Brace, it hasn't been 11 years, but I'm listening to this 5 years later and "let's hope this conflict ends soon" slaps dude- congrats.

Rusty Shackleford

Brace, are you familiar with Radio War Nerd? You'd be a great guest for them. They do really excellent Syria and Rojava content, and it's an outstanding podcast in general.

You take that back! Pennsylvania is nothing like Virginia. VA doesn’t have a single big city as cool as philly or Pittsburg. Have you ever been to Alexandria? It’s terrible. Norfolk would be ok if it weren’t for the military base, but still no philly.

MechanicalJunkie

The greyhound terminal bathrooms in Alexandria are very nice though I will admit. Like 30 stalls in there it’s great to get high in.

Hooray! I was hoping for this episode! My dad is Lur & though he watches the news religiously, he won't really talk to me about it so I only have a broad comfortable US middle class idea of the history, society, etc of Kurdistan. Thank you!

I hope you guys can do another episode about Rojava... do listeners know about its emancipatory, revolutionary nature? They (were) ACTUALLY organizing a new kind of anti-capitalist decentralized society with no central police, based on direct democracy... Just to get you started, dear listeners, even from wikipedia, you can learn that the Rojava revolution "had a prominent role played by women both on the battlefield and within the newly formed political system, as well as the implementation of democratic confederalism, a form of libertarian socialism that emphasizes decentralization, gender equality and the need for local governance through semi-direct democracy." (You guys should have David Graeber on somehow)

Tristram Shandy

Rojava is not a project without its critics and its treatment of some minorities particularly Assyrians. As a long-term project the geo-politics of the region were always going to result in a negotiation with the Syrian government for local autonomy as Turkey will never permit an independent Kurdish state on its borders.

listening now, after the tragic and criminal murder of Qassem Soleimani, I propose that we award him the postmortem rank "Sex Admiral"
