In the wake of a previous “jammed elevator” incident on another Douglas model, the DC-8, United Airlines instituted a new takeoff procedure. As the airspeed reached 80 knots during takeoff, the pilot flying would push the yoke FORWARD and observe a corresponding “nose down” response from the airplane. This was, in essence, a “confidence check” that the elevator would likely also work in the “nose up” direction when the decision to rotate was made.

What's going on with the nosewheel in the animation? It looks like there's something attached to it, and there's smoke coming from it. It's as if they're rolling with chocks on the wheel.
