Anime!

I'm lost I have never seen any anime or western series y'all have posted on here.

There's an anime for everyone. I seen anime about Volleyball, bread baking, postal service, erotic cooking, making dictionaries, glass blowing, making anime, bartending, time travel with beepers, 1920's bootleggers, economic with a traveling merchant and wolf god.

While I do love Anime there are a few western animated series I like. Pretty much all the DC animated shows: young justice, teen titans, justice league TAS, batman TAS ect. Avatar the last airbender/Korra. Recently Castlevania from Netflix. A few of those are influenced by anime.

I don’t watch any Anime. Just not my thing.

Anime. Naruto, One Piece, Case Closed (org. Detective Conan, to an extent); DB, DBZ (DB GT because I grew up with it), DBS & DBZA - Did you see the Dragonball Abridged Series?.. because its awesome on any level.

I’m a huge Avatar/Korra fan and I’ll give any animated series a try but anime would be my go-to because it’s so intense. They could probably get you hype watching grass grow in anime.

That being said my young kids don’t get into anime. I grew up on 90s animation and they seem so off beat compared to nowadays. The shows my kids watch are today are very wholesome, straight laced and politically correct. The western animated shows that stand out aren’t catered to kids.

Anime is a lot more creative, mature and with complex plot points mostly because they feel they have an adult audience and don’t have to cater to kids alone, don’t get me wrong I love batman TAS, avatar and young justice as much as the next guy but anime is just too versatile to pass up on, it’s my favorite medium of entertainment

i personally like both each has had great series for example western anime like xiaolin showdown however i think anime has more episodes that have an over arching story and plot whereas most western animated series have villain of the week and isolated epiosdes

Ahh yeah, I was gonna say haha Avatar & Castlevania at the very least seemed like they had a lot of anime in their roots. It's been a while since I've actually seen any of the DC hero shows, but I feel like those definitely represent some of the gold standard, at least in terms of popular series. They seem to hold up pretty well and they've only gotten a longevity boost from the recent hero boom. I've never actually seen Airbender. Would be curious one'a these days!

I feel like we've only done a very small handful of western animated series here/on our YouTube, but there's a lot worth checking out on both sides. Just depends on what your taste for that sorta stuff is. The sensibilities are definitely different when it comes to anime, but there are some really great stories and some beautiful artwork in some of these shows. I feel like the western stuff is somewhat trapped in the view that animation is "for kids," but it seems like we've been branching out a bit & widening the medium lately. Pretty fun & fascinating stuff!

I think that's probably the thing I appreciate most about anime as an overall medium is the way it really does seem like there's something for every interest and every age level. One of these days I'd be fascinated to take a trip down a few of these side streets haha.

Y'know.. I can't remember if Greg caught any Dragonball back in the day, but I know that's a pretty significant blindspot for me 😅 not sure why I didn't hop on with Dragonball Z, but Gundam Wing was the thing that was captivating me at the time lol. One'a these days I'll have to give it another try. As well as some of these other shows!

Hahaha I just envisioned what intense anime grass growth might look like. So many intensity lines as those blades break up thru the dirt 😅😅😅 Gonna have to check out Avatar/Korra at some point- I've heard lots of good over the years about both.

90s animation like the stuff they used to run on Nick & on Saturday mornings 'n stuff? I definitely remember those being on the more out-there & sneakily irreverent side. I haven't caught a tooon of what's out there for kids these days, but I definitely get that sense it's a lot more sanitary. And that's a good point. Seems like Batman: The Animated Series comes up pretty frequently, but by-and-large a lot of the animated shows regarded as great or groundbreaking here do have a more blatant adult edge. I almost wonder if this is us slowly breaking out of the "animation is for kids" mindset, but going totally in the opposite direction. Who knows, perhaps in several years we'll start to see a more even spectrum on the western end..

This is the overwhelming consensus I'm seeing haha. And I think that is a great point - anime does seem to offer a MUCH wider range of subject matters for a lot more demographics. One'a these days I'd love to sit down and peruse some of the other stuff that's out there (since most of the anime I've seen is shonen type stuff). It's been so fun coming back to it, though. Can definitely see why you love it so!

Ahhh, that's a good point! I feel like some of our more adult-pitched series are getting a bit more serialized, but by-and-large it does feel like western animation loves episodics. I think the big consensus is that anime offers a MUCH wider variety of content styles, but all in all there's definitely stuff I love on both sides. Very curious to see how our stuff will change over time as the medium grows.

Scuba Steve

Just family guy South Park archer animation like that. I never got into Pokémon dragon ball or death note.

Jorge Luque

Love animation in general. If I had to pick I'd say anime, but there are some great western cartoons. Avatar comes to mind immediately. Both The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra are phenomenal shows.

2021-07-15 05:18:31 That seems to be the going consensus haha - which does seem to make a lot of sense haha, as anime has proven itself a lot more versatile in its current form. I've heard so much about Avatar & Korra over the years - one'a these days I'm gonna hafta give one or both a go!
