Chomsky seems to fall in the Matt Groening category of intellectuals and celebrities that Epstein collected. Obviously reflects horribly on him that he was socially associating with Epatein but weird that he gets more attention than Burns. Seems mostly motivated by schadenfreude given how many people really hate Chomsky because of his political commentary. it's also a stretch to say that "vote blue in swing states" is a commitment to the Dem project.

Sorry to inform that Chomsky is actually relevant to LLMs, so what you describe is not total BS. I knew him from the Computer Science direction before I knew about "Manufacturing Consent" and all that. Anyone who had literally 2 minutes worth of knowledge on Chomsky would not be trying to find some schizo rabbit hole to explain how or why he would have interactions with God King Dirtbags. He allots exactly 0 seconds into his schedule for doing background checks on the people he meets with, does interviews for, etc. The first thing out of his mouth in most interviews is "idk who the hell you are but you said you'd let me talk about/do whatever I want so I'm here". At this point I'm tired of people making massive assumptions every time it's proven that Epstein had some peripheral interaction with any celebrity. Like everyone has forgotten that his entire fucking job was entrapping as many prominent figures as possible into interacting with him so that he could develop blackmail on them. If he couldn't manufacture hard dirt on somebody doing a sex crime, he would manufacture associations between the target figure and himself or someone else that he does have hard dirt on, it still works just as well as blackmail on a rainy day. Like I don't see how anyone can explain Epstein's operation without admitting that most likely the majority of people who are implicated in his files are going to be totally innocent and basically unaware of what he was doing. I love to dig into a good Epstein rabbit hole as much as the next guy but I've made my peace with the fact that most random Epstein factoids are going to amount to absolute dead ends and that probably no one will ever have enough evidence to say without a doubt that most of the celebrities implicated in his files are guilty of anything at all.

I mean, fair enough. I should specify that I do think this is a real bad look for Noam either way and is pretty fucked up. Genuinely just using him as an example here, because my point still stands, this should not be surprising to anyone that knows his background. He spent the majority of his career taking dark money directly from the pentagon and getting away with it by having hush hush relations with the most powerful politicians and capitalists on earth. While he was a groundbreaking activist against the Vietnam war, and redefined the antinuclear movement, he was working on a program to improve missile system capabilities, specifically nuclear systems (MITRE). It’s not hard to see how one could interpret this as a conflict of interests, lol. All that being said, he has clearly stated over the years that he holds those pentagon hawks as the worst form of criminals the world has ever seen, I think in his own mind he sees Jeffrey Epstein as about 1% as evil as the American imperial elite, and if he so clearly rationalizes spending his life’s work doing direct dealings with them, it takes no stretch of the imagination to rationalize some peripheral interaction with Epstein. I can see why people would have problems with that, I know I wouldn’t make those same excuses, or do anything extracurricular with these types of figures, but it’s not surprising in there slightest, and no one would have any question about his motives if they had any familiarity with his political history.

I think it’s just that he honestly does not care about the optics … or that he doesn’t believe there’s an issue with associating with a bad person if it is what allows him to have conversations that he has a political or intellectual interest in with third parties like the former pm of Israel.
