What a year its been. DreamWorks released some of its best work in years, WDAS unimpressed audiences, a long awaited Del Toro film blew us away, and a Pixar film became synonymous with 9/11. 2022 oh boy!!!

Man, this was definitely a great year for animated films, personally I definitely agree with a lot of your list, it’s honestly great to see Dreamworks bring out some of their animated films in recent years, we got some solid works from Pixar this year with LightYear being pretty good, and Turning Red being fantastic and has actually become one of my new favorite Pixar films, although I can do without the 9/11 jokes, and we got the best Pinocchio adaptation of 2022 and the best Pinocchio adaptation since the Walt Disney animated classic. Overall I would say that 2022 was a great year for animated films, and I am so excited for 2023, some of my most anticipated animated films are the Super Mario Bros Movie, Across the Spider-Verse, Nimona, Elemental and Wish, so all I gotta say is that I cannot wait to see what 2023 has to offer with animated films.

Kenneth Stoddard

I still believe that this is another weak year for animated films in terms of quality and box office performances and may I add even weaker than in 2021. Don’t care what you people think and including you Mat, I still think it a weak year in terms of how so many animated films didn’t live it up to my expectations because if most of the Disney films came out disappointing this year then so does most of the animated films of 2022. Anyways, for the worst animated film of this year, I put the new Ice Age movie over HT4. I will give credit that HT4 will be the last film since it has gotten weaker to the point that evens fans will started to getting sick of the HT films so I’m glad it the last one. The new Ice Age film on the other hand does not as it seems like Disney is planning on making more of these films just for the purpose of adding more Disney+ content so I don’t expect to watch another Ice Age film when it comes out sometime in the future like I didn’t watch another new animated Diary Of a Wimpy Kid movie this year. For the best, I think agree with the top three on that list although if Marcel the Shell With Shoes On was on that list and have seen it I would put it number 2 behind GDT’s Pinocchio and ahead of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. I think those are the films that I really like the most including Marcel if it was on that list. Big highs for this year are DreamWorks Animation and Netflix in terms of good animated films this year, Paramount and Universal especially the former in delivering some hit movies of this year, and not good year this year are Disney and especially Warner Bros Discovery in terms of the reputation this year. I will give Disney a slight edge over WBD giving their hits with Marvel and Avatar 2 this despite underperforming with their family titles, but I think WBD is pretty much suffering the most giving with almost every decision they made they have done that end up making things worst. Other than that, that all I gotta say for this year in terms of animated films and movie industry in general this year. I hope 2023 will be more exciting and better for movies including the animated films like Super Mario Bros Movie, Nimona, Elemental, Wish, and especially Across the Spider-Verse as it is my most anticipated movie of 2023 so more people can go check out in theaters given there are people still hesitant to watch it on the big screen so I hope this could be the year.

Kenneth Stoddard

I don’t agree with you opinion of being “great” year for animated films but I get it though. I just feel a bit more cynical than ever in terms of how studios put out there animated films of this year.

Very well done list, AniMat. I’ll even admit this list definitely subverted some of my expectations with some of your choices for the Best and Worst spot. While some were obvious where they would end up like Turning Red, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio on the Best list and Paws of Fury, The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild, Hotel Transylvania: Transformania and Luck on the Worst list, some were surprises that I would’ve have expected like Apollo 10 1/2th and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules on the Worst and The Bob’s Burger Movie on the Best list or even both The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild and Hotel Transylvania: Transformania at the #1 Worst Animated Film; though considering how they’re both similar, I guess it makes sense. But still a well put together list and I still had a lot of fun with this year’s animated films like Turning Red, The Bad Guys, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (which I got to see on Christmas Day) and even Lightyear.

Hunter O'Laughlin

Blame Mr. Enter for making Turning Red synonymous with 9/11 with his controversial review in the first place!

Justin Monti

Oh trust me, I blame Mr.Enter plenty for bringing 9/11 into the discussions regarding Turning Red, when really there is no point in bringing 9/11 into these discussions regarding a Pixar film

Trenton Girone

Awesome list, AniMat! Regarding the opening segment, I already know where this is going. I’m going to go for something stronger though, like a hot buttered rum. Getting sick before Christmas also sucked. Edit: It turns out I am getting a Hurricane, after all.

Strider_Blaze

I agree with this list and some of the placements were unexpected for me. Looking forward to next year’s movies. Spider-Verse, TMNT and the Mario movie (sans Pratt) are gonna be ones I’ll look forward to.

