you should really listen to their EP that came out in 2018. It has some of the elements that are amaizing and it's a really good EP. It's a precursor to everything great on this album. I think you'd really love it.

yep!! here’s a link with a video of her recording that part if you’re interested👀: https://twitter.com/thephoeberoom/status/1641934970397548550?s=46&t=GabeqDiMJYiOglC0fz6Bww

the last track, letter to an old poet is sort of a sequel song to me and my dog off of their ep! theres parallels in the lyrics "I want to be emaciated" in me and my dog to "I want to be happy" in the new one. (likely also why there is mention of the dog) - this is such a great album and your video made me appreciate it so much more :) OH! and I'm not sure if you already saw it but they also released a short film/music video for three of their songs (20$, Emily im sorry, true blue) as part of the album drop it really added to the meaning behind the songs imo

the first boygenius ep had such an impact on me years ago and remains one of my favorite projects, so needless to say I was so excited for this album and it did not disappoint, I’m glad you enjoyed it too!! Obviously I would recommend a listen to their first project, but also if you’re interested in exploring more of Lucy and Julien, they have some incredible solo projects. Home Video (Lucy Dacus) is I think my favorite (although a bit biased since I went to her concert and hearing all the songs in person made it even better), so many of the songs paint such a clear and emotional picture.

would also recommend the “boygenius live from Brooklyn steel” filmed performance of the EP on youtube! The crowd cheering at the end of “letter to an old poet” is an audio clip from that performance, specifically after they performed a song on their previous EP called “me and my dog”, the same song that mirrors the ending of “letter to an old poet” both lyrically and melodically (starting with “I want to be emaciated” versus “I want to be happy”)

there’s also songs in all of their discography that reference each other, and they all sing on each other’s projects. Most popularly, “Graceland Too” on Punisher and “Please Stay” on Home Video (Lucy’s recent project) are both about Julien (specifically her struggles with mental health). “Favor” on Little Oblivions is Julien’s response to these two songs, and they are all beautiful and emotional.

Stunning album 🤩 I love how you can make me listen to a lot of new artists.

Mariana

what a delight of an album omg!!!

Easily my favorite of the year so far and like you said can definitely see it being in my top by years end as well. I actually hadn’t heard of them before Phoebe’s album. Such a phenomenally talented group of magnetic individual artists.

Boys Don't Cry is a song by the Cure, which I think is the reference they were going for.

Damn, this was awesome. I was following you on YouTube and always loved your Taylor stuff, your Phoebe stuff, Olivia, Sabrina etc. But I joined Patreon for this reaction, I'm so happy you're on the boygenius bandwagon. I left you a long-ass comment on YouTube about the lore around We're in Love and LTAOP, but I forgot to mention Not Strong Enough - it's a reference to a Sheryl Crow song called "Strong Enough" (lyrics: "'Cause you can't change the way I am/ Are you strong enough to be my man?") and they said in interviews it's basically addressing the misogyny in the business toward female rockers. Like women are never badass enough, they're always "angels, never gods". It's an amazing song and a bit of a new sound for them, I'm so glad they're finding their voice as a unit. You would also have fun watching the video - it's shot by them with a phone. (And then there's the film directed by Kristen Stewart, encompassing 3 videos on this record and showcasing each lady)

Cool About It - bold of you to assume this is about a "he" 😂 I know you usually try to use they pronouns when you don't know who the artist is singing about and just slipped up this time; I just thought it was funny because to me it feels unlikely this song is about a he (I could be wrong of course)

Phoebe, Lucy, and Julien just did a genius video for Not Strong Enough! Would be awesome if you could check it out if u have the time!

FYI the song from Leonard Cohen was The Trapeze Swinger by iron and wine and its a 9 and a half minute song
