Yall made a good point in your review, and it applies to a lot of what makes the show so likable-- the writing of the characters are wonderful!! Every character is so filled in and likable, theyre the heart of the show. Even when the main sci fi plot isnt as interesting, or the villains arent as memorable, you always always care about the characters and what theyre going thru. A side character like harriet jones can go thru a full arc in stepping up as a leader in just these two episodes! And when the main plot IS engaging, even better. Tbh i think the choice the doctor gave rose at the end of the ep really wasnt fair of him to do, it felt selfish of him but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Also i noticed on this viewing that, in the office with the big red telephone the three main aliens all stand in, you can see in the background theres an electric guitar on a stand behind the desk? As well as what looks like loose skittles scattered on the desk by the phone?? Why on earth these two items would be in some office in downing street idk. Maybe the set decorator decided the room need more color lol Glad you enjoyed the first two parter! And thank you for giving me a reason to look forward to the weekends while im in quarantine ✌✌

Finally managed to get my internet up long enough to watch your highlights reaction (it's really terrible here at the moment - I think it's due to the extra strain on the system with everyone home all the time - my internet hangs every few minutes) You made a lot of good points in your discussion at the end (well, as far as I could get before my internet died). I think there is a lot of good stuff in the episode, it's just overall a little more childish than some, and the sfx distracting (they use CGI monsters at one point, which I think are rather good, but running considerably faster than their counterparts in costume, and clash in contrast) And I am bothered by how long it takes them to divest themselves of their skin suits. But yes, even in the somewhat iffier episodes, there is a lot of character stuff, and they continually develop the Doctor/Rose dynamic, as well as side characters like Jackie, who I adore. She's just so real! I'm really glad you're enjoying it. So much more to come!

That's a great point! I can definitely sorta see that dynamic looking ahead. I'm glad they've such a solid grip on their core characters, because yeah - even if this isn't a highly-regarded ep (..or two), thought there were some really worthwhile character bits. LOVED that Harriet Jones got a chance to really shine and become a main player in this second half. Thought that whole arc was wonderful. Caaaan't disagree with you there 😅 but I s'pose there's no time when the world's ending and you're the most powerful singular being in the universe... lol As for the office, I definitely noticed the skittles - NOT sure I noticed the guitar lol. Maybe the current prime minister when all this went down was just a super-cool, laid back dude who loved Skittles & Rock 'n Roll? 😅 Quite glad to still be thoroughly enjoying so far & even happier if we can further brighten up your weekends while all this chaos is going on 😊 thanks so much for stickin' with us and always being so thoughtful with your feedback!!

Aw haha, well glad you were at least able to catch some of it!! We've been dealing with that here as well. Combination of so many people being home + I imagine a lot of extra traffic from hospitals n things like that. I feel ya re: the Aliens. They come off waaaay clunkier in suit-form than they do in CG. I appreciate both, but can't deny they.. don't really marry. And the suit gripe is fair - they get in and out so slow & inefficiently, you think maybe it would've been more a hindrance at some point.. I'm glad that's a consensus, though. I can handle a less-than-interesting monster or plot-of-the-week if the central characters (or even side characters like Harriet Jones here) have something rich or interesting going on. And very much agree re: Jackie! Starting over after so long, I've found myself appreciating Jackie & Rose's dynamic a bit more, especially the aspects that aren't overt, but you can sorta piece together looking at their rapport & how they're living.. Either way, VERY excited for more adventure to come!! Already counting the days lol

When ever the show goes a bit cheesy, people need to remember that this is also a show for kids, in fact it started off that way in 1963 as away to educate children on History. Things quickly changed early on when they started introducing other worlds and aliens and the show really took off from there. Thats not to say this show won't get scary or tackle more adult issues, as you progress and the production value gets larger (as the show was becoming more popular worldwide) the show finds a better balance or covering for all ages.

Yeah haha, that's what I've been doing best to remind myself. Didn't actually know it was originally intended to teach history, though! That's pretty cool.. even though I guess it's not so much about that now haha. Curious to see the growth over time, though. I don't think I've caught very many glimpses of the show at its recent peak. Do appreciate a series that can jump between sensibilities between episodes, though. Cool to get a story for the younger side, then the older, then each in-between. Can definitely see why this show brings folks together.

I'm glad you guys like the Harriet Jones character. Dr who is full of side characters like this and it's one of those things that make you invest in each new adventure. The character development of Rose's mum and Mickey is also one of my faves.

thereelrejects

That's something I'm really glad to hear in general, because I loved what Harriet Jones brought to this one. Thinking back, they've had a pretty great guest cast so far. Charles Dickens comes to mind in this vein also. And very glad to know we'll get more with Mickey and Mum, because I've been pleasantly surprised with their growth so far - and the way they anchor Rose to a specific time n place..
