know that in 1960s & 70s Poland, the Sound Postcard was used as a budget format for popular music. I'm posting weeks after this video came out, but thought you might be curious: I talked to my mother, who was a teenager in Poland in the 60s. She said that she had a bunch of these, but they were all Western music (mostly The Beatles). And yes, some of it recorded from Radio Luxembourg. She doesn't recall ever seeing any Polish music on these, the whole point of them being to get access to that western music. She remembers getting one with a personalised message from a friend for her namesday, otherwise they were all pre-recorded. They didn't go with her to Australia, unfortunately I've never seen them.

... and my dad remembers them as being around but doesn't remember owning any at all! So they were around for sure but weren't universally popular.

YouTube's auto-subtitle translated the Polish into "KGB uncover", which is rather unfortunate.
