It was a pretty emotional experience listening to this episode for me. My grandfather died of Alzheimers. It happened very quick. I still believe he'd had it for years, but my grandmother covered it up. When she died, he went downhill very fast. He was always a quiet guy, which masked the symptoms as well. It's hereditary. It frightens me and I'm sure it frightens my dad too. Even the thought of my dad going down the same road is painful to me. I'll definitely check out the Fading Memories Podcast. Good episode.

It's such a horrible disease. We went through it with my grandmother. It seems so obvious, but one thing that really decreased her stress was when we played along with whatever scenario was going on in her mind when possible. If she asked about a relative who had been dead for decades, instead of saying "remember, he passed away in 1975." we just said "last we heard from him, he was doing well." A big problem for her was forgetting my grandpa visited almost every day. So, she'd cry and say "you never come see me". Instead of insisting he did, he just stated saying "I'm sorry Honey. I will do better." It was so much less stressful for her that way.
