Glad you and your family + ranch and animas are all ok Cody.

Interesting, I've never seen a slow grass fire like that before. Any interesting chemistry behind the pink liquid retardant? Maybe you could grab a pink grass sample and do some experiments. Anyway, thanks for sharing as always.

Stay safe Cody

We are in the same position here in Northern AZ. It's class-3 fire restrictions now all around. The monsoons have started - good news, rain after months of drought. Bad news, lightning, as you are reporting. My daughter and her guy do hot shot work. She keeps warning me to keep 50' defensible space...

That stuff is called Phos-Chek, and it's usually dropped in front of fires to slow them down. It's mostly made of ammonium phosphate or ammonium polyphosphate.

Do you do anything in particular in order to keep potential fires away from your property? Is it feasible to make the area around it inflammable

Anonymous

Good god.... That's terrifying.

Your father asked if the big plane is a jet-airliner. I think it is that one:https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Aerospace_146?wprov=sfla1

Cody, I commend you for your efforts to slow that fire. It's hard work, particularly at higher altitudes. My father lost his home in the Tinder Fire near Happy Jack, AZ on April 29th. His cabin was at almost 7,000 ft elevation in the Coconino National Forest. The fire destroyed about 47 homes and out buildings. And the fire was started by a campfire left burning in a NO FIRES area. I would appreciate it if you would explain to your subscribers that there is a National prohibition to flying any private drones in the proximity of fire fighting activities. If they air crews discover that a drone is flying, they will STOP ALL AIR DROPS until it is safe for the aircraft to return to the area. During the air support of the Tinder Fire, someone was flying a drone and all ground fire suppression aircraft left the area until the drone was brought down. My Dad's cabin took only 10 minutes to be completely consumed. 10 minutes. Fortunately, thanks to the Clear Creek Pines Fire Department, The Hotshot crews, the Coconino County Sheriff's Dept, and other volunteers, the fire didn't spread to other homes, and everyone was evacuated safely. My Dad and I got out of there about 30 hours before the house was reduced to ashes.

Great video. What is the pink stuff, and how does a dusting of it stop the fire?

So terribly sorry to hear about your father's cabin. I am very much grateful you both survived. Fires are a hungry uncontrollable creature. People just don't understand that it seems. My brother-in-law was a firefighter/EMT for years. Until his knees said no more. The stories I've heard... hair raising to be certain. So yes, I agree with you. People ~need~ to understand what rules there are regarding the National Forests & abide by them. Blessings to you & your family. 🕊

Cody, I'm so grateful you, your family & all of your animals are doing well. Fires are a hungry uncontrollable creature. My brother-in-law was a firefighter/EMT for years. It was quite interesting to get to watch you in action as well as the firefighters. Blessings to you and your family. 🕊

Maybe you could do a video on fire safety and prevention. You could also touch on how to interact with the fire department. It would be pretty easy, and give you quick content when you are working on a big project.

I understand that Patreon is just trying to be upbeat and excited, but, if a patreon creator posts some bad news like what I first feared this was, you can end up with an email that says "My dog died today. check it out!" In fact, I think I had exactly that when William Osman's house burned down...

Maybe a collab with wranglestar to teach you and your family better techniques when dealing with wild fires. I think it could be a great way to educate your vast community and save lives. I cringe at the thought of someone running into the pine forests (where I live) to try to save a structure after watching this video, completely ill prepared for the wild nature of the beast. Glad you are all safe. I'm not a nanny state kinda guy but if this video goes to YouTube I hope it comes with a disclaimer that in most instances this is reckless behavior. (Of course in your circumstances I would've done exactly what you did and possibly backfired a line if I could muster manpower and leaf blowers)

Here it appears to be mainly really low level brushes and grass, and in many places, you can just step over the fire, pretty much. But i wonder how much appearances can be deceiving..

Well as a firefighter as in the northeast attempting to fight a wildfire with no training could get you killed. I've had fires on the infamous horseshoe curve jump fire lines and roar up a mountain at 35 mph engulfing everything under the canopy. As you must've skimmed through my comment my point was in his situation it was understandable but we should as educators lead by example and at least a disclaimer should be made.

Thank you for the disclaimer Cody! I got a good laugh too. I did become weary and lay down for a rest one time as a youngin. But it was well behind the back burn.
