This is an interesting bit of lore. A dragon's size and power being directly proportional to their hoard meshes nicely with their consumption of gems, and gives biological reason for their greedy natures. It also raises an interesting aspect of Spike's infatuation with Rarity; she has her own greedy tendency, but is also generous; the direct inverse. Perhaps that plays some part in the connection he feels with her.

I always loved the moment where Spike and Rarity are falling, and he tries to confess his feelings but Rarity stops him. It's very sweet. This episode is very special to me because it introduces the pony in my profile pic: Junebug. I like that she was introduced while drinking out of the town fountain. How very pony-like. She also has no time for Spike's nonsense :D There is yet another Derpy sighting in this episode. She pops out of some bushes between Lyra Heartstrings and Bon Bon in the background.

The musical bit where Twilight is sorting books is inspired by "Sorcerer's Apprentice" from Fantasia. The most emotional part for me was where Spike looks at his giant footprint compared to his li'l claw. He must've been so unsure about growing up and what he'll become. Good thing Rarity is just the pony to make him feel better.

Oh the massive fandom debates this episode caused for years over how dragons grow up, if Greed Growth was just one way or the only way, did this mean an adult Spike would never get wings? So many questions....... well, you'll find out if any of them get answered. Oh and it was a kind of inside joke on the 'That sounds like Fluttershy/Pinkie Pie', since they have the same VA.
