Try not to shit on Modernism and modern artists too much, John. The movement, as unfathomably broad as it is, has always been fairly amorphous when it comes to political leanings and social movements primarily where it hasn’t been polluted by gentrification—which I will admit is increasingly more difficult to come by these days. Plenty of bad apples within Modernism but also many comrades within its ranks, especially within surrealism, constructivism, and social realism where they still stand. Many muralists in particular are still holding strong against the capitalist tide and still employ much of what we would call Modernist technique. This comes in contrast to Postmodern artists who, for lack of better terms, have their heads shoved so far up their asses they’ve lost any and all direction. Not to say their art is “bad,” but direction and even progress in any form is an especially modernist concept which Postmodernists by definition adamantly question and oppose. Regardless of what sophist dipshits like Jordan Peterson would tell you, Postmodernism is oil to Marxism’s water. Because it demands a path forward to a better future, left wing politics, including much of what has been shared on this pod, can easily fit within the Modernist ideal, which as I mentioned is almost too broad to begin to describe. Cut us some slack there, dude. We’re not all evil.

This is all very interesting to me and I am wondering if anyone has more to say specifically about this particular Steve Reich work in relation to the pod content. Incredibly moving and horrifying yes! An ugly visceral feeling for me, very hard to put into words, but this is because I know for Reich this song was focusing on the railway system during the Holocaust in contrast with his experiences on the American railway system at the same time.