I do kind of get where you are coming from with your expectations, when it comes to these movies but from where I do see the flaws with both the fact that they weren't massive box office hits (except for Minion's: The Rise of Gru) and the fact that most of the movies didn't reach the high expectations came from three things. The first was covid still being a factor and most of these movies being put on streaming so it was something that is still a thing. The second was the poor marketing with some of these movies, like Disney for example with how they released there movies like The Bob's Burgers Movie, Lightyear, and Strange World which failed to make returns. And finally I think most of these movies might have had some studio interference that affected the creative process, case in point Disney because I heard from my Dad after he read an article that when Chapeck was in charge he put business people in charge which affect the creative trust and brain trust to both Disney and Pixar. As well as the budgets for marketing when it comes to their movies in marketing. I do think what I am saying is a little opinionated but after reading articles and what not and the bad reputation Disney got over the years 2022 was probably its lowest point, and now that Chapeck is gone and Iger is back, I do think Disney and Pixar will get back on their feet, it's just the whole reputation and possible attacks from the right is where I am concerned that it might make Disney not get as much returns for their features.

Kenneth Stoddard

Yeah I do blame Chapek and the far right attacks towards Disney as to why this was not a good year in general for Disney this year in 2022 for that part.

Interesting list Mat, I would have to say that with this list in particular, it was just like a roller coaster of a year we had and I think that joke might carry on into 2023 (God I hope not). Anyways with my thoughts on this list I agree with your statement about it being a strong year but also agree with Kenneth that maybe certain films could have lived up to certain expectations. I would have to say that for my personal favorites from this year were Turning Red, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, and The Sea Beast. I do have some comment's on what's to come for 2023 and my thoughts are. Disney and Pixar will make a comeback now that Iger is back (for more of my reason take a look at my reply to Kenneth Stoddard) so Elemental and Wish will be fine and not be box office bombs (hopefully). Dreamworks will probably have one hit and one miss with Meet The Gillmas being either a hit or miss, while Trolls 3 will be just like the last two films. Illumination will finally prove themselves with The Super Mario Bros Movie, unless it is just a movie that delivers nothing but fanservice. And for Migration, I hope that this will make Illumination step out of their comfort zone and prove they can do more (since we have Benjamin Renner as the director and Mike White as the writer). Sony with Across the Spiderverse will be a hit now that HT4 is over there is no stopping them from going back to the top and proving they can compete. Paramount with the Paw Patrol sequel will be cute (for preschoolers). And TMNT: Ninja Mayhem will give more fill for TMNT fans than eating a whole pizza. And for Netflix, YAY NIMONA IS BACK AND READY TO DELIVER. As for the rest, I am kind of interested in High In The Clouds and The Monkey King, as well as the Chicken Run sequel, but will we get 2 more or not due to an article I read at the time regarding Ted Sarandos saying they want to release 6 animated features a year (that's why we got My Fathers Dragon this year than waiting for next year). I do think Netflix will maybe get a few hits, but with their reputation as well as issues regarding their business model I kind of have a love hate relationship with them, but at least they keep their shows and movies on their platform unlike WBD. As for the others I will wait and see how Spellbound does but if it is like Luck then Skydance animation needs luck to kick out Lassetter. And just to raise awareness, we are getting another Pinocchio movie from Russia (eck Russia) called Pinocchio and the Water of Life and it will star Tom Kenny as Pinocchio, so the Pinocchio and Tom Kenny train in Pinocchio is not over yet.

Joshua Copelan

And just to clarify with that whole Russia eck thing, its not Russia it's the government of Russia with Putin in charge.

Well to be truthfully honest, I wouldn't blame you for saying 2022 is honestly the worst year ever for us. And it really just beat out all the other things like the pandemic, the presidential election, etc With me any of those things I just pass over them like they were not a big deal. What really stuck out going out through this year was dealing with a lot of depression and grieving. Sure we lost a few beloved celebrities, but I lost my Dog, my Grandfather, and the end of the year was on top of losing... Our own House. Literally we started moving out because our landlord kicked us out and now we're living in our Uncle's place until we find another. I can guarantee though. It was a great film year though. It almost loved every film that came out to this year. The Bad Guys, Lightyear, Turning red, a wonderful film reel. I can even say even on television was an amazing year too. Disney TVA is like a Renaissance that's on par with their movies, Star Wars is similar, Netflix while not doing great now, had a good start, and Cartoon Network is a close second. We can only hope that 2023 will turn up better this year, especially for us. I'm just at least I'm part of it.

Alan Oliva

Very appreciated thank you, all in the term it's a fresh new start for us. In fact my uncle is actually helping us out, thinking about a house we could all share together
